Cottage, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)
We grew up in Ohio- Cleveland Cincy and Lima. We moved to WNC after graduating from Ohio State.. David worked at DuPont in Brevard until retiring in 2000 when the Brevard location closed. Now the property is the DuPont State Forest. Lonnie taught Middle School in Henderson County.. she s also a Carolina Dahlia Society member. When the dahlias and other garden flowers are blooming, you will often find a bouquet at your back door to enjoy. After visiting us many times, our parents also fell in love with Hendersonville. They chose this area for their retirement location. After living in the area for 50 years we are still in love with the mountains and our woods.Just a little slice of heaven on Earth. Come visit and we think you'll see why we fell in love with this property.
Owner purchased this House in 1985
Why Owner chose Hendersonville
Rugby Community We knew we wanted to be in the woods on acreage yet close to town. We searched for a year and finally located this beautiful piece of property in 1982. The woods are filled with native plants-azaleas mountain laurel, ferns, trilliums, rhododendrons and towering hardwoods. Originally our entire community of 9 homes was a single large estate. It sadly burned down in the 30's giving rise to a cottage debpvelopent. There are 3 original cottage homes dotting our private road. The Cardinal Cottage is one of them.. They were built for the Charlestonians to escape the summertime heat. After WWII this idea was abandoned . The remaining acreage was sold to individuals to build their custom homes. There are only 9 homes on our private road. We own 2 of them. Our road is lined with stones reminiscent of the original estate and bygone era. We fell in love with the property and we're sure you will also. Relax, unwind and step back in time.

Gracious hosts and sweet cabin
We stayed at the cabin between Christmas and New Years and it was a lovely respite from the usual holiday busyness. David and Lonnie were very responsive and helpful when our arrival time fluctuated, and were flexible with our check-out time when we asked. They live up the road and were available if anything was needed, and were more than gracious hosts, full of recommendations and overall made it a lovely stay. The cottage was just as pictured, except for the extra Christmas decorations that were up during our stay. We would certainly consider returning for a homey getaway!
Feels like I was at my grandparents home it was so cozy!!!

Thanksgiving with Family
We had a great stay at Cardinal Cottage. The house is lovely and the surrounding property is beautiful. It was a perfect place for a few family members to stay. The beds were very comfortable and their was plenty of hot water and WiFi.
Great little treasure hidden in the woods
This cottage was perfect for our purposes. We just needed a comfortable place to stay that had a full kitchen as both my husband and I have special diets to adhere to.
We arrthe ived to find the owner, Lonnie, waiting for us. She took us on a tour of the house and showed us the ins and outs of the place and warned us about the bear which never surfaced while we were there.....thank goodness.
It was clean/spotless. I just wish that the weather was nicer so that we could have spent more time on the porch swing. It was so peaceful out there. I loved sitting at the kitchen table watching the birds at her bird feeder. I have never seen that many birds show up for food at one time in all of my life.
I especially enjoyed the typography map on her wall as it allowed us to see the elevations that we visited throughout the week. At one point, I thought that we had visited heaven because we were so high up. Once we got back to the cottage and I looked at the map, I was amazed that what I thought was very high was one of the shortest mountains on the map...it gave real perspective to the height of these majesties!
We had a pleasant stay and the upkeep expected from us was minimal...turning on the dish washer and taking out the garbage before leaving. Simple and to the point. I would return here if we are ever back in the area. It is a lovely cottage for adults...and quite toasty in the winter...no drafts here.
Lovely cottage. Everything we needed was furnished for us. Quality bedding and towels. Beds slept well. Very kind hosts.
