Overview

About the property

5+ bedroom, 5+ bath family-friendly home on the lake, with all amenities

One of the grandest homes on Lake Champlain, this 5-7 bedroom (more when you add in the upstairs playroom with trundle beds, and the downstairs lounge with TV, wet bar, and pull-out sofa) faces precisely west, so that on the equinox the sun sets directly across the lake, over the Adirondacks. And in mid-summer, it sets far to the north, allowing for swimming (in the lake or the pool) late into the evening, or a bonfire of driftwood (provided) on the stone seawall. In the center of the lawn is a burr oak tree, estimated to be 400-500 years old, with a tree swing and providing gentle shade on summer days.

Upstairs there are four bedrooms--including a master with a private deck overlooking lake--as well as a playroom with double trundle bed. On the main floor there is a kitchen with table that seats 6, screened-in porch, dining room (with table for 12), living room with cathedral ceilings and panoramic views of the lake, as well as a second master bedroom. Downstairs is a lounge with wet bar, television, and sectional that folds out into a queen-size bed, for late-night moving watching or changing out of your bathing suits. On the lower deck is a hot tub, and on the upper deck a picnic table and gas grill.

Equipped with everything you might, including:

* in-ground swimming pool

* hot tub

* kayaks (one single, one tandem), with personal flotation devices of all sizes

* tree swing

* hammock

* basketball hoop

* two concrete docks (a rarity on Lake Champlain)

* a mooring buoy

* gas grill

The house is in Charlotte, on the Lake Champlain Scenic Byway, one of the most beautiful bicycle routes in America. One town to the north is Shelburne, with its museum world-famous for Americana art, as well as Shelburne Farms with festivals and hiking trails. Only ten miles away is Burlington, a wonderful college town with restaurants, shops, cultural events, and minor league baseball team (the fearsome "Vermont Lake Monsters"). In the fall, the foliage draws visitors from around the world. And in the winter, the skiing is world-class, with Stowe, Sugarbush, Smugglers Notch, Bolton Valley, and the Middlebury Snow Bowl within an hour's drive.

This is not an investment property; it was our family home for many years, and now (after moved away) we return for a few weeks each summer. What that means is that it is extremely well-equipped, with high grade pots and pans, fine cutlery, a wide range of staples ranging from spices to sauces to flour and sugar (which guests are welcome to use), and a home lovingly cared for and maintained.

Unlike some other rentals, renting our home is not an anonymous transaction. Upon arrival you'll be met by our property manager, Tom, who'll walk you through the house, point out nearby amenities, and answer any questions you might have. He is available to you 24/7 for any needs that arise, and will also personally check you out at the end of your stay.

About The Owner

We bought this home in 2010 thinking it would be our "forever home," but work has taken us out to Oregon. We couldn't bear to part with our house, though, so we've taken the opportunity to share its beauty with others, and also the chance to come home ourselves for a few weeks each summer.

What makes this house unique

We fell in love with our home when we saw the 500-year-old oak tree in the back yard, where we enjoy dinners on summer evenings as the sun sets over the Adirondacks, and the kids swing on the tree swing.

A Beautiful Week for All!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of three generations spent a week at this wonderful home. It was well-stocked, spacious, and inviting for all. The pool, along with the lake, provided everyone with numerous water activities including swimming in the lake or pool, fishing, and using the kayaks. Tom, the Property Manager, was available whenever needed and provided us with area information and ideas for visits to museums, restuarants,etc. We went to Ben and Jerry's, made a day trip to Montreal, and went to a Single A baseball game. There was something for everyone! A wonderful home in a beautiful area!

Perfect Gathering Spot for Families!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful setting, great layout, fully equipped kitchen, gorgeous lake views, and the most beautiful tree you've ever seen! We spent four days over Christmas...this home was perfect for our large family. We never wanted to leave because it was so cozy and comfortable. Loved the area and the beautiful farms and homes...even a picturesque covered bridge within walking distance. The owners and property managers were friendly and accomodating. We'd rent this home again in a heartbeat during any season!

A great family gathering spot

  • 5 of 5

We were three generations of family in town for a fourth generation's birthday party. The house was very comfortable and convenient. The weather was too cold (November) to enjoy the lake, but it was beautiful to look at, with striking sunsets and sunrises off the mountains in NY. The house was especially great for kids, with a playroom and the hosts' generous sharing of toys and other kid-friendly items. We highly recommend it and we may be back again!

Retreat By The Lake With Panoramic Views

  • 5 of 5

Every year we try to get away with our family for a vacation. This includes myself and wife, my two daughters and son-in-laws, and my two grandkids. We really enjoyed this home.

The views and setting were spectacular with plenty of privacy.

The accommodations were more than enough for our group. It can easily accommodate 12 or even more. There's room for everyone to "spread out" and do their thing, TV, reading, taking a snooze. The kitchen was well stocked with all the cooking utensils required and we had all our meals there. The porch and the deck is a great way to spend "happy hour" and enjoy a meal.

The heated swimming pool was a hit for all. Morning, evening, or night.

My son-in-law rented a boat for sightseeing and tubing. A perfect place for all water activities. A note of caution. If you want to rent a boat do it as early as you can. We were advised that on the Vermont side of the lake rentals are pretty much booked up by May. We ended up rented one on the New York side. Somewhat of a nuisance to drive down and pick up but the boat ride back and forth gave us a good view of the lake.

Overall a great experience. While we try to go to a different place each year this property is on our list for another round of fun.

Owner's Response: I'm so delighted you and your family had such a great time at our house, Jim. It was very hard for us when we left Vermont for the West Coast, and we took comfort in the thought that other families now get to enjoy our beautiful slice of the lake, too. Hope you come back!
