About John

Randall and Bess Morehouse maintain their home base in Hilo, Hawaii; but love to visit Colorado as often as possible. They have a son in Denver and enjoy visiting the city, the mountains, and other sites in the area.

John purchased this house in 2007

Why John chose Golden

The moment we saw this house, we knew it was the 'one.' Sitting up on a slope, it catches gentle breezes and has a lovely view of the town of Golden. The front yard consists of landscaped terraces and the back yard - with no neighbors behind - is perfect for relaxing or entertaining.

The neighborhood, which includes 100 year-old homes, is quiet and charming. We have made many improvements to the property since we purchased it, including stabilizing the foundation, painting interior and exterior, installing new windows, new roofing, and new appliances; including range, washer/dryer, A/C and furnace. We love to walk into town and to stroll along scenic Clear Creek on a regular basis.

What makes this house unique

Our guests tell us they love to relax and enjoy the view from our new front porch. In the winter, snowy hillsides and city lights are in view, and in the summer July 4 fireworks can be enjoyed. Although the house is an easy 15 minute walk from the Golden main street area, wildlife including deer and fox occasionally visit the property

Colden View Cottage more than met our needs - three family members for a family get together for 4 days and nights. Beds comfortable, great shower with plenty of hot water, bright kitchen and gathering area with lots of sunlight and view. I think we were the first rental of the Spring season, so there were a few kinks to work out, but they were minor and didn't affect the visit. Rental agency was very responsive to answer questions. Lovely view at night lookin down on the length of Golden and the College campus. Small kitchen area with limited counter space and room for only three at the kitchen table - we moved the table to the living room for Easter dinner when we had four, We would certainly return for another visit. We give it 3 1/2 stars only because it was quite small, not because there was anything wrong.

Not as it appears

  • 3 of 5

This house is in a good location, walkable to downtown. Not as walkable to Mines. The house is VERY small. There were many things unsatisfactory and the pictures do not properly represent the property. The tile flooring throughout the house has major large cracks. In the pictures, temprorary rugs are covering these large cracks. Don't walk barefoot as I almost cut my foot on the broken tiles in the kitchen and after walking through the house in just my socks, the bottom of my socks were black (house cleaners obviously do no regularly mop the tiles). There were numerous things wrong with the house that I did not call the management company about because there was no way they could have fixed the issues during our stay. These included: many of the dishes, glasses and silverware were dirty (even though they were in the drawers/cabinets. Housecleaning clearly does not check them - one of the cookie sheets under the stove was filthy with old bread crust stuck to it) we washed nearly every plate, glass and utensil). You could not turn the ceiling fan light off in the bedroom unless you turn the fan off - the chain to turn the light off didn't pull down - so no fan at night.Curtains in the bedroom have holes in them. Oven did not work- I had to trace the power chord through the cabinets to learn the power chord to the oven was unplugged. TV Cable only had ONE channel - I read the "welcome" book and it offered instructions in case the cable didn't work. I followed the instructions and it did not fix it. Instead, I manually reset the cable box and used the TV menu to "search for channels" to get the channels to show up (good thing I know AV). The couches in the front room are gross - covered with stains. We didn't want to sit on them. The dining table only has 3 chairs, so if you have four people, one person can't eat at the tiny table. The inside shower curtain is disgusting and covered in soap scum (again something housecleaning should have replaced.) We have rented many VRBO properties and we do not consider ourselves to be picky and we did not expect a house that was a 4 star property. But this house was a disappointment. If we felt that the owners could have fixed things during our visit, we would have called and perhaps they could have addressed some things. However much of the issues were housecleaning AND fundamental flaws with the house - i.e. cracked floors/foundation. I wish I could give a better review. This house is simply not well maintained

Owner's Response: Thanks for your comments. We were unaware of the fan and curtains, so we will tackle repair and upgrade of those. Also, the maids have been reminded about the dishes, but that is something we are attune to usually. Some corrections are due here. The maids mop the floor between every guest and they do a great job. Part of our quality control after each maid change out is to check the dishes and the floors. Steam clean of couches, shower curtain replacement happens this week. Comcast cable TV worked fine, floors were clean and dishes were clean from our recent walkthrough.

Very well located home near downtown and highway access. Very well set up and the owners are very nice and easy to get a hold of if needed. We will be staying here hopefully on our next trip. Comfortable beds, plenty of linens and well stocked kitchen. Highly recommended!
