Why Alida O'Toole chose Marathon

We travel many times to the Florida Keys and always had the dream to buy a property here. We went to visit a friend in Marathon in a quiet peaceful neighborhood on Morton Street and fall in love with the area and decided to look for a vacation home in paradise. Marathon was just perfect because is closer to the larger beaches in the Keys Bahia Honda and Sombrero Beach. Its also closer for a day trip to Key West.

What makes this house unique

When be found this house we knew it was the perfect spot. The breathtaking open water views of the Gulf of Mexico, watching the sunset, swimming in the pool, waking in the long dock while discovering the sea life. It is just AMAZING!

The house was very clean and had all the extras. My kids spent the entire vacation in the swimming pool or fishing on the dock. We caught all kinds of different fish, including three small sharks! Snorkeling was also great. My wife and I enjoyed the hammock and hanging out on the dock with the kids. The location is fabulous. Very close to some great restaurants and entertainment. I will definitely come back.

Great house - seaweed an issue

  • 2 of 5

The house itself is great. Layout nice, plenty of extra beds and blankets which was handy when our 9 and 11 year olds had a spat at bedtime and didn’t want to share one of the queens. Plenty of towels. Kitchen has everything you need. Pool decent size. Some of the chairs were really old and rusty and held together with tape. They really should be thrown out - better to just have fewer chairs then a dangerous situation. There were other chairs to use so they weren’t missed. The shared shower has better water pressure then the master so if you have long hair better spot for you to wash. Life vests are large or infant so if you have anyone in between wanting to kayak plan on bringing your own. Snorkel equipment available but same situation - and most of the snorkels getting old and pretty beat up but every store down there sells this stuff from inexpensive to high end so easy to pick up. View Lovely. Dock has a nice bench for sitting.

Despite all the positives we would not stay here again unless the seaweed situation is resolved. The neighboring houses manage the seaweed, but this owner has chosen not to and the neglect is a major issue. The first two days were hot and humid and the rotting seaweed smelled awful making it difficult to enjoy the pool and screened in porch but we muscled through it. Everyone was holding their noses as they passed it on the dock. Then the heat died down but the winds picked up and it was even worse. The second you stepped outside it was overwhelming. It was so disappointing to not be able to enjoy the pool and screened porch and hammock. This lasted 4 days. It was so disappointing to rent a house for the pool, porch, view etc then feel stuck inside or looking for places to go to spend the day elsewhere because we couldn’t enjoy the house we paid for because of the smell.

The owner says it’s nature. It is, I understand, but nature needs help sometimes. We have a house in Cape Cod and winds and storms bring up seeweed and we rake it up. After the four days of winds, the neighbor’s Dock area was also filled with seaweed but as soon as the winds stopped they cleaned it out. I don’t think this house has had the seaweed managed in a very long time. There is an extremely thick solid mat that is 8-10 feet off the rocks/beach that is rotting and smells awful and is collecting garbage. It isn’t going away on its own and just getting worse with neglect. It’s a real shame. If it was managed I would have given 4/5 stars.

Owner's Response: Dear Cailin, We're extremely sorry that you had to experience a bad week of seaweed and odor. We recently purchased this property and we are aware and working on addressing the issue of the seaweed that accumulates in the shore line. Grassy Key is where the ocean and the Gulf breezes steadily blow. Depending on how the wind blows this causes seaweed to gather on either side. It is nature and I agree with you that nature sometimes needs help. We maintain and clean as much as we can but unfortunately it all comes back, making this an endless fight (please see the pictures on our site of the clean shore). There are months that are worse than others and believe it or not it has not been sitting there for a very long time nor have we neglected to maintain it. As a next step to approach the situation we are installing a seaweed barrier. This will happen the second week of April 2018. It is our top priority to make our guest enjoy their vacation and build wonderful memories. We may not be able to change the past but we sure hope to resolve this to benefit all our future guests.

Very nice home!

  • 4 of 5

This home is lovely. Everything was very clean, immaculately kept and fully equipped with utensils, dishes, linens and other necessities. Beautiful screened-in porch with very comfortable furniture. We ate out there every day; perfect for reading and spending time with the family. Beautiful, private beaches very close by; one only 2 & 1/2 miles away. The only thing that wasn't ideal about this location was the tide was low so the water didn't come right up to the sand line/beach area. There was a lot of seaweed that smelled --'salty'. But it rained a couple of nights so that smell was washed away and wasn't there the entire week. Pool was great!! Heated and we were in it every day! I'd highly recommend this home if you're looking for a nice home to stay at in the Keys.

Great place to relax

  • 5 of 5

My family and I enjoyed our stay at Sunset Catch. The home is clean, nicely decorated, comfortable beds, plenty of linens, and a great kitchen with every thing you need. The view is breath taking and we enjoyed sitting out in the screened in porch in the evenings after dinner. The entire family enjoyed the pool area and thankfully we paid the additional fee to have it heated as the evenings were cool. Alida answered my calls and emails right away which I was thankful for. I would definitely stay again and we have asked Alida if the seaweed from the storm (at times had an odor depending on direction of wind)could be cleaned up the next time we come , which we will again next year!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your excellent review on our newest property. We love having you and your family stay at Sunset Catch. We are working into a method to control nature of the weather that at times depending on the tides brings thick seaweed to the shoreline. We look forward for your return next year!
