Overview

About the property

Charming 2 bedroom, 1 bath home. Pet and kid friendly. Fantastice views.

The Bunkhouse is one of 4 vacation rentals on a 60 acre property of rolling hills on the edge of the Texas Hill Country. The house sits on top of one of the highest hills in the area so from there you have fantastic views of the countryside. Just outside the yard fence cows are grazing. Come sit on the porch swing and enjoy the fresh air and ever-present breezes. Surrounding the house are ancient live oaks which have lived there since before the German immigrants who settled the area arrived in the mid 1800's. And even though you are in the quiet of the country it is only a few minutes to the towns of New Braunfels, Seguin or San Marcos. All three offer visitors a variety of attractions plus many restaurants, shops and recreational opportunities. And in just about 30 to 45 minutes you can drive to San Antonio or Austin and enjoy all that those cities have to offer.

The house has 2 bedrooms each with a queen bed plus there is a queen size sofa sleeper in the living room. The kitchen and living/dining areas provide a nice open space to gather. There is a separate utility room with washer and dryer. On the wrap-around porch are picnic tables, chairs and a porch swing. A charcoal grill is provided. A small fenced yard is a good place for your pets or children to play. But you can also enjoy the ample space outside the yard fence!

About Sherman and Joy Schlichting

This property has been in our family since the mid 1800s when our German ancestors came to Texas seeking a better life. They settled in these hills and grew cotton, various other crops, cattle and kids. Lots of things have changed since then but one thing has not - our love for this place! Joy grew up in The Farmhouse on top of the hill. The Bunkhouse was once a detached garage. We moved The Cabin and Opa's Haus onto the property and restored them. We are now trying to restore the land. We have planted several acres with native grasses and other native species in an attempt to help the land heal from years of use. Our hope is that we will provide a habitat for some species of wildlife that have been driven into near extinction. We also enjoy providing a place where families can spend time together in a quiet space free from the hustle and bustle of city life. So come enjoy the country!

Perfect weekend escape.

Great place to get away from the city, especially since we wanted to bring our dogs. It was just far enough away from New Braunfels, Seguin, and San Marcos, but close enough to get into town. We will come back!

Peaceful

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay. The dogs loved having space to run around and the children enjoyed getting to know the cows and barn cats. The views are amazing and the porch is a perfect place to sit and watch the hummingbirds. A good size for us, a family of five, and not far from New Braunfels. Would definitely recommend.

Great location mixed seclusion with convenience

  • 5 of 5

We ended up switching from the bunkhouse to the cabin which is a building that have parts of it that were erected in mid 1800's, but you would not know it. It was the perfect place for us, simple but everything you need. Really enjoyed watching the sun come up over the pond each morning. We had a great time at the place and in Gruene and other spots nearby.

The hosts were very responsive and friendly, they even stopped by to say goodbye.

Great views and very quiet

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for a week and really enjoyed it. 15 minutes from Seguin, New Braunfels, and San Marcos. A nice quiet getaway sitting on a hilltop that can see for miles all around. Would definitely stay again.

Pictures do not do this house justice. It was perfect. It was clean and packed with everything you would need. The views are amazing. You’re just a quick trip to New Braunfels or San Marcos.

Relax and recharge!

  • 5 of 5

For my wife’s birthday I wanted to surprise her by surrounding her with some of the things she loves - dogs and cattle. We have 3 rescues and I was looking for dog friendly accommodations in a rural setting. I booked with Sherman and Joy based on 1 photo of a pasture.

Their property overdelivered as far as we’re concerned. The Bunkhouse was perfect for our needs. Privacy - as you turned off the FM road and slowly drove the 200 yard caliche driveway to the top of the hill to the Bunkhouse. Shade - There were a couple of Live Oak I’d guess over 150 years old as well as mature Pecan trees whose branches extended over the Bunkouse. Scenery - You know beauty is in the eye of the beholder and Joanne and I have been lucky enough to visit several countries around the world and have seen many things but for our time together this time our back porch view of cattle grazing 40’ away as the sun was setting all the while listening to the sounds of the birds and the cicadas and the leaves rustling in the constant breeze is something we shall always cherish.

The Bunkhouse has a small fenced in back yard to keep the dogs from roaming and while we never left them alone it was handy when it came time to unload and load the car.

The Bunkhouse itself is well done 2 bedroom, 1 bath, kitchen, laundry and living area with comfortable furniture. We enjoyed the simplicity of design within and without. Tile floors, the recycled doors and door frames, the high beds from another era all contributed to remind you that here you leave your cares and worries behind and just enjoy where you are. Outside the landscaping is “controlled wilderness” as Sherman told us. Native plants and grasses in profusion around the Bunkhouse and fence lines yet contained in limestone edged beds.

And clean, clean, clean! No concerns in that department.

I had booked us for just a 2 night stay and intended another 2 nights in Wimberley. This time an unpleasant surprise as we were disappointed with our dog friendly Wimberley accommodations. I called Joy that afternoon and asked if the Bunkhouse was still avaliable for that night. She said it was but only for that night. We packed up the crew and headed back to the Bunkhouse. Our road trip may have ended a day early but what mattered most was that it ended on a happy note.

Sherman and Joy made it possible for us. Fantastic place simply unwind or if you choose a good base of operations in proximity to Hill Country fun.

We’ll be back.
