An Eco-Vacation Rental in the Forest up in the Trees...

Are there still some adventurous, Huck Finn type sparks alive in you? Then turn up your Jurassic Big Island experience another notch by staying in this unique, hand-made, GENUINE treehouse built 20 ft. up into 5 living, native Hawaiian ohia trees.

Look down onto the reaching fronds of amazing hapu'us (giant tree ferns) from huge windows and lanais all around, providing 360-degree birds-eye views of this secure, private 4 acre paradise. Witness the thrills of nature's interactions while nestled in homey comforts, including full-kitchen and bath, TV/DVD, music and more to modernize your Swiss Family Robinson experience.

Fall asleep while star-viewing from your comfy bed perched high up in the spacious loft. Some nights, even the volcano's red glow is visible.

A real-deal treehouse... located between two active volcanic vents... in Hawaii... you might never want to leave! But Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the charming artist colony of Volcano Village are nearby if you do.

Huck Finn says: For the creative, environmentally sensitive types, not the fussy. This truly 'green' structure was intentionally built in the most non-invasive manner, using high grade building wood and reconditioned windows, doors, and most everything else (including the 'kitchen sink!') And after 6 years of testing by various forces of nature, it's structural integrity has been proven to be sound and solid. And the trees are happy, too.

About Skye Peterson

Skye is a master treehouse builder in Hawaii. He lives on property adjacent to this genuine (full house in the trees) TreeHouse. Years of effort, energy and artistry went into the design and construction of each unique treehouse.

He comes from the east coast, Pa. Md and N.J. and traveled thru out the US for many years and eventually landed in Hawaii in 1980. Which was home base for years of international travels until settling down in Volcano Village in the late 80's and starting his new enthusiasm of TreeHouse building out of recycled materials creating his beautiful master pieces, which became his future homes.

One never knows where they will end up if they just follow your hearts is a life lesson he learned and lived.

Skye Peterson purchased this cabin in 1989

Why Skye Peterson chose Volcano

I'm now sharing what was my private home on secluded 4 acres of Hawaiian rainforest for many years, with others that have been bitten by the TreeHouse bug like I was.

What makes this cabin unique

- A genuine treehouse (take sleeping in a real TreeHouse it off your bucket list!!)

- Right down the road from the craters and red hot lava in Kilauea Volcano at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park -- active with lava flows since 1983.

- Comfortably living in the treetops of Hawaiian Rainforest with dry, warm indoor viewing thru giant windows and outdoor decks at the same level weaving 80 feet out thru the existing trees.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I don't know how many other vacation rental owners meet and greet their guests but I do, it's fun. I so appreciate meeting the kindred spirits who seek out TreeHouses to stay in. I have enjoyed many great conversations and count most of my past guests as my friends now. I delight in telling my new guests about the gathering of the recycled materials and the building of my TreeHouses ( which took 6 years) as well as all the wonderful places to visit and things to experience and hikes to take around the Volcano area, inside the National Park, in Volcano Village, and in Pahoa area near by and other unique places on the Big Island. TreeHouse enthusiasts are my favorite people and an all around good lot.

Amazing Treehouse

  • 5 of 5

Skye's treehouse is amazing! It is truly a once in a lifetime experience. My husband, our 2 kids (ages 11 and 8), and I loved it!! We originally were going to book 2 nights, but changed it to 3 nights, and we're so glad we did! You really get the full experience of the volcano from staying so close to it for a few nights. The treehouse truly is a piece of art. The details are amazing. The complete use of recycled and reclaimed items is unbelievable. Skye seems to have thought of everything a couple or family would need for an enjoyable stay. A few points: I was shocked there were NO bugs (I bought insect repellent and did not need it), I was shocked there was an upscale restaurant just minutes away with the kindest people and delicious food (we ate there all 3 nights), the beds were all very comfortable (the kids LOVED the smaller areas where they slept), there IS hot water so you can enjoy your shower. If you want to add even more adventure to your Hawaiian vacation, you must include a stay at Skye's treehouse. It is really beyond compare.

Owner's Response: What can I add to that wonderful review? I so love sharing my TreeHouses with folks that enjoy nature and appreciate my unique, unusual and creative getaways especially when there is the most user friendly active Volcano just minutes away and still great restaurants to eat at also that close. Have adventure with out being uncomfortable and excitement without danger but do stay enough nights to really get the most out of this very special place.

Amid Hawaiian Treetops!

  • 5 of 5

As part of our honeymoon adventure, my new husband and I had a wonderful night at Skye's treehouse. Just a 5 minute drive down the road from the world's most active volcano, his beautiful hand-built treehouse nestles half-hidden in a secluded rainforest. We enjoyed a night of tree-top living like the Swiss Family Robinson, 20 feet off the ground and held up by native 'ohi'a trees. The house looked even more enchanting at night as the outdoor lanais and raised walkways twinkled with fairy lights and led you out into the rainforest, amongst the giant ferns! This house is so much fun, we loved the playful interior, where wooden branches replace handles and rails and kids will adore the secret access to a little bedtime nook via a child-size ladder. We climbed up into our giant branch framed bed for the night and drifted to sleep to the sounds of the rainforest. It was an amazing experience and one we'll never forget!

Skye was also incredibly helpful and knowledgeable about the surrounding area, offering us great tips on local restaurants in the nearby village of Volcano and advice on getting the most out of a visit to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the rest of the island. Our top tip is to grab your binoculars and make the most of the treehouse's great location and revisit the volcano crater at night, when the bubbling lava glows neon red under the starry skies!

Green Forest Escape

  • 5 of 5

Masterpiece design and setting in the sky! Had such a fabulous relaxing escape together with the perfect rainy weather back drop. Everything we needed there, days needed just to discover and appreciate all the amazing architecture features Skye has created. So beautiful at night with all the lights!!! Please let us come back!

Owner's Response: I built theTreeHouse not only to be unique but also to be relaxing and fun with interesting nooks and crannies and lots of big windows to let the lush forest just outside to seem like it's inside with you, and amazingly very few bugs, mostly moths. It would be great anywhere but it's on one of the most active but user friendly Volcanos in the world. Even when it's raining it's a treat to just relax and enjoy the pitter patter on the roof and skylights. Despite the fact it's eco living, solar electric, and catching the rain for all water needs, and having fires in the fireplace for the occasional cool night and the romantic ambiance you don't lose any of the comforts of modern life ( kitchen, hot shower, flush toilet and comfy beds), it's the best of both worlds. Come let the KID in you out to be dazzled and delighted.

My husband and I stayed in the Treehouse for three nights and it was a magical experience! The house is beautiful and we loved how everything is made of natural and recycled materials. There are huge windows everywhere, so the views from every part of the house are amazing. The lanai was such a relaxing and peaceful place to sit and enjoy the forest. We had everything we needed in the house, and Volcano National Park was just a quick drive away, so this was the perfect place to stay while exploring the park. Skye was a wealth of information and gave us a lot of tips about the area when we arrived. We loved the treehouse, and we highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique adventure in Hawaii.

Owner's Response: I feel it is my privilege to host folks that like nature and artistry and appreciate the using of recycled materials. There is no HomeDepo items in my TreeHouses, they are mostly made of the older fixtures from when things were made with pride. All the big windows were brought over on the barges from Honolulu, rescued from the dump to live again in my creations with dignity. Tucked away in the forest with nothing around but nature these places are not for the disco crowd. Quiet contemplation and communing with nature is what I want to offer, it's not for everyone. Step out onto the decks that are at the same height as the Treehouses reaching out into the forest 80 feet with bends and turns created by the random nature of the supporting Trees with areas for sitting and sipping some of the wonderful coffee I supply. I've been here for 30 years and can help you plan a full itinerary with info, upon you're arrival, about the Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park just a few miles away, lava viewing and good eateries also near by, and some hikes and sites that will make your stay memorable. People who respect life and the awesomeness of nature are the ones I want to share my unique TreeHomes with, if that's you... I invite you to come and enjoy!

What a gem!!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4 thoroughly enjoyed staying in Skye's Treehouse for 2 x nights. From the moment we met Skye we could see how passionate he was about his Treehouse masterpiece and the Volcano area. He gave us plenty of information and answered any questions we had. The Treehouse was a home away from home with everything you need - with little extras like dvd's, games, music, candles, books, etc....It was truly a tranquil setting in the middle of a rainforest. The Volcano National Park was a short 5min drive away which made it easy to come and go - day and night. My only wish was that we should have stayed longer. So much to see and do. I'd love to come back 1 day and stay longer at the Treehouse and see more of the Big Island from the Volcano side. I highly recommend staying in the Treehouse - it will be a highlight of your holiday as it was ours.

Treehouse Experience

  • 5 of 5

Loved the treehouse - very clean, fascinating things around every corner, impressed with all the recycled wood and other items in the house, felt like we were truly in the jungle. We were constantly finding unusual things in the house that Skye had decorated. Skye could not have been a better host. Because of all his advice, we were able to streamline our activities and not waste time. Would highly recommend this very fun experience to anyone.

Owner's Response: I truly enjoy my job, hosting folks on vacation in my own TreeHouse that I built with my own 2 hands. I love sharing all the unique places around our Volcano area to hike or eat or swim or just stand in awe of something incredibly powerful and unusual and very user friendly, Kilauea Volcano and it's Lava. Showing off a real TreeHouse for living in is amazingly fun and rewarding. Very few have ever been in a TreeHouse that was built to live in comfortably, a TreeHome actually, and to see the look on their faces when they climb the 30 stairs up into the place and look around at the artistry, the tree trunks running up thru the whole building and all the huge windows with giant Tree Ferns just outside brushing against the glass and hear the kids running around giggling in glee at the fun sleeping areas they will be crawling into to dream in, about the bright red firey lava or the huge lava fields and cinder cones, craters and many other first time visions here to take in. What a job! What a life! Come experience for yourself some first time, one and only time maybe, surprises life has in store for you and your family.

About 7 miles away is the Volcano Golf club

The Treehouse is near the Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park, where you can view the glowing crater, it's about 7 minutes away. Also Kalapana, where the lava has been entering the ocean is a 40 minute drive. Hilo is where all the water sports are also the movies and museums and is about 30 minutes away. Another fun event is exploring old lava tubes, with a guide if you like.
