Lovely Apt. W/Grand Piano in Oltrarno near Pitti Palace

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,184 sq. ft.
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Apartment, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 3-4)

This is a lovely, elegant and quiet apartment, totally renovated with central heating, central AC (just installed a $10,000 system!) and with new appliances, in the heart of Florence. Yes, 7 min. walk from the Ponte Vecchio on the Arno River, and you will be so, so, so happy not to be living in the middle of the mobs of tourists and selfie-stick vendors. Oltrarno is by far the best, least touristy neighbourhood. We are at Via Romana 29, 50 meters from the entrance to the Boboli Gardens, next door to the Pitti Palace. You will find a magnificent Yamaha C2 piano, the fastest wi-fi internet in Italy, a new SMART TV with DVD and VHS player and a new SONY audio system that will permit you to play your own music via Bluetooth from you cell phone or a USB plug.

It consists of an entrance and living room, a fully equipped kitchen with a table for four, two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a closet room, central heating, telephone, washer, dishwasher, microwave, and insect screens on the windows!

My wife and I came to Italy in 1973, when I began work as a photographer. Our pianist/composer son, William, who was born and raised in Italy, lived in this flat a couple of years before deciding to seek his fortune back in the U.S.A.

Florence needs no introduction. Suffice it to say that Unesco (the cultural branch of the United Nations) did a study 15 years ago which declared that 60% of the world's artistic heritage is on Italian soil. 30% of that is in Florence alone. But if that isn't enough to tickle your fancy, remember the Chianti vineyards within 30 min. drive, the towns of Lucca, Siena, San Gimignano, Arezzo and Pisa, the beaches of Viareggio and the Maremma, all easy drives on excellent roads. Florence is only a 90 min. train ride from Rome on the high-speed trains and Umbria is the region just south of Tuscany. So within two hours you can reach Perugia, Spoleto, Assisi and that magical town Todi, where we also rent a home (see Listing 215677).

About The Owner

My wife, Lynn, and I moved to Italy way back in 1973 after graduating from Beloit

College in Wisconsin, where we met. I'm a photographer and Lynn teaches English.

We bought this apartment for our two children William and Alice, but they have

chosen to seek their fortunes elsewhere. William, a pianist and composer, lives in NYC

and Alice, a dancer and choreographer, lives in London.

The Owner purchased this apartment in 2007

Why The Owner chose Ponte Vecchio

This is a particularly choice location. It is only 100 yards from the Pitti Palace and Boboli

Gardens and on the Oltrarno side of the river, a neighborhood much less touristy and full of

artisans workshops and markets. Still, it's only a 7 min. walk to the Ponte Vecchio over the Arno River.

What makes this apartment unique

It is a spacious and quiet apartment, completely refurbished with all the amenities, including a great collection of music, a Yamaha C2 piano, and VHSs and DVDs in English for your evening entertainment.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Nothing but plaudits for both these sites, an in-town 12th/13th century villa in Todi, Umbria, and an in-city apartment in Florence on the Via Romana just a few minutes away from the Pitti Palace. Both dwellings are fully modern and elegant in their different ways; both are right in the middle of the best of their localities -- restaurants, museums/galleries, varied boutique shopping and more; both are really within walking distance to everything that matters -- forget about the car. And both are spotless and very reasonably priced -- far more attractive than the hotel option.

We spent two weeks, one week at each location, and were delighted with everything. Of special note -- George, our landlord, oversaw all the detail of our planning, arrival, stay and departure with personal concern. And this was important. We don't speak Italian and were a little leery of getting by in a real neighbourhood -- shopping, transportation, entertainment. But no problem. George's advice and ample local literature made it all easy.

We'd do it again. Great vacation.

One note -- Todi is a genuine hill town: climbing is a prerequisite for enjoymen, and touring the countryside by Car a wonderful experience -- i.e. a small car that fits in the medieval streets. My decision to go for a large power car because of the reputation of the autobahns was wrong -- I should have opted smaller. And in Florence -- get rid of the car asap."

This is an ideally located apartment, away from the tourist areas in a neighborhood of local shops where we were quickly welcomed as friends. The apartment itself was very spacious and comfortable for four adults and allowed us to unpack and really feel at home. We had the option to eat in after shopping at the local butcher, package store and pasticceria that George pointed out; and the chance to do laundry mid-week and the apartment was stocked with a full library of travel books that we used extensively.

George is an accommodating host, meeting us for early check-in, helping us park, suggesting travel destinations and restaurants and helping to arrange for our early morning taxi to the airport.

I would highly recommend this property and only wish we could have stayed longer!

Perfect apartment in a perfect location

  • 5 of 5

My son and I stayed in this apartment on the Via Romana, prior to his fall semester in Florence. The apartment is spacious and bright. The windows in the living room and one bedroom open to open spaces, without neighboring windows in view. There are shutters on the bedroom window, which allowed us to open the window to allow air, but screen for privacy.

The apartment is on the third floor( with ground level first). Well lit, wide staircase to the apartment.

The location felt very safe. We ate, shopped and talked with many of the store and restaurant owners near the apartment and all were welcoming. We felt very much at home. Most of the Italians spoke some English, and with our beginners Italian and a bit of Spanish, we were always able to communicate.

The location was perfect. We quickly became familiar with Florence, and found the tourist destinations, as well as the railway station within a 20 minute walk.

Finally, the owner George was helpful with suggestions of restaurants ... He made certain that we had everything we needed for a wonderful stay in Florence. Thank you George, I can't imagine how it might have been better!

This little gem of an apt is in the best location and neighborhood in Florence!

  • 5 of 5

First of all, not only is this apartment fantastic but it comes with and added bonus of a fabulous and attentive owner, George! My family came to Florence looking for a little more space - we had been staying all together in 1 room in both Rome and Positano and George's place offered us the space for everyone to have their own room, shut down and decompress at the mid-way mark of our 2 week trip. It was exactly what we needed. This apt has a great kitchen too and in hindsight we wish we had taken advantage of cooking in one night instead of going out. Right across the street is an awesome market with fresh fruit and vegetables. And an amazing patisserie just a few doors down that we got our fresh croissants from each morning. We were right next door to the Bobili Gardens and near the Pitti Palace and a short walk over to the bridge that linked us to the main city centre of Florence. This apartment was convenient to everything and SOOOOO quiet at night. George has all the amenities you could need, TV, NetFlix, Air Con. a folder full of nearby places to see and restaurant suggestions - he really is better than a concierge!!! And totally available - all our questions were answered within minutes. We were a family of 3 - this place was perfect for you. Thank you George, for sharing your beautiful place with us and for being our "Travel Angel" We look forward to visiting the bella Firenze again soon!!
