We had a great time at your cabins! I enjoyed every moment there! My dogs had a blast in the water! I was so happy with my stay we are making reservations for next year already ! Thanks you for having us!
This place is super cute and is just a short walk to the beautiful pond. It was perfect for our little getaway. There was a community fire pit overlooking the pond. The room could have been a little cleaner, but all in all it was GREAT!!
Very cozy cabin, well worth the money, beds were very comfortable. It does need to be cleaned better, lots of dust and grunge in bedroom corners and on walls
The view of lake was great. We were in cabin 1, But the cabins are really run down and not very clean. Oven was filthy and stove top and sink had deep scratches and chunks of porcelain hunks gone leaving black spots. Faucets had corrosion , water had a really bad smell. I could go on but I should stop. We will never stay there again or suggest it to our friends.
The Castaway Resort was exactly what I was looking for. Quiet, clean and cozy. My views of Croton Dam Pond were fabulous and I even got to see some Baltimore Orioles. I went for a week of solitude to spend time weaving on my little workshop loom. I had the peace and quiet I needed to concentrate. The Hosts, Bob and Joy were 100% available and accommodating, and my sweet dog Poppy was completely welcomed. I would definitely return. I'm thinking maybe in the fall when kids are back in school.
First time VRBO customer. Process for booking was easy, description of property was accurate. Communication with host was superb. Any issues we had were quickly taken care of. It was as you would expect a cabin to be: minimalistic. All flatware, cooking and BBQ utensils, pot, pan and baking sheet were provided. Pots are sized for cabins. If you intend to cook large group meals bring your own.
Very close to water, kayaks & life vests available. Paddle boat available for use.

Ok stay for the price
Nice view of the pond. Cabin felt dirty. The bathroom stunk like rust and the toilet seat was broken. The cabin had a musty smell and the walls and cabinets need cleaned. Boat near the dock seemed to be leaking fuel or oil because the water was oily and smelled of fuel. Area was what we expected. Everyone we encountered was friendly. We didn’t expect amazing due to cost but it definitely needs some updating.
Walked in and almost immediately turned around and left. Never even brought our things in. Smelled, dog hair on couch and bedding, dirty carpets, smaller than pictured, run down, cramped outdoor area to access cabin and extremely close to other cabins (one other connected). Requested refund and owner was not willing (said no complaints before). I do not usually leave bad reviews - I just move on. But this one I feel the owner should have done the right thing and at least partially refunded but instead he was rather rude.
The cottage was stocked with the essentials: towels, pillows, blankets, etc., though the kitchen tools and appliances were in need of a deep cleaning. In fact, the whole cottage was in need of a deep cleaning. The beds were comfortable, and overall, we were happy with the accommodations.
The outdoor common areas were the best parts of the whole stay. We had many nights by the fire, and spent the days in the lake, which was very easily accessible, but does get deep very quickly. The kayaks were not usable, as they had holes worn in the bottoms of them from being dragged in and out of the lake. There was also a wasp problem on the awning that hangs over the front of cottages 1 and 2.
We hiked a nearby trail one day, checked out the dam, and got some great ice cream at the Croton Bay Trading Post. Got firewood from the campground down the road. The locals were very friendly. Had a very nice lunch at The River Stop Cafe and good coffee and pastries at Timbertown Coffee in Newaygo.
We had one short interaction with the hosts, who were pleasant and open to suggestions about the property. Check in and check out was a breeze.
It was very beautiful property, and one of the cutest little Cottages I've seen. The manager was a nice man and his wife was just as nice. The only problem was a window blind that was missing. A very pleasant stay will always remember it with fondness. We'll have to plan another vacation here again.
My wife and I stayed at Castaways and had a great time. Fishing, paddleboat, and kayaking. Cabin was clean and comfortable with everything you could need.
Castaways Cottages are located between the Croton and Hardy Dams on the Muskegon River. There are about 10 steps down to the water’s edge. A dock extends into the water and a boardwalk runs the length of the property along the water’s edge with room to moor your boat if you choose to bring one along. While you visit, please feel free to take out the paddleboat and kayaks. Perhaps you'll catch sight of a bald eagle soaring above or a family of ducks gliding along the pond. You’ll feel the cares of life just melt away in the beauty of nature.
The cabin consists of the main living area with a seating area, tv, small eating area, and fully functioning kitchen (see photos). It has one bath and two bedrooms (one with a queen bed, and the other with a bunk bed). We provide linens, dinner ware, and basic utensils, pots and pans for cooking. Outside the cabin, under the awning, is a picnic table and a couple Adirondack chairs – a perfect spot to enjoy your morning coffee.
The community space is available to all guests. It has a platform that overlooks the water, a wooden swing for relaxing, and campfire pit with bench seating.
Downtown Croton is 2 miles away and has a couple restaurants, gas station, and grocery store. We are about 10 miles away from beautiful Newaygo with more shops, restaurants, and parks. We are minutes away from North Country Trails and the Dragon Trail - popular with both hikers and bikers. Do you want a day at a beach instead? The Hardy Operator’s Village Park is a couple miles away, just east of the Hardy Dam, and offers hours of fun with its sandy beach, playground and picnic areas.
