Property Needs to Be Updated Badly
While there are a number of positive things to say about the Hanelei Bay Resort and the two private condos we rented there are a number of concerns which causes me to overall rate this as a D experience. The condos were richly furnished and it can be easily seen that a designed had a heavy hand in its ambience. The photos that were depicted mostly accurately reflected what you got. Unfortunately what the photos don't show is the overall run down condition the condos were in. A paint job is badly needed, there were holes in the plaster around light switches, there was bare wall and holes around a replacement air conditioner that didn't fit the same space as the one it replaced, electrical receptacles would not securely hold two or even one plug, there was a dearth of dishes, pots and pans, silverware, glasses, etc., the netting draping the bed in the photos was missing giving a stark unfinished look to the bedrooms, the shower rod was unsecured causing it to fall down easily, insufficient dishwasher supplies, and other miscellaneous deficiencies. In addition, the resort itself had no or insufficient generators to take over when the island's power routinely went into rolling power outage which it did on multiple occasions. This is in keeping with the islands lack of sufficient infrastructure due to a burgeoning population that causes long traffic lines and jams making it unpleasant to move around the island. Much different than the other three times we have visited the island with the last being ten or so years ago. There were insufficient golf cart type carts to move people around the property which is very hilly or to deliver or pick up people and luggage, and the restaurant was closed apparently due to remodeling. There were positive things about the resort - the two pools, the beach, bar areas, and landscaping. However, the front desk did not know we had rented one condo with an adjoining lock out bedroom causing the lockout to not be ready for occupancy when we arrived well after the check in time. They also ran out of towels one afternoon by the pool which seems odd since this is a warm weather resort. All told I would not recommend either this resort or these condos. There are many other choices at the same price point available from which to choose.
Beautiful views but unit is in need of TLC
The Hanalei Bay Resort is built on the side of a fairly significant hill, which means that the parking lot and pool are separated from the buildings that are closest to the bay. This unit is in one of the Plumeria Buildings, which are situated in a gully. For individuals who have physical limitations, transport to and from the apartment is provided via motor cart. The resort charges a daily fee for parking, transportation to and from buildings, access to a gym (rusty equipment), slow Wi-Fi, and very nice pool towels. As an aside, we visited an open house in one of the Bamboo buildings, which are located up the hill from Plumeria. Those buildings have much easier access to the parking lot and pool and an extremely nice view of the bay as well.
There were elements of the unit that we were happy with: the view, the bed (very comfortable), and the AC (which worked well in the tropical July heat). Unfortunately, these positives were offset by several negatives. First, as others have pointed out, the apartment is suffering from neglect. Adding to the list (see other reviews): a dishwasher that tips over 15 degrees when the top shelf is extended, the humid heat exhaust from the dryer empties into the kitchen, an electrical outlet in the bedroom in serious need of attention, an exposed light bulb in the bathroom, sloppy bathtub caulking, etc. Any one of these issues might be ignored on their own, but together they tell a story of neglect. Second, the blinds in the master bedroom and living room are nonfunctional. Sitting on the master bed, I can plainly see people on the balcony of the adjacent unit. We’ve rented all over the world, but this is the first time we’ve stayed at a place without window coverings. I emailed the owner and he called us back immediately – we learned that he was aware of the problem with the blinds back in March (our stay was in July). Third, this unit has a loft with beds. However, the stairs to the loft are a safety issue…with smooth ceramic tiles on the steps and a handrail that does not reach the top of the stairs. Coming down the stairs should be performed with an abundance of caution.
We really wanted to like this unit. The view is magnificent and the owner is very pleasant to deal with. However, the needed TLC detracts from the experience. With that said, most of the issues can be easily addressed with a minimal amount of expense. The apartment has so much promise, but ultimately disappoints.
A little piece of heaven
Beautiful home. Gorgeous decorations. Fantastic view. Unfortunately there was a lot of cobweb when we checked in. Also, at departure time we were charged daily resort fees that was not mentioned in the listing. Otherwise, it would be a strong 5 star.
Has it all. Great views from every room. Looks out on mountains and bay. Adjacent to undeveloped land. Birds galore. Short walk to ocean. Home has all you need. Well appointed. Beautifully decorated. Resort has 2 pools. Numerous grills. Tennis courts. Restaurant. We will want to come again.

I've read a lot of reviews on this unit. Most reviews refer to this unit as being
"tired" and I'd have to agree with that. We experienced some minor maintenance issues to include, no cover over the bathroom light fixture, black mold in the AC unit in the loft, screen doors don't align well and have some holes in them, outlet in bedroom doesn't hold a plug, and a giant cockroach running around the loft area.
None of this ruined the trip for my son and I, and overall this unit is great. After all, how much time do you actually spend in the unit. We spent more time on the huge lanai than anywhere else. The place is functional and we cooked most meals here. Some reviews complained of lack of privacy because the blinds over the two sets of sliders are broken and non-functional. While this is true, no one can see in the place because there are no other units in front of you, so this was not a bother to us.
Overall this place was fantastic and I would stay in this unit again. The views from this unit make it all worth the 12-hour flights here!
We loved this unit. The mountain and ocean views were breathtaking. We loved lounging on the lanai over coffee and watching the birds. The condo is perfectly located away from the pool and bar so it is quiet and relaxing. The condo is very comfortable, spacious and very well appointed. We loved having access to the beach chairs and boogie boards. We hope to stay here again the next time we visit Kauai!
