Beautiful home situated in the Cape Fear Station area of Bald Head Island. Located beside the Commons, a large park where the kids can play, includes a tower that the kids can climb. Located close to the beach, and near the Shoals Club, at which as a guest staying in the Canterwood Cottage, you have full use of the pool, restaurants, and club amenities.

The Shoals Club is a very special place, where you can plan and have very special events from Weddings to Birthdays. Canterwood Cottage, also has membership at the Bald Head Island Club*, where you can golf, tennis and croquet on a beautifully manicured Croquet field (croquet whites required). There is also a club dining room, Delicatessen, and a second pool for your use. (*Please understand that even though we have both memberships, there is a temporary membership fee that the guest will pay for these privileges)

Home features a 6 person golf cart, bikes, boogie board, games and DVDs to enjoy! So come discover this very special place, hidden among the ancient live oaks, salt marsh and ocean environments, and walk around with the sea turtles, deer, fox, and raccoons. Bald Head has a turtle conservancy for the preservation of the sea turtle, and there are countless opportunities for guided tours about the island and day trips on sail boats, or captained skiffs.

After visting BHI for a few years we knew we wanted a home in Cape Fear Station. Canterwood Cottage was located where we feel, as do all our renters, the "perfect location". Canterwood Cottage is close to East Beach, The Shoals Club, and The Commons.

I would just like to say thank you for letting my wife and I stay at your beautiful home at Bald Head Island for our anniversary. It was our first time on the island and it was memorable, from the moment we arrived at Deep Point until the time we returned. Your home could not have been more welcoming to us, we really felt at home. We look forward to having the opportunity of staying at your home again in the future and this time with our two children ( I know they will love the bunk beds) and let them enjoy the island as well. Beautiful and cozy home on unique island!

Everything about this beautiful home was perfect for our girls and kids getaway. Not only was it beautiful, but it was very clean and well maintained. The owner, Ainsley was more than accommodating. She was in the process of buying a new golf cart, so she arranged for us to use a new one while we also had access to the older one. The living room furniture was all very new and clean. We felt at home immediately. Each family had a comfortable bedroom and a private bath, which was a definite necessity for 4 women and 4 children. The bunkbed room was a huge hit with the kids and provided a place for sleepovers. They loved having their own space. The great room/kitchen area was beyond perfect. The kitchen had everything we could possibly need. The furniture was comfy and there was plenty of room for everyone. We never felt like we were on top of each other when we were cooking, watching movies or playing games at the table in the evening. The beach was a short walk, but like I said, the owners also provided a new gold cart, with an even newer one on the way. There were plenty of linens on hand and we were told to call Ainsley if we had any concerns with the homes cleanliness and she would send someone out, but there were no complaints from us:). This island is a very unique island. There are no cars, which provides a level of relaxation I didn't even know existed. There are shops and stores on the island that will have most anything you need. I can't wait to go back and will definitely rent this "gem" of a home again!!

First off, I am not sure how this place gets all of its great reviews. Must be paid reviews or friends and family posting here.

Things started off bad even before we arrived. The owner, Ainsley, wouldn’t respond to voice mails or emails all the way up until a few days before we were supposed to leave. Multiple excuses for failures to communicate. The reviews here say how great she is to work with, but in our experience - not so much.

The house needs a lot of love. The furniture and beds are dated and worn. The foam toppers on the cheap beds are horrible to sleep on. The floors are marked up and dirty. The furniture needs to be replaced.

The night we arrived, the floors had dirt and food on them, sand all over the furniture and seats. It appeared as if the house hadn’t even been cleaned. We found long black hairs all over the bed sheets and other nasty markings. We then find out that the batteries in all of the remotes had been removed and we were unable to watch TV. The following morning we woke up to make coffee and found out the coffee maker was dead.

That night I sent Ainsley an email with a list of issues, no response. I followed up in the morning with a phone call and message, no response. Later that afternoon I get a text from the property manager saying he is following up. Never heard anything directly from Ainsley to apologize or give us an update.

The golf cart doesn’t have any plastic doors/windows to keep the rain off you. We were there for a wedding and got soaked in our dress clothes for both the rehearsal dinner and wedding. When I asked Ainsley about this, she said that a prior guest had torn the plastic off and they didn’t feel like replacing them.

To top all of this off, I find that Ainsley cashed my deposit check before we even returned from our trip. I immediately texted her and she responded that she hadn’t had time to send me an email to state why. She tells me the cleaning crew said that one of our party had put a comforter in the dryer and it burned. She was now going to charge me $200 for a new one. WHAT?!? No one in our party even used the laundry machines. Either Ainsley made the whole thing up, or her cleaning crew blamed us for something that they had done.

There are so many better options in BHI. It’s obvious that this owner is struggling to make ends meet and trying to squeeze every last penny out of the renters. Beware!

Owner's Response: I am saddened that a recent renter found it necessary to speak so negatively about his stay at our wonderful home. Unfortunately, during this renter's stay a set of new bedding and throw pillows was rendered unusable for the next guest. This was brought to my attention by our cleaning service the day the renter checked out and was communicated to him. Per the rental agreement all renters sign, guests are to leave the house as it was upon arrival to ensure the house is up to our high standards for the next guests. I charged $158 for a new comforter, duvet, and throw pillow replacing exactly what was ruined and refunded the renter the unused portion of the security deposit with a receipt for the purchases. I always try to have the house perfect for our renters and do my absolute best to deliver on that each and every time. A new coffee maker and batteries were delivered to the property within an hour of learning about the need. Having a property manager as well as a hardware store on the island makes it possible for me to be sure renters have a carefree stay. I think anyone looking at our property reviews on VRBO will find this to be true. The golf cart is a brand new 2016 custom 6 passenger club car that I feel renters will truly enjoy when exploring BHI. Our living room, dining room chairs, and patio furniture were all replaced in January 2016 and I love the new look for our renters. We hired an interior designer to help with the arrangement as we sparred no expense! This update included the interior of our home being repainted in December 2015 in a beautiful Stonington grey.This is one of my favorite colors and I have been asked many times by renters for the name. I feel our beds are the best part of our your stay at our home. They are so amazing and comfortable we frequently get great reviews based just on them. We have rented our beautiful home for many years to over 250 renters with a large number of them returning every year. Our renters are like our family and your needs are my needs. BHI is a fantastic place to visit and our hope has always and continues to be providing guests with a worry free stay in accommodations we are truly proud of. I apologize that we apparently fell short on your expectations and promise to continue to work harder to ensure the satisfaction of every renter. Our Favorite Bald Head House, Feels Like Home!

We just finished a five night stay at this wonderful house and we all left wanting to book for next year! It was our fifth time at Bald Head and our second time at this house. This house is all around the best fit and value for our family. Since we stayed last, the owners had updated the living room furniture and have a brand new 6 person golf cart (made us feel real fancy in parking lots!). Things that stand out about this place over others: (1)REALLY comfortable beds. When I stayed two years ago, I was 4 months pregnant and had a much better time sleeping than in my own bed! (2) Rooms are equipped with useful bed sizes for family and guests (1 King/2 queens/ 2 bunk beds). Some houses we have stayed at have fulls or two rooms with twin beds which makes it really hard to bring adult couples. (3) Baby/Toddler friendly. There are two pack n' plays, a stroller, a high chair and beach sand toys for kids, which makes packing for the island so much easier! (4) Cape Fear Station is our favorite location on the island, walking distance to beautiful beaches in case someone in the house takes off with the cart. (5) The owner is so great to deal with and always prompt with responses. When our family has stayed in other houses with property manager contacts, it has often been sloppy and stressful. Property managers don't seem to respond as timely and they just don't take pride in your positive stay the way this owner does. Stay here!

Our best stay yet on BHI

While my husband and I have been vacationing on BHI for many years, other members of our family had yet to experience it. When it was our turn to host a Spring Sibling Getaway, we jumped at the chance to get everyone over to the island. After a brief search online we decided this house was THE ONE! Working with the owner, Ainsley, was a breeze. The house and crofter were perfect for the seven adults in our extended family - enough room for when we wanted to spend time together and enough room for when we needed space. The house itself is well furnished and comfortable - coastal casual, yet with an understated elegance. The location of the house is perfect - close to the park, South Beach and the Shoals Club. Everyone in our party had such a great time, they're already talking of booking it again for next year!

Beautiful home. Very clean. We had a good amount of bumps in the road with the golf cart and bikes breaking which was hard since they are only way of transportation. Once I made Ainsley aware of no transportation she had a rental cart ASAP and checked on us daily. Thank goodness she was worried and considerate in our situation. I have had owners on VRBO just leave you out there to fend for yourself with problems. She made this 5 stars and I'd return as the transportation problems were out of her control and she and the house were wonderful!

Tranquil and relaxing!

Very well kept home with a tranquil atmosphere. Felt immediately at home and relaxed! Nicely decorated. Beautiful location in the forest, yet close to the beach and Shoals Club. Owner was very accommodating and aware of our every need. Would love to stay here again!
