As advertised... charming with lovely owners. Advice for families with TODDLERS + foodie rec's

  • 5 of 5

This is our second year staying at this property for 8 days for a vacation in Door Cty. We're a family of 5, including children ages 11, 9 and 2.5.

The Ireland family (property owners) are wonderful to rent from-- communicative, flexible, and thoughtful, and the property itself is a lot of fun to spend time in. We've been appreciative of all the things that are included/available for use at the home that one sometimes finds lacking at other vacation rentals. From dry firewood outside and the Cuisinart stand mixer in the kitchen to the cooking gadgets, laundry detergent and easily accessible backup stocks of paper towels and the like... what you need is here.

For anyone with toddlers considering this home, two observations that may be helpful. First, there is little to no outdoor space for small-child play. The area in front of the house is covered with wood chips. Our experience both years is that much of this washes away each summer with heavy rains, leaving a lot of mud which makes for muddy, messy kids, shoes, and clothes. It'd be nice to see that grassed someday, and given that the Ireland's seem to continually add improvements to the property maybe someday they'll get to that one. In the meantime, if you are a get-up-and-go family not prone to spending hours at the home, you'll be fine. But if you are looking to relax while your kids play, you may find it more challenging.

Second, the open stairwell to the loft area will give you heart palpitations. It is almost ladder-steep... a toddler's dream staircase to climb, and a parent's nightmare! (The stairs to the basement are more typically pitched stairs). Because of the unique design, normal baby gates aren't going to work on these stairs. Last year our daughter wasn't walking yet, so no problem. This year, after some thinking ahead, we brought two plastic shelving sections (24" x 36") and used 18" bungees to secure them at the top and bottom of the loft staircase. We could step over, but our daughter couldn't go up or down... which made for a MUCH more relaxing stay. The Ireland's do supply a pressure fit baby gate for the basement, but our experience is that it was not a good fit, and hence wasn't safe to use... but kudos to them for trying to provide a solution. This year we just left the basement stairs open, and our toddler went up and down without too many wipeouts.

Hope this advice helps- it's a lovely home with lovely owners!

Wonderful Secluded Cabin

  • 5 of 5

Our family really enjoyed our stay at Hidden Bear Cabin ~ it was clean, cozy and a secluded area with beautiful trees and surroundings. We had campfires in the evenings and family dinners at their wooden table that fit our family of seven comfortably! Area was near Egg Harbor and surrounding small towns so we were also able to also explore the area and activities and than return to the comfort of the cabin. Cabin decorations were beautiful and inspirational ~ we felt blessed to be able to enjoy this beautiful cabin with our family!

Loved our cabin!

  • 5 of 5

Our family recently spent 7 nights at Hidden Bear Cabin. The cabin more than met our expectations! We have three teenage daughters who fell in love with the cabin from the moment we stepped inside. The furniture, decorations and overall design of the cabin is perfect! We fixed several meals at the cabin. We were able to find everything we needed to prepare each meal. Never felt like we were missing any essentials!

The hidden windows, scavenger hunt, games and foosball table were an added treat to our stay. We had a mini foosball tournament each night. Many laughs and some great memories made!

Thank you for sharing your cabin! We had a fabulous time!!

Beautiful Cabin in the Woods

  • 4 of 5

Hidden Bear Cabin was beautiful. It's owners obviously put a lot of thought and pride into building and decorating it. The cabin was immaculately clean. We loved the Christian sayings and crosses scattered here and there. We were grateful for the toys provided. Almost everything was provided. We would absolutely recommend Hidden Bear for couples looking for a private escape and retreat.

There were a couple things that we wished could have been different that would have made our stay even more pleasant. We stayed with our three young children and extended family (Grandma). We quickly discovered there are no locks on any of the interior doors including the bathroom. The loft's bathroom actually did not have a true door at all. It has salon doors. The loft area overlooks the entire dining room and kitchen. This caused a major privacy issue for our family.

We also found that while the two actual beds and the futon were comfortable, the family room pull out sofa bed was in need of repair. We had no choice but to use it even though the lower left corner was completely broken which made the mattress sag and the air mattress top would not hold air for more than a couple hours. This made our son's nights very uncomfortable and it caused our stay to have several rough nights.

There was a terrific storm on the last night of our stay. Trees went down and power was lost to most of Egg Harbor, if not the entire peninsula, from about 9:15pm- 5am the next morning. We were immensely grateful for the working lanterns we found even though the flashlight did not have working batteries.

We also discovered that none of us had any cell phone reception until we drove out onto the main road. There was working wifi when the cabin had electricity but we felt no working cell service was a huge safety concern. When the power went out we had zero connection to the outside world.

Do be aware that prior to check out, guests do need to strip bed linens and start a load of towels. As parents we had hoped to escape extra chores on vacation and were surprised by this.

We would have loved to use the outdoor amenities the cabin provided. They offered a fire pit, grill, hammock and picnic table and the scenery was gorgeous. Unfortunately, at the time of our stay Door County was experiencing a huge mosquito apocalypse. They swarmed us even with repellant. So, we ran from the cabin door to the cars for each trip and never were able to experience the cabin's lovely setting.

Amazing Art cabin!

  • 5 of 5

I don't know if we've ever seen so perfectly-realized a property! Wonderful construction, gorgeous setting, fantastically equipped, and so full of whimsical details. Lots of games, a beautiful fireplace, a lovely, snug little kitchen (with every possible need anticipated), comfy beds, great fire pit outside with a supply of firewood. On and on! We were maybe more in awe of the property than anything else over our few days in the Door! (One caveat: the religious decor is a bit much for a public space. But it's my only complaint.)
