Located in the beautiful Tarryall Valley with scenic historic preservation sites along the winding picturesque byway, Lazy River Ranch is a working hay and cattle ranch. It is also a well-stocked premier fly-fishing paradise. The RMAC leases the river from the owner. If you wish to fish, arrangements can be made at the time of booking for day passes. Passes cost $35/per person per day. If your group is more than 4 or you wish to play in the river and tube the block of the river is $140/day. 24' rainbow trout are not uncommon nor is the sighting of large elk, deer and big horn sheep. The elk and deer come down to the river in late evening or early morning to drink. A skillful hunter will even see wild turkey and sage grouse. At 8,800 to 9,000', the 160 acre ranch backs to the Lost Creek Wilderness and offers spectacular views from hiking trails that can take you up to 12,000' in elevation. The ranch house - completed in 2008 - is beloved by the owners for its location and beauty.
The river is strictly fly fishing, catch and release (additional fee passes required) on 1¼ miles of stream bordered by some willows winding through irrigated hay meadows in a gently rolling valley bottom. You will hear coyotes and owls at night as you star gaze at a sky where you will clearly see the Milky Way and more stars than you knew existed. There is an outdoor fireplace to keep you warm and for roasting marshmallows. After just a day or two you will feel like you have finally gotten that long-needed rest. As your cares melt away you will see the world in a whole new light - come visit and discover!
It's an easy 85 mile drive South West of Denver or 60 miles North West of Colorado Springs. Ask for directions when you make your reservation.
The owner is a geologist who enjoys all the rock formations in the area. The ranch was purchased as a retreat from a work life of international travel and long hours. It has been a life saver. The picture, taken circa 2007 is of owner's daughter and friend.
Kaitrin purchased this house in 1982
We bought property in this location because it is close enough to Denver to go for a short weekend and yet it is secluded enough that you really feel you have gotten away. It is a wonderful site for family reunions, weddings and small company retreats.
We have always enjoyed the fishing and hunting - both are first class. We have gone many years without buying beef. Our children have enjoyed years of fun in the outdoors with their friends. We used to give them each a dollar and they would walk a mile or so to the country store to buy candy. That kept them busy and out of our hair! They also spent hours playing in the river. Now they come and bring their children and teach them the same love of the outdoors that they have.
We LOVED it. The house was so clean and well appointed - we spent pretty much all our time there. So warm and cozy, and the view was outstanding. The water was running a little high and fast for catching, but we fished nonetheless. And the weather was totally freaky, but that was great too. MY whole goal for the vacation was to just sit and watch the weather, and Colorado did not disappoint. I can't wait to come back! Truly one of the most beautiful properties we've rented.
Couldn't imagine spending our honeymoon anywhere else. The home is beautifully appointed and has a ton of space - with all the bells and whistles you could ever want. The location is breathtaking - especially hiking through the mountains of Pike National Forest. Untouched and simply perfect.
We saw mule deer and even a bull elk right by the property! Neighbors baling hay and anglers fished - we enjoyed spending time with them and also caught a huge rainbow trout! Hoping to see the Aspens at their peak but caught it a tad early. We still saw our share of golden color and mountainscapes that are hard to put into words. God's country for sure.
First time on vacation we never left the property-tells you how much it has to offer. Definitely will come back again and hope to draw elk tags so we can be here for the elk hunting season. Thank you again for making such a wonderful memory for us - we'll be back!!!!
What a wonderful place to disconnect from the world and spend time walking, fishing, visiting, and exploring. The house is very comfortable with oodles of space. We loved looking out the windows on the cool mornings, and sitting on the screen porch watching the hummingbirds and evening rabbits. The views are extraordinary. A truly special place!
The pictures didn't do it justice. A postcard view of the valley and the house was perfect. We couldn't have had a more relaxing and enjoyable time. The perfect place to get away with my girls and their families. We look forward to staying again.
The Lazy River Ranch is a great place to disconnect from the internet and relax the old fashioned way. We love the peace and quiet, clean air, and gorgeous scenery.
We just finished our second visit and are looking forward to our third in a couple of weeks. We have used it as a convenient way to get together with friends and family, prepare and share meals together, play games, hike, read books, and relax. The house has all the comforts of home in a quiet setting. It is an easy place for us to entertain more people than we can accommodate at our house in Denver. It is a great place for family reunions. We hope to return often and in all seasons.
This was our second visit to Lazy River Ranch and we intend to return. The house has plenty of room with an excellent open kitchen/dining/living room on the main floor. Make sure to fill the hummingbird feeder, hours of enjoyment can be had relaxing on the porch watching them and soaking up the view of the surroundings. Plan accordingly for being disconnected (no cell/internet/wifi/TV signals) and focus on where you are instead of staring at a screen attempting to determine what is happening somewhere else. There are DVD players and a decent movie library for any down time. Kaitrin is great to work with; I highly recommend the property to anyone looking to "get away" in the mountains.
The lazy river ranch is a great place to disconnect from the hurried, frenzied city life. I was glad to be without Internet access but my husband was not. This was probably one of the few times we have been disconnected from the Internet. The home was beautiful and the surrounding scenery was gorgeous. New took little side trips to explore Colorado and it was a bit far from many places but the drive to and from was fantastic. The house was situated on beautiful property. It was very lush and rustic. Only drawback, which is no fault of the owner, was the dreaded mosquitos. Even these were not as bad as the Texas ones. Would go back for a relaxing vacation.
The property backs up to wilderness and national forest. Tarryall Reservoir is a 5 minute drive away and 11 Mile and Spinney Reservoirs' are close by. Fairplay and its restaurants and old historic town is about a 45 min drive, Cave of the Winds near Colo Springs, Buena Vista and nearby hot springs.
