The Gage/Murphy Mansion is a crown jewel from the early days of Prescott and located just 2 blocks away from Courthouse Square and Whiskey Row. Originally constructed in 1895 as the family home of business tycoon E.B. Gage, and later railroad tycoon Frank M. Murphy, this restored monument of local history has been just steps away from the heart of Prescott for over 125 years.
The space:
The entire home is 7274 sq ft with a total of 10 units spread out amongst 3 floors and a basement, each unique to one another in size, layout, and design – come back and stay at them all for a different experience each time! You will not find another gem like this in all of Prescott.
Unit 2B - “The Murphy Suite” is on the basement level and is approx. 850 sq ft with 2 beds/1 bath. The space has 1 large bedroom with a queen size bed and 42” TV, 1 small bedroom with a twin daybed and 32” TV, a sitting area, dining room, bathroom with a stand-up shower, and a full kitchen for your use and enjoyment. The unit’s ambience reflects the time of the Industrial Revolution in America during the 1800s, when many important inventions came to fruition. You'll find that the decor is industrial/steampunk and it is named the "Murphy Suite" as a tribute to this monumental time. The Edison bulbs throughout only add to this atmosphere!
**The basement units are our most unique units as you can see from the pictures. They are a bit darker and cooler than the main floor units and have a basement feel to them. 2B has mostly stone for walls and there are exposed pipes along the walls and ceilings that you can sometimes hear water flowing through. You’ll likely hear some footsteps from guests staying above you as well as the occasional humming of a portable AC unit. We’ve had past guests that have considered this room their favorite and loved the “cool” factor of it, and we’ve had others that felt it had more of a “spooky” vibe and didn’t feel the same. We think it’s an amazing one-of-a-kind space but at the end of the day it’s about guest preference and we understand that everyone’s tastes are different. Please review the pictures of the room and we’d be more than happy to answer any additional questions you have before booking as there will be no refunds for cancelled reservations.
Guest access:
The building itself has two main entrances. One is through the front door of the home which can be accessed from the front porch on the north side of the house that faces Gurley St. The other is located through the Mansion’s side door on the West side of the building, which you can see from S Alarcon St. The side door is closer to the parking, but the main entrance is a bit more “grand” – feel free to use either.
Unit 2B has a private entrance accessible from the outside of the home. Facing the Mansion from S Alarcon St, enter the sidewalk gate and head up the walkway towards the home. Turn right at the end of the walkway, then down the stairs to the left, and you’ll see the door to “The Murphy Suite”. The stairs can be a little dark at night and there’s an immediate drop off when you first enter the room so please watch your steps.
Other things to note:
Please respect and take care of the home during your stay. Much of it is original and cannot be replaced.
As much of it is original please expect some creaking floors and other noises and sights that come with a home that’s well over 100 years old. We think it adds to the appeal! But not everyone may think the same way so, just a heads up 😊.
Parking is first come first serve and is limited to 1 vehicle per unit. There is an upper level parking lot accessed via the private road immediately to the south of the building, and a smaller lower level parking lot on the same level as the building. Street parking is also available.
The location is amazing - just 2 short blocks from the square! However, like any other hotels or stays that are near a city center there may be some noise (mostly passing traffic) to deal with. The south side and lower floor rooms (1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 2B) are quieter. And the ones closest to Gurley St (4, 7, 1B) are slightly noisier. Some guests notice it, others don’t, but we thought it deserved at least a mention to consider when booking.
All rooms have at least 1 portable A/C unit for those summer months when it can get a little warm. The larger units have 2 in them. There are fans in each room as well. For the winter months there is a boiler system that generates heat for the house and all rooms.
All TV’s are subscribed to Hulu Live TV which includes 75+ channels and all Hulu content. Other streaming apps are installed but depending on the service you may need to login to them using your own account info to access content. Please log out of them before leaving to prevent the use of your account by others.
All guests have access to the common areas of the home as well as the outside common areas. While you are free to explore the inside of the Mansion please be considerate of other guests that may be staying and do your best not to disturb them, including keeping noise down to a reasonable level.
There is a shared laundry room on the south side of the building. Laundry supplies are not provided but there are 2 washers and 2 dryers available for use if you provide your own.
A commercial water softener is connected to the house. Its still not advisable to drink directly from the faucet but the showers and linens should feel nice! Enjoy!
Please read the Guest book in the unit for more details on the Mansion, it’s unique history, important house rules, and other useful info.
We want you to have the most comfortable and enjoyable stay possible, so if there’s anything we can do to make your stay better please just let us know!

The Murphy suite is very rustic but the stone foundation is very cool. It is very clean and comfortable. Also very close to whiskey row and restaurants. Great location!
Modern living in an historic space. Satisfied all our needs. Walking distance to Whiskey Row and a short drive to Lake Watson for kayaking. We would stay again!
Mansion was amazing! Our unit 2B was awesome! Historic house and area! Highly recommend staying here! Walking distance to Whiskey Row and old downtown!
A unique and great stay in Prescott! The basement quarters were definitely private, with an external door for access. The only warning is that the houses water/sewer lines pass directly through the seating/small bedroom and are notable if you are sensitive to sound, although it was not a bother to us. The unit was very clean and we quite enjoyed our stay!
We stayed in the Murphy Suite at the Mansion and it was just as advertised. I thought it was really quaint. The only negative was the upstairs residents taking showers at 6:20 am, which you can hear as the water rushes through the pipes in the small bedroom (but this was ALL disclosed on the details of the room, so I was not upset by it). This is a perfect location to experience Prescott and the grounds are beautiful. Highly recommend this location for your Prescott stay.
This was a nice stay. Its location is perfect, close enough to walk into whiskey row and core town square area but far enough away not to suffer that noise. The bed was crazy cozy. The property has multiple units which sometimes reduces the privacy you feel, but at this location I felt live I was the only one there. very cool
Very clean unit with plenty of space for 3 adults to cook/eat and relax in living room and bedrooms. The unit has a lot of character with the exposed stone walls since it is the “basement” of the mansion. We heard guests in their rooms around us and the sound of water moving through the pipes. Neither of these sounds were loud enough to disturb us. I would stay here again.
We needed to get AWAY for a few days. The Murphy suite was perfect. Enough room, comfy bed, a sitting area for reading, close to whiskey row, functional kitchen. Exactly what we needed. We were vaguely aware of other guests but noise was never a problem. Parking was always available off the street. Melanie was immediately available for the one issue we had and it was fixed immediately. We would definitely come back!
The host was nice and responsive but the heat from the radiant pipes made it unbearable at night - the colder it got outside the hotter it was in the basement suite - the old house is heated with boiler system and the exposed pipes made it a sauna
Thanks for letting us rent your apartment. We had a very nice time. What a creative use of that space! It was quite comfortable and had everything we needed.
