Welcome to the cozy, wonderful Cottage of River Winds, a unique and wonderful all-heart redwood cottage designed by early California architect Julia Morgan! This 103-year-old cottage is the heart of our family's memories for 3 generations--and soon to be yours, too. Step back in time in this wonderfully preserved, immaculate home, truly a historic gem of old Carmel. Open beams, all-heart redwood walls, many original features, a stone fireplace, large sunny patio, antique furniture and original oil paintings of the area.
We are happy to share this family treasure with you. Our cottage stands amid a large garden on Carmel Point, just two blocks from Carmel Beach and three from Carmel River Beach. It is close to everything--just one mile to Carmel Village, about 1/2 mile to the Carmel Mission, and easy access to Hwy 1.
We have 3 bedrooms: 2 with queen beds that share a full bath (tub/shower) down a small hallway. The third bedroom is quite small and has 1 full bed with private access to a tiny full bathroom (with shower) in the main part of the house.
Fully supplied kitchen; all linens provided; cable TV, DVD player, iPod player, secure wireless internet, and everything you need for a comfortable stay.
We mostly rent by week or month; shorter stays in wintertime. If the simple peacefulness of bygone times speaks to your heart, you will fall in love with the Cottage of River Winds.

About Krys Holmes
Our great-aunt Etta (in the blue dress) settled here at the Cottage with her friend, Kelly, after World War I. They ran the Cottage of River Winds as a Bed & Breakfast for many years, through many days of hard work and grace. The Cottage has been in our family for 3 generations. Our parents loved and cared for this beautiful property until their deaths a few years ago, when my brothers and I took over. We try to take care of it in the way that Etta would do, providing peaceful simplicity in an atmosphere of beauty at 'the greatest meeting of land and sea.'
Krys Holmes purchased this House in 1919
Why Krys Holmes chose Carmel Point
The Cottage of River Winds is our family's treasure. We were blessed to enjoy many of our best family memories here while growing up, and we enjoy sharing this remarkable, unique place with others who seek a simple, peaceful experience like this.
What makes this House unique
The Cottage of River Winds lets you step back in time to a simpler day when the beauty of a garden, the whisper of rainfall on the roof, the peacefulness of a cup of tea in the morning sun, enrich your soul and feed your heart.

Historical gem in a little slice of paradise!
My husband and I along with our 3yo son had a wonderful Spring Break week in Carmel staying at River Winds. What a lovely home in a fantastic location! I grew up on Cape Cod and this place brought back fond memories of my grandmother's house on the beach. All the amenities you need to be away with a toddler (wife, laundry, 2 bathrooms and a tub, linen closet with enough towels) and a well-stocked kitchen with everything necessary to prepare meals (although you may want to bring spices besides salt & pepper). The location can't be beat - close enough for a healthy stroll into town (for little ones definitely use the stroller) and the beaches, beaches, beaches! We spent equal time walking to the very nearby beaches or exploring further points like Point Lobos, Big Sur and the state parks, Monterey Aquarium etc. The highlight for my son was definitely Carmel River State Beach, exploring the shallow waters, hunting for bugs and frogs in the reeds and running in the sheltered dunes. It's all stunning and relaxing and just exactly where you want to be to spend your week de-stressing and chilling out. One night it poured rain and us Angelenos LOVED hearing the rain on the roof and the crash of the waves in the distance. Fantastic stay and so well-preserved. I love that this family is trusting enough to share this architecturally and historically significant cottage with the rest of us. We will definitely be back!
Lovely Cottage, Exceeded Expectations!
Even more spacious and light-filled than anticipated based on the photos and square footage. Lots of big windows on three sides in the large living area, all with beautiful views of the truly amazing garden. The two queen bedrooms (on the east side of the central foyer) are very roomy, have big windows out to the garden, and share a convenient hall bath. The third bedroom (on the west side of the foyer, near the kitchen, with windows to the backyard where there is a gas grill -- has the blue comforter in the online photos) has a slightly smaller (double not queen) bed and is tighter quarters, but is very desirable as well since it is (we all thought) the prettiest bedroom and has an attached bath. The LR furniture has been rearranged/updated vs. the current VRBO online photo, and has a very comfortable seating area with two chairs & the sofa grouped around a coffee table. The kitchen is well-stocked with pots/utensils/appliances and was nice to have as an option for some meals, since restaurants in Carmel are quite pricey. Plenty of extra towels/blankets and some nice "hotel-like" housekeeping touches (for example, a "fan" fold on the end of the tissue). The neighborhood is quiet; we could hear the ocean. The location is excellent -- just a quick (two block) walk to the beach. Although town is only several blocks away, we typically drove there, since we'd do enough walking while in town. Drives along the coast (Point Lobos & Big Sur) were spectacular. We appreciated the historic character and charm of the Cottage of River Winds, and the owner Krys and caretaker Doug were easy to reach and responsive to questions via text/email. -- Page & Chris (our family of four stayed a week in April 2018)
Page and Chris,
Thank you so much! You were lovely guests, and we hope you can come back soon. Thanks for taking such great care of our historic treasure.
Incredible pleasure- enjoying rustic Old Carmel in today's modern world
This diligently maintained and rustic 100 year old Carmel cottage is a delightful and rare find! Wrapped around a generous and well kept garden, the rambling structure is nestled back on the property so as to provide plenty of privacy and intimate garden views. Though in the heart of a neighborhood (on the corner however!) the main outlooks are toward live oaks and charming shingled roofs. The main room is extremely comfortable with good furniture, responsive heat (it was cold while we were here), has a new TV, great internet, but still retains the old stone fireplace, original natural wood walls, and warm lamp-lighting.
Cooks beware- though not a "cook's kitchen"- as avid cooks, we managed to find what we needed and were thankful for the modern and newish appliances. Of the three bedrooms, we chose the "garden" side bedroom which we found snug and serene. The house is really just blocks away from the sea in several directions and also within walking distance to town, Carmel Mission Ranch, and other destinations. We value charm, beauty, history, location, and comfort. We found those here.
"A delightful and rare find" -- we like that! And we love our guests who really value beauty, charm, and historic authenticity--with the up-to-date necessities of course!
Great spacious Carmel cottage
We stayed for 8 days and loved the cottage, great location to relax, sightsee, walk to beach or downtown. Pretty gardens!!!
Outstanding, historic vacation cottage on Carmel Point!
This historic 3BR cottage on Carmel Point is truly a gem! Great, expansive windows provide a bright, cheerful ambiance during the day. The terraced landscape provides many opportunities to sit and reflect or to stroll around the surrounding gardens. Everything "works"! Easy walk to the beach and Scenic drive. Owner Krys Holmes was flexible and easy to work with. We will definitely return...

Charming older home near beach
These are some of our favorite returning guests. And by "older home," he means it's a historic treasure, lovingly maintained and polished up weekly. All-heart redwood, large picture windows, the simple elegance of a bygone era. Thanks for writing a review, Bill!
