Overview

About the property

Ranch House, 5 Bedrooms, 1.25 Baths, (Sleeps up to 8 but extra fee for over 6)

You will feel like you own your own ranch in the heart of the Old West

Water, water, water, every where water. Our Creek is Spring fed and our well abundant. Take long showers and enjoy the abundance of super clean, clear water.

This rental is a beautiful, unique and limited opportunity. Only one family or group will be able to take advantage of this offer at a time. It is like a Guest Ranch, but you have the place to yourself with solitude and privacy in a beautiful natural setting. Photographs just can not do it justice. There are spectacular views in all directions.

The ranch is in the heart of the Old West with numerous rivers and lakes nearby. It is 10 minutes North of downtown Mt. Shasta and 25 minutes South of Yreka. The McCloud River:45 minutes, The Upper Sacramento: 15 minutes, The Klamath (45 min.), the Trinity River (45 min.),the Pit River and Hat Creek (about one hour). Our on-site ponds abound in trophy size trout. A gin-clear, spring creek, full of trout, runs for 1 3/4 miles through the property. If you ever dreamed of helping your child catch a trout, this is the place to make real, that fantasy! The fishing is unsurpassed. To protect and preserve the Trout, only Barbless Flys are allowed in the ponds. It's a Catch and Release venue.

While extremely private, the ranch is less than five minutes from the city of Weed and 10 minutes from Mount Shasta City. Interstate 5 is 5 minutes away and the Weed airport is 10 minutes away.

If you want a secluded, and beautiful home base from which to explore Northern California and Southern Oregon this is an excellent venue.

The house lies at the end of a mile long, unpaved private country road. This secluded mountain valley provides spectacular 360 degree views. I often sit outside with a cup of tea or a cold drink and watch the views and wildlife as time seems to stand still. If you are an artist or bird watcher you will be captivated. The lighting is fantastic.

A small horse and cattle operation is run by two local cowboys who are also officers of the law in town. Their occasional presence on the range will help guard your privacy and will add a layer of security. Bill and Tim (policeman and Sheriff respectively) know the area well and can provide excellent information about the regions extensive recreational opportunities.

There is one main bathroom and an extra toilet in the laundry room area.

With all of the water around, it is amazing that there are no Mosquitoes or other biting insects to speak of. Having stayed at places where bug spray was a necessity, I believe this is a issue every vacationer should look into before committing to a rental property.

there is NO WiFi but cell phone reception is excellent for all Smart Phones and Tablets etc.

About Bill Broadhead

To own a trout fishing property has always been my dream. I never expected to find such a perfect location. I am an engineering consultant and expert witness. The Residual job stress melts away with each day at the ranch. While I have traveled the world, no place is more relaxing than a stay here at the ranch. I am married with three kids. My family loves our ranch vacations. We live in Southern California in the mountains above Santa Barbara. In the winters we come to the ranch to ski and board at Mount Shasta Ski Park, less than 30 minutes away.

Bill Broadhead purchased this house in 1997

Why Bill Broadhead chose Shasta Cascade

Siskiyou county is at the heart of one of the best fishing, hiking and biking areas in the world. The air is clean and the sky blue. This area still holds the flavor or the Old American West. The small town honesty and hospitality are reminiscent of the values upon which the country was founded. If you want to get away from the stress of everyday life this is the place.

What makes this house unique

Seclusion and solitude prevail in a natural setting with the convenience of a town and Interstate freeway nearby. Crater Lake, Lava Beds National Monument and numerous other natural wonders make convenient day trips. This ranch is perfect for the family that loves the natural outdoors but wants to sleep comfortably indoors. Nearby museums and antique stores reflect the mystique of our American frontier days. The nearby town of Weed was established as a logging town. Other nearby towns sprang up with the great California gold rush.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Eileen had a sharp eye and provided an abundance of useful feedback. If you care about giving your guests a quality experience you will enjoy her constructive criticism.

I should have given her 5 stars

Wonderful family exploration!

  • 5 of 5

My family of four (2 adults, 2 kids 10 and 9) joined my brothers family of four (2 adults, 2 kids 6 and 4) for a week in Mount Shasta! Bill's place had everything we needed and more. We loved waking up to the cows and watching them eat and feed their young. Bill's ranch was a perfect hub for our adventures - from Deadfall's Lake to the McCloud Falls, we hit every exploration we had hoped to see and really enjoyed our time in the area. The house is fully stocked with everything you need - from dishes to knives to toilet paper! We dined at the house 4 of our 6 nights and were able to grill, cook on the stove, and use the oven with ease. The house was spacious and we really enjoyed dining on the front yard each night, with a view of Shasta in the earlier part of the evening and the stars at the end! The kids played hard in the yard and Tim was wonderful and patient with all our questions about the area and the kids questions about the cows and the horses. He really made the stay complete!!! Thank you, Tim!!

Some additional thoughts:

- The cell reception was great but we had to connect to the internet via our own plans. Excellent reason to disconnect and was happy to be away from the world but it made planning events and finding locations a bit difficult. We were all torn on the availability of the internet but were able to figure out everything we needed.

- Dog owners beware of the barbed wire fencing! My brother's city dog sliced her ear into three parts on the first night. She's a great dog and very well behaved but got too excited for a rabbit chase. If you, too, find yourself in need of pet care, note that Mt Shasta Animal Hospital does great work on sliced ears, and other emergencies! Agnus is as good as new!

- Bill describes all the area has to offer perfectly and we definitely took advantage of all his recommendations, as well as Tim and Bill's. There is extra driving involved and my advice is to be ready for all the driving. His place is perfect for that!

- We did not fish while on the ranch. My brother bought his gear on our hikes and gave that a go but didn't do any fishing on the property. The kids kayaked in the lower pond and that was a huge hit!

- The horses on the ranch are very friendly and the kids loved giving them attention. Like I said before, Tim was a saint and so patient and helpful when my daughters went running out with questions for him as soon as he arrived on site.

Gorgeous views, rustic home, rural/ranch setting

  • 5 of 5

This is a cute little, old house in a rural/ranch setting. Huge property with two fishing ponds, one small and one large. Lovely owner, Bill, was in contact via text messages. He was very attentive and responsive to our many questions. Thanks, Bill! Property manager, Tim, was very nice too but we hardly saw him.

Enjoyed the red kayak for the big pond. Didn't catch any fish, which was a bit sad but oh well. It happens. It was very hot when we visited so maybe the fish were hiding. FYI, this is a strictly catch and release property! Note that this is also a rustic setting with a mile-long dirt driveway so leave your fancy stuff at home! Bring jeans and boots, fly fishing gear, and your own food. Kitchen was well-stocked with pots, pans, plates, utensils, and mugs. Prior tenants tried their best but left food on the counter, washboard, and plates so ants were an issue our first two days. Just keep it really clean and if you don't leave a crumb, they go elsewhere. Don't use the ant spray and poison yourselves! The house is old and in the countryside so I think ants are normal. Also, bring bug spray as other insects are to be expected as well. Oh! Our first night a little frog hopped out of a bedroom and into the living room. Ha ha. He was cute. We rescued him and let him loose in the water outside.

Linens were a bit old but they sufficed. Washer and dryer were brand new and worked well. All kitchen appliances were fine too! Swamp cooler unit helped in the withering heat. It's not full AC but it helped for sure. Only wish list item would be a dishwasher but it's country living!

There is a fire pit--but it was hot and dry weather so we didn't want to risk trying it. A fire would definitely be fun in cooler (and safer) weather. Bill also provides a hammock but we were too busy fishing, napping, or exploring the area.

Overall, a good stay. Best part though was Bill, the nicest property owner ever!

Owner's Response: These guests were great. I couldn't get the house cleaning service booked so the guest cleaned the house herself and I waived the cleaning fee.

Perfect for multi-generational family vacations

  • 5 of 5

The farmhouse and ranch were a perfect match for my family's rendez-vous for a mini-vacation. There was plenty of space inside for our multi-generational family to spread out, and plenty of space outside to keep the grandchildren happy and excited about exploring the property. The wood burning stove was welcoming and lent a rustic air to our stay. A fabulous snow sledding hill was in close proximity to the property, and everyone had a great adventure racing down it. We are planning on returning in the summer to take advantage of the trout ponds and creeks. We couldn't be more happy with our choice of this property for vacation.
