Solid albeit unspectacular...with some small changes, could be great!

  • 3 of 5

Owner was a little slow on responding to emails from time to time during the set up phase / locking down dates, but we connected eventually and worked things out. The house is very nice inside, with a small but well appointed kitchen and a nice eating area near the fireplace. The bedrooms were all nice sized and had comfortable beds, but we walked into a place that was half cleaned with some trash still in the yard / deck area and kids toys in the window wells obscuring view from the lower level. Also, sheets were left on chairs or the floor next to the beds to be made by us when we walked in. It sounds silly, but for the money we paid to expect clean sheets on the beds I don't think is too much to ask. The basement big screen / projector TV did not work. We wanted to watch the Bears game there, but when we realized that it wasn't hooked up (screen not aligned, projector not able to find a direct TV box, etc.) we quickly gave up and went to a local bar. A simple letter of instruction on how to dial things in that outlines which controller does what would be a great solution. I'm a AV tech geek too, but didn't have it in me on my vacation to fight with a spaghetti of cords and multiple remotes.

The deck is great, and we used the fire pit most every night just off the back of the house. The owner has cords of wood waiting for you, which was nice, and the gas powered flame on the deck worked the time or two we used it in the evenings. There is no third fire pit, contrary to the listing, on the beach.

And that's where things go a bit sideways. We booked wanting to spend some time on the beach. Doing that was neigh impossible. 1) The stairs are as crazy steep (steeper than 45 degrees) as everyone says and they're LONG and covered in the surrounding brush. I'm in great shape and had no problem with them, but if you're older or have small children, it's a risk. 30 minutes with a scythe to cut away the intrusive brush would make going up and down them immensely easier. 2) When you get to the bottom, the stairs stop 15 feet from the beach. I'm not joking. You have to climb a jury-rigged tree ladder at the base of the stairs to get down to the sand. 3) The beach itself had about 8-15 feet of sand before the water. There was no place to sit or unwind, and certainly no fire pit.

Overall, any vacation is what you make it. We had a great time overall, but sometimes did it in spite of the accommodations.

Would've given 5 stars if beach was accessible.

  • 4 of 5

The house was very nice and clean. Great for a group of 10 with two full mattresses, one queen, and two kings. Fold-out couch was pretty terrible, but there is plenty of room for air mattresses. The basement has a sauna, though the shower next to it has very low pressure. The master shower made up for it though with a great view of the lake. The projector in the basement was broken, unfortunately, as were the speakers on the main floor. There is a big backyard with lots of space and a nice fire pit with lots of wood.

The biggest bummer, and the reason that I didn't give it 5 stars is because the beach was inaccessible (as of 8/4/2017). The Lake Michigan water level has risen enough that bottom of the stairs (of which there are about 150 steps total to the bottom) to the beach are gone. The view from the house remains beautiful, but there is no beach, even if you could get down to the water.

Communication with owner was easy and the house being off of a low traffic road was nice.

Overall very enjoyable stay.

Great house, a couple of snags

  • 4 of 5

The house was amazing. Beautiful, wonderful sauna, great beds, lots of space inside and outside.

Unfortunately, while we were there, the wifi wasn't functional. Also, at the bottom of the stairs down to the beach, the stairs had been damaged. So, to safely get down to the beach we had to heft, heave, and more the last section of stairs back into it's right place. We're fit an limber young folks, so it wasn't a problem, but this may be problematic for future guests if the stairs fall apart again.

Awesome!

  • 5 of 5

The house was awesome. Plenty of space to accommodate large families. It was clean and well kept and had all of the necessary items needed to make meals at home.

The large yard and outdoor space overlooking the lake was perfect. Gorgeous views. The stairs leading down to the "beach" were very steep. Would not recommend them for kids. The house is not far from Rocky Gap beach, Jean Klock park or Silver Beach--so not having access to the beach at the house isn't a reason not to stay there. It's off of the road which makes it very quiet, comfortable and relaxing. A 5-10 minute car ride to downtown St. Joe.

The one negative was the inability to access the wifi during our stay. Cell service can be spotty--so accessing wifi would have been helpful.

Would highly recommend and will definitely stay there again when the time comes!

Would recommend to EVERYONE

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had our wedding here over Memorial Day weekend. It was easily the most beautiful wedding we had ever been to (most of our guests also said so). The owners were very understanding and accommodating, they even called MISS dig for us so we could set up an even tent in the yard!

The view of the lake is stunning and the house is gorgeous. The stairs down to the water is a little bit of a different story... They seem to be structurally sound but they do sway and are so steep they become more a ladder than a stair case. So keep that in mind.

Even the neighbors were so wonderful and understanding of our wedding band (which we had stop around midnight).

My husband and I plan on renting this house again and again for big anniversaries!
