About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

All rates inclusive of NC sales tax and cleaning fees. No hidden cost.

The “BIG HOUSE” as we refer to it, is located on the Island of Hatteras, in the remote Outer Banks coastal region of North Carolina. Perfect stay for the Layed Back Vacationer, Couples traveling alone or with friends and small families. Truely quaint and peaceful.

Nestled in the historic village of Kinnakeet, this owner managed home, among its’ unusual setting of flower beds, veggie gardens, bird feeders and great collection of eclectic yard art, offers a true escape.

Don’t let the quirky character or the GREAT PRICE fool you, the Big House has every modern amenity. Three large bedrooms, full kitchen, two full baths and private outdoor shower with views of its' own, will ensure you have a comfortable stay. For amazing views and memorable sunsets, step out onto the top deck that overlooks acres of undeveloped marsh land and the Pamlico Sound. We have a sunning deck and for escaping with a summer read, retreat to the deck nestled among the tree tops of our live oaks. In the heat of the day relax on the lower screened-in porch, in a hammock built for two.

For venturing out enjoy the use of our beach cruiser bicycles for a walk on the Avon Pier or the island’s beautiful Atlantic beaches. Walk or ride to a variety of local restaurants and shops. Really feeling adventurous, visit the historic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, take a (free) ferry boat to Ocracoke Island or give some of the areas water sports a try.

Good time!

  • 4 of 5

The house is beautifully decorated! It was very clean and the kitchen was well stocked! We were able to watch beautiful sunsets in the evenings! It was great to be able to use the beach chairs and the bikes.

Two things we weren't fond of was the bed in the master bedroom was really stiff. And the bedroom on the third floor has a beautiful and big window that has no blinds on it! It got hot in it quickly and you are waking up with the sun! My teen who slept in it really liked the room and bed though. That one was comfy!

Fantastic house with great views!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the big house for a week. We loved our stay & wished it could have been longer. We really liked all the beautiful art work & antiques, this house is full of whimsy. The location is great near everything. We got to meet John the owner, very nice guy! There.are great views from the house. The flowers & herbs on the walk way to the house are a nice touch. The kitchen has just about everything you would need for a great meal. The bedrooms are a good size with the exception of the lower level bedroom, it has a full bed but has its on bathroom. The house has 3 levels. We loved it & hope we can come back someday.

Great Kiting Vacation

  • 5 of 5

A friend and I spent two weeks in the Big House, kiting, and relaxing. This house is set away from the main road, with a unobstructed view of the sound. It is very quite, and has all the amenities you need. The path leading up to the house has fresh herbs growing, and a fire pit for bonfires. We kited all over, but for about 4 or 5 days we kited the beach in front of the house. While there is no direct access to the beach we walked down to the house right on the beach, and each time there were other kiters/wind surfers staying there, and they let us launch and kite no problem.

We would definitely come back.

PS. Good luck figuring out the light switches in this house :-). The electrician that wired it, must have been a mad genius or an idiot savant.

What a FUN house!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in "The Big House" for a family reunion; my wife and I, and our 2 daughters and sons-in-law. We had a great time. We all really loved the house, and especially enjoyed the "scenic" walk from the driveway. Every time we made that walk, we discovered something new! We also loved having our own "disco", by turning off all the lights, except the ones on the disco balls! Love the screened in porch with the hammock and the swing; there was always a nice breeze there. View from the upper balcony overlooking the sound is spectacular, especially at sunset. We had a great time exploring the Outer Banks, as well. Following are must do's (In no particular order):

Get an ugly at the Orange Blossom Cafe in Buxton

Take an nap in the hammock in the screened in porch

Have dinner at Cafe Pamlico (at the Inn) in Buxton

Go kayaking/SUP/sailing/wave running at Hatteras Watersports in Salvo (so much cheaper than anywhere else, and a nice property on the sound)

Play golf at Nags Head Golf Links (Bring plenty of golf balls!)

Use the supplied beach umbrella/beach chairs early and often (at the beach!)

Have dinner while watching the sunset from the upper balcony

Take the ferry and spend a day on Ocracoke.

Tour a lighthouse (the one in Buxton is the tallest; it's like walking up 12 stories)

Eat at Rustys in Buxton

Eat at Ketch 55 in Avon

Get a pizza from Gidgets in Avon

Get ice cream at Cup and Cone in Avon (you can probably get one to share for two or three!)

Walk on the beach at night, and see LOTS of sand crabs and stars

And, if you get bored, try to figure out what the 40+ light switches in the main room do!

We love this house!

  • 5 of 5

We were here June 6, 14 and were in awe of how great this house is and for the price, it was perfect. It's fully stocked with about everything you need and close to everything. Very quiet and the owner was out of town when we were there, though we would have loved to have met him. The inside is very eclectic in decorum and the spider on the phone in the bathroom was a hoot. We were not bother by mosquitoes in the beginning but on our last night we noticed some, maybe at the time we were there they weren't out and about much yet?? The outside landscaping is interesting, loved the provided bikes and like another reviewer said, if it had a walkway to the sound it would have been perfect. Only issue we had was the satellite TV wasn't showing many channels, my husband likes watching the news and sports at night. Their are games in the living room under the fireplace, books in the loft and just tons of stuff to do. I definitely would love to go back to this house, I hated to leave! It's very clean and appears to be well cared for. We rented kayaks from Ride Hatteras and kayaked the sound a lot so a pathway to the sound would be great, if possible to do. Lots of light switches in the house made it interesting to see what switch worked what, lol. All in all, we loved the house, its a great price and I hope to talk the husband into going back in the fall and next June!

Great family vacation

  • 4 of 5

this was our first time renting a house here in NC. And it will be a hard one to beat. The house is just as it is pictured very clean and quiet. We loved the use of the bikes as we would bike to the beach. We just wished it had a walkway to the sound as we kite board so we had to always drive to the public beaches on the sound side to kite board as there is no access here even though you are really close to the sound waterfront.(needs a board walk.) I think this house is suited more to couples coming together we came with our two children 6 and 10 but they ended up sleeping in our room as there is a room on each floor and they were scared being that far away from us in a strange house. The downstairs room is nice as it has it's own bathroom but lots of wind noises so my daughter came to our room the first night and didn't want to sleep there again. the third floor room is great but would be perfect with a bunk bed in it as well. that way two family's could rent it and the kids could all sleep up there. It was a lovely house I just think more suited to the couples. Also the owner lives in the little cottage joined to the main house so if you want privacy it's not really that private. I read in one other review about the mosquitos yes they can be bad walking to the house from where you park the car. We would stay again if it has a board walk to the sound for water activities because it was a really clean and nice inside.
