Our home is fully equipped for the perfect vacation. We are a short walk to a white sandy beach via the neighborhood's private boardwalk system. Our beaches are never crowded! The Milliken House has a wrap-around front porch with rockers, a porch swing and hammock for visiting with friends and family. Our rear patio has an outdoor, private, enclosed hot/cold water shower, and a propane grill.

The first floor of our home offers an open floor plan with living, dining and kitchen areas, wood floors, nine foot ceilings, a half bath and a laundry closet with a full-sized washer and dryer. Our large gourmet kitchen has Corian countertops, a breakfast bar that seats four, maple glass-front cabinets, and a terra-cotta tile floor. The living area has a large-screen internet ready cable TV with DVD player and large supply of DVDs. The dining area features a beautiful, custom-made dining table and seats six. There is a portable phone on the first floor.

The second floor is carpeted with nine foot ceilings, and has two large bedrooms, each with a king sized bed. The master bedroom has a small private deck facing south toward the water, a work area with desk, telephone,a small flat screen internet ready cable TV with a DVD player, a walk-in closet, and a private bath with double sinks and a large tub and shower. The guest bedroom has a king sized bed, a comfortable wing backed arm chair, a full-sized crib complete with crib linens and a bumper in the alcove, a portable phone and a large closet. A second full bath, with tub and shower, is on the second floor in the hallway next to the guest bedroom.

The third floor, with pickled pine floors and nine foot dormer ceilings, is a large bunkroom with ocean views, two built-in twin daybeds under a row of west-facing windows, built-in bunk twin beds, and a futon couch that folds out into a double bed. This floor is set up for kids, with a small flat screen cable TV with DVD player, and lots of children's books, videos and toys. There's a large open area up here where the kids can spread out and play!

We use a linen service in Southport as part of our cleaning service. All bed linens are high quality and professionally laundered, and all bed pillows are down-filled (we have allergenic alternatives available). We also provide professionally laundered large bath towels. We have two newer four-seater Club Car golf carts for getting around the island. A membership in the Bald Head Island Club is included in the rental, and we can sponsor a membership in the Shoal's Club upon request for an additional fee.

About Nana Smith, Manager, Milliken Family Group LLC

My husband and I have been married for over 25 years and have 3 children, all of whom have grown up vacationing in this home on Bald Head Island. We can only vacation there a few weeks a year, so we rent it the rest of the year. We have dedicated renters who return year after year. Everyone takes wonderful care of our house!

Nana Smith, Manager, Milliken Family Group LLC purchased this house in 2001

Why Nana Smith, Manager, Milliken Family Group LLC chose Bald Head Island

My husband and I bought a beach house on Bald Head Island because it seemed like the perfect place to create family memories for our children and grandchildren (hopefully, someday!). The kids were quite young when we got it. We wanted a home base for our family that would be with us throughout the career moves and stages of life. Over 15 years later, it is a decision we do not regret!

What makes this house unique

The island is very secluded and relatively unspoiled. Contact with the outside world seems very limited, and we really lose track of time there. Its an extremely safe place, where our children can just take off in the morning and come back before dark, dirty and exhausted, ready for dinner and bed! Its good, clean fun, the old fashioned kind we grew up with; limited technology, lots of nature and active, outdoor time. Our kids would spend their days fishing, crabbing, clamming, surfing, biking, roller blading, playing touch football on the beach, and playing 'capture the flag' and 'ghost in the graveyard' in our neighborhood with the other kids staying there whenever we are there. Another favorite activity was setting up an old fashioned lemonade stand. Boy did they rake it in on a hot summer day!

the house and property are beautiful - well appointed and perfectly located

  • 5 of 5

My family and I have had many spring break holidays on Bald Head. Our first visit was in 1990. We have rented so many different houses in varying locations. I prefer being close to the beach while now my youngest daughter likes the privacy of the forest. Milliken House is just steps away from the ocean while nearly hidden from the neighboring houses by marvelous trees and greenery. So we were both very happy. While we were there a flowering bush against the west porch was bursting with blooms and the fragrance of what I believe was jasmine would drift into the living area through open windows. The house is well appointed and very comfortable. My 16 year old daughter brought three girlfriends so the third floor loft with 4 twin beds was perfect. Having 2 golf carts allowed them to have total freedom all week. I am an artist so I really appreciated the interesting and eclectic art, framed and hanging throughout house. Nearly all the houses I've stayed in on Bald Head stick with an island theme in their decorating - and that gets really old and tired with me. I counted 46 pieces of art ranging from playful child-like watercolors to Asian prints to traditional still life to modern abstract pieces. I have to also mention the outdoor shower which may have been my favorite amenity. It was great for washing off after coming back from the beach but it was private enough AND with hot water so I took all my showers outside. I kept my bedroom window open all week so I could fall asleep as well as wake up to the sound of the waves. It was wonderful. As I mentioned, we have been vacationing on Bald Head for years and have rented many different houses in various locations. Milliken House is my favorite. I plan on staying there again in 2018, Thank you!

Very enjoyable stay

We enjoyed our Labor Day weekend stay. The house was perfect for us. It was clean and very well decorated. It was very convenient to the beach. The owners were very good to work with before, during and after our stay. We would definitely stay here again.

BHI Vacationers since 1999

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I, together with our daughter, her friend, and 9 year old lab, greatly enjoyed our stay at Milliken House. The beds were VERY comfortable and the layout allowed the girls privacy on the third floor. The kitchen was well stocked and we easily hosted island friends for dinner. The original (non-beachy) artwork was a surprise, adding interest to the home. My husband likes to stay in touch with the office so we were glad to have reliable wifi and internet. Most welcome were Nana Smith's communications. She made sure we were fully aware of the ins and outs of their home and I knew she was just an email away if we had any questions (which we didn't because of her great pre visit emails). She even forwarded Claude Pope's weekly emails! Our only caveat is (and this is a personal preference and not a criticism) although the home was situated in a PRIME island location, it is surrounded by mature island cedars that block the views and sea breezes, which in July are needed to enjoy the porches. But if it hadn't been a record hot July we probably would not have noticed. Milliken House is a great choice for your BHI stay. Highly recommended!

Just right

  • 5 of 5

Our second stay at Milliken House, and we enjoyed it just as much as last year - we're already thinking about next year now. Nice quiet location, but close enough to the Maritime Market, etc. to be convenient. Easy walk to the beach. Looking forward to coming back!

Felt like home, but with the ocean!

  • 5 of 5

The home is very welcoming and comfortable. We've stayed in various rentals on Bald Head for the past five years, and this home had the most well-appointed kitchen and most comfortable beds of them all. The quality of the appliances, grill, bikes, and beach equipment were excellent. We loved hearing ocean sounds from the master bedroom balcony and seeing ocean views from the third floor. The short walk to the beach made frequent ocean strolls easy and enjoyable. It is apparent much care goes into providing guests with a wonderful vacation experience. Thank you!

Additional information about rental rates

Cleaning Fee $200
Pet Fee $250
Damage Deposit $250

Please contact us regarding the terms of our pet policy before booking, and note that the refundable damage deposit for those persons bringing a pet with them is $500, rather than $250. There is no "pet fee." The VRBO system isn't set up to allow for a higher damage deposit for pets, so it shows it as an additional $250 pet fee, but it will be refunded per the contract if no damage occurs. Also, the quote you receive from VRBO will not be exactly correct; we only require one-half of the BASE RENT upfront with the signed contract (which I will email to you after you send me your home address and let me know if you want a Shoals Club membership as well and whether you will be bringing a pet) and the remainder is due 30 days prior to arrival date.

Payment is by personal check or PayPal (your choice).
