The Verde Canyon Railroad offers restored vintage train rides. Preserved cliff dwellings of the Sinagua tribes can be found at Tuzigoot National Monument and Montezuma Castle. Pack the sunscreen for those blazing Arizona rays
There's no way around it – summers in Cottonwood are hot, hot, hot. Pack light if you're heading to your Cottonwood vacation rental between June and August, when high temperature are routinely in the upper 90s, if not the triple digits. Things are much milder in the winter months of December to February, when highs are pleasantly in the 50s and 60s (but can dip below freezing at night, so bring a warm coat). As for that umbrella, it's relatively dry year round, with little rain and even less snow.
There's more than just green in the Verde Valley
Verde may mean green in Spanish, but the towering red rocks that surround Cottonwood and the neighboring towns are anything but. The reasoning behind the name starts to become clear when you get to the Verde River Greenway, a lush oasis that's home to verdant trees and a large migratory bird population. Several creeks feed the river as it winds its way through picturesque canyons and mountainous terrain. Further afield, the Black Hills and Mingus Mountain dominate the landscape, chock-full of hiking trails that offer spectacular views.
Transportation options to and around Cottonwood
The nearest airport is in Flagstaff Pulliam Field (FLG), located 33.6 mi (54 km) from the city center. If you can't find a flight that works for your travel itinerary, you can also fly into Prescott, AZ (PRC-Prescott Municipal), which is 24.1 mi (38.7 km) away.
