About Laurie or Val
Here are 2 of our 23 owners! We are a close family who began renting beach homes in the 70's and enjoyed it so much, that we decided to buy one and continue the tradition.
Laurie or Val purchased this House in 2003
Why Laurie or Val chose Poplar Branch
We wanted a home for our extended family to enjoy in a neighborhood with every amenity. Being right on the ocean was important not only for the view but we could see the kids surf, and our aging parents could see us from the house if they didn't want to come down. It was important for us to have areas where were could spend time together, along with areas where you could spend time with just a few. Spending time vacationing together has made for some of our best memories ever!
What makes this House unique
Some of our FAVORITE THINGS are the very PRACTICAL. Top of our list are the ROOM DARKENING CURTAINS in the master suites! Who wants to rise with the sun while you are on vacation? The rooms are named for easy identification. The kitchen cabinets are LABELED so you know where things are. There are always too many towels (bath & beach)in a house for 30, so we have HOOKS everywhere--in many of the bathrooms and even in a common hall. We love the HUGE PICNIC TABLE near the pool. We will grill out or have a Low Country Boil and spread it out on the table. After we eat dinner and play group games with the everyone, the kids end up on the first floor and the adults on the top floor. At night you may find a group on the sectional by the POOLSIDE FIREPIT. The house makes for a great vacation for us all. After living like this, you will never again want to vacation as a group in a hotel!

Amazing, beautiful home in excellent location!
Great layout and every amenity for our family both young and old! We have one word for it--LOVE!
What a great week!
We had a great week at Family Tides. The family living area was our favorite part of the home. It's open, well suited to the kitchen, and comfortable furniture. The Pine Island area is simply beautiful. We would for sure visit the area again. The location to the beach is perfect.
Breathtaking ocean views from main floor. 1 minute walk to the sand.
Amazing home right on the beach in Pine Island. Close to everything you need but tucked away to make it very quiet. Wonderfully decorated large rooms with all the amenities you could ask for
Great Family Fun!
Our family of 7 adults and 6 young children just spent a wonderful week at this fantastic Corolla beach house! The location is ideal with glorious ocean views from the many windows and decks of the house. The beach is less than a minute's walk away. The adult kids spent lots of time in the surf on the boogie boards provided and numerous beach chairs also offered comfort while watching the youngest children play in the sand. We spent hours in the private pool and hot tub and the children swam and played with the available pool toys or in the sandbox located in the shade under the deck. Playing corn hole outside by the pool became a daily ritual. The numerous levels of space inside the house make it possible to have private space but if you all want to hang out together in the great room that is possible, too. The kitchen is well-equipped with all appliances to make life easy and there is a cupboard filled with spices. The grocery store is a few minutes drive away and the children loved the ice cream shop that is in the same area. Booking this house with the owners was a delight as they were friendly, answered all questions and offered many tips to make our stay special. Our family agreed we couldn't have had a better beach house experience!
The Pine Island area is very nice - great trails, tennis courts and pools; it was a nice change of pace from the beach. The house was nicely decorated. The sunroom off the kitchen was a great place to read or enjoy some quiet time. The kitchen was well appointed - it was super helpful that the cabinets were marked with its contents. The game room in the lower level was a big hit with the kids. The room darkening blinds are an added bonus - no one wants to wake up to early on vacation. However, the mattress in our bedroom (LL - Queen) was one of the worst mattresses I have ever spent a night on. It was in very bad shape - springs sticking out and collapsing in the middle. I also have to question if it was actually a queen sized bed - it appeared to be a full. My sons stayed in the room with the daybeds and there were visible, rusty springs sticking out of the trundle mattress. I cannot speak on the condition of the other beds, but the owners could really stand to invest in some new mattresses for the LL rooms.
There was a maintenance problem when we arrived (leaking outside pipe) that caused the bedroom floor in the LL daybed room to be soaked. The owner knew about the problem prior to arrival and had it taken care of the next day. With that, the LL was very damp and humid. I am not sure if it was due to the water soaking the carpet or if it is always like that because it is the LL. A dehumidifier would do wonders down there.
So sorry you had problems with the rental. As I had said, we use it ourselves for just one week each summer and had just left the morning of your arrival! The leak was unfortunate and happened that morning as surfboards were being washed off before being put on cars. One of our boys did not turn off the hose all the way and the running water eventually leaked into the trundle bedroom from this. Yes, having wet carpet for a day or two can cause it to be humid (along with it being July:) and damp but glad they found the issue and began the drying process quickly.
Regarding the beds on that lower floor, my adult cousin stays on the bottom Queen and hasn't said anything, so I'm glad you did. If no one complains we don't know there is a problem! About the trundles, my daughter and niece sleep on those pull outs and while I know they are not very comfortable, there were no rusty springs sticking out of them. I made these beds myself (because the maids do not make trundles or top bunks) and as an adult I could not sleep well on them, but they were intact and safe! These have been replaced as well. The beds on the upper levels were newer and had pillow tops, so it would be doubtful someone would have a complaint about them.
We are glad that you enjoyed the other amenities the house has to offer. With 5 new mattresses, iHomes, and docking stations in each bedroom, and our new fire pit, outdoor sectional and deck furniture you should come back and visit!
I wanted to thank you for opening your beautiful home to us! We had such a great time, and we will cherish the memories of our stay. My parents loved watching all their grandchildren play on the beach, and the bunk room was a big hit with the kids. We also loved the spacious living room with all the great seating areas and beautiful views. The kitchen was wonderfully equipped, and we enjoyed many family meals. The sun room was also a favorite spot for morning coffee. It was our first trip to OBX, and we hope to make it a tradition! Thanks again!
Although we have our own pool, we are also a 3 min walk to one community pool which is by an outdoor tennis court, outdoor basketball court, and playground. There is another community pool on the oceanfront that is a 15 min walk up the beach, or a 5 min drive south of our house. These are all available at no cost.
There is a charge for the gym. The individual weekly cost is $60 per person, $90 for 2 people or $125 for a family of 4.
A day pass can be purchased for $20 for one, $30 for two people.
The indoor tennis courts are available to rent by the 1/2 hour for $18 or the full hour at $36. Call ahead to reserve a time at 252-453-8525. Their address is 290 Audubon Drive, Corolla, NC and it is about a 3 min drive south and across the street.
