The Sea Ranch is a world-renowned primary and secondary home community along a 10-mile stretch of California's most breathtaking, beautiful coastline, about 110 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. The Sea Ranch is particularly famous for its strict architectural standards, following the motto 'building light on the land.' (Houses intentionally have unobtrusive sidings and modest appearance in order to optimally blend into the environment). Casa Pacis shares three lot lines with commons areas and the 4th with an undeveloped lot, which provides for exceptional privacy. The Sea Ranch territory includes tens of miles of private roads, many hiking trails, three recreation centers that are open to renters (free or charge), and a challenging 18-hole golf course. Features such as no street lighting, fences not to mark lot lines but only to shield cars from outside view, no overhead power lines, no sidewalks, and no roof-top antennas clearly differentiate Sea Ranch from normal 'suburbia.'
Located directly above the Sea Ranch's most beautiful sand dunes, at a cul-de-sac near 'Walk-on-Beach,' this cozy home has picturesque ocean views from every room. Our 'House of Peace' has large wrap-around decks and lots of privacy.
The 'Casa Pacis' home has approximately 1150 square feet of rented living area, including a view loft. It features ceramic tile floors and wall-to-wall carpets, as well as vaulted ceilings in all rooms. Large windows, comfortable furniture, a cozy conventional open fireplace, and decor will contribute to making your stay pleasant and memorable. The kitchen is well equipped with modern appliances. Enjoy the extra-large deck area with built-in hot tub (with ocean view), and the overall uniquely private yet close-to-ocean setting.

Ever since we discovered The Sea Ranch in 1970, it has remained our favorite vacation destination. The natural beauty is, every time anew, amazing. The climate at Sea Ranch is markedly warmer and sunnier than elsewhere on the Central California coast (i.e., between Monterey and Bodega Bay).
Klaus Heinemann purchased this house in 1982
We discovered Sea Ranch shortly after we had immigrated to the United States, and immediately fell in love with it, probably because it reminded us in natural beauty of the Amalfi Coast in Italy and in climate of the German North Sea islands. We purchased our lot and built Casa Pacis in 1983 and enjoyed every minute of our numerous stays in this gorgeous environment ever since. It is remarkable that, even though many years passed since we first visited Sea Ranch, the unique character of this incredible place has been preserved. In 2010/2011, much of the interior and exterior was renovated.

We totally loved our time in this house of peace. This tranquil place was totally wonderful. The wildlife around the house is amazing and we saw many birds, buzzards, hawks, deer and seals while we were there. The facilities are amazing. The kitchen is well supplied with utensils, kettle, coffee maker, microwave, oven and cooker. The hot tub in the deck is a wonderful facility too. Sitting out under the stars in the tub was incredible. It is so close to the ocean too ... Less than 5 mins walk! We loved it here and the owner is super flexible with days and length of stay which was superb for our needs. We will come back for sure!
WOW!! Sunny location, end of the road privacy, 150 feet to the bluff trail: Casa Pacis is the perfect getaway. Klaus is a thoughtful and accommodating host, and although he was out of the country, he took care of our minor concern immediately. We felt totally at home and comfortable, and look forward to our next Casa Pacis retreat.
When we first walked in, we thought what a lovely house and property. The two main chairs and dining room set were very comfortable. The owner has lots of rules as does Sea Ranch more than any other of the VRBO units we have rented in the past. Unfortunately, the dish washer was not working and a service man declared it no longer repairable. Klaus likes to maintain the property himself and seems to be quite responsive in some ways. It was rainy season and the lighting was poor with 40-60 watt lamps. Klaus brought over better bulbs. We really did not like the limited light in the garage where a newer washer and dryer were located. This would not be a problem for short stays but we had booked for three weeks. When I complained that the bed sagged to much for my back, Klaus put two large pieces of cardboard on my side and brought a trundle mattress from the other room so for the duration I was 4 to 5 inches higher than my spouse. The bed was better but after two visits to a chiropractor and lots of rain we decided to return home a week early. Klaus's book of rules etc clearly states no refunds under any circumstances. We like Klaus but at one point when I suggested a handle on the side of the building to deal with the very high second step, Klaus told me he was on vacation and I had asked for enough. He did buy a new dish washer but it did not fit the space and as he said, he had to get back home to the Bay Area so he would not be able to jury rig it to get it in prior to our departure. Of course the fact that January is definitely part of the rainy season did not help. We had a few nice days and enjoyed the trails, deck and hot tub. If you like to cook, the cottage is well appointed but be sure to bring you own knives as his do not cut adequately. There are few good restaurants in town and access is on Hwy 1 along the coast. Because of all of the rain, the ocean lane of the highway completely collapsed. The nearby town of Gualala has a two good groceries and the folks in town are very friendly. Talking to several in shops etc., it was stated that Sea Ranch people are different. There is no gate at least in off season but this is a "gated community" where you have to carry special identification and a car tag in case police stop you. So beautiful scenery in a very remote location & that is what the residents value...their privacy. However, it is something of a ghost town in January as many of the cottages are boarded up for the winter.
The upsides to this house are that it is located with a beautiful ocean view and within a short walk to a semi private beach. It is within the unique community of Sea Ranch, and as a bonus, you have access to the lovely community pool less than a mile from the house. However, for the amount of money that we paid, I would not rent it again. We spent over $300 per night and had to wash, dry and fold the towels and sheets. This felt really tacky. On our day of departure, we had to spend all morning waiting for the laundry to be finished. We had to do two loads because whites (all the towels are white) and colored laundry (the bed sheets) could not be washed together, and wait for them both to dry. This took us about four hours because the washer and dryer are old and slow. It is not exactly how you want to spend the last day of your vacation. Most of the houses we have rented in the past ask that you simply put the laundry in the washer and start it.
All of the amenities in the house are very old, it felt like nothing had been redone since the 80's. If you like to cook, bring your own knives, otherwise you will be sawing away at your food with cheap old knives from IKEA. There are small notes and stickers with do's and dont's everywhere, it felt slightly suffocating to us. Again, these seemingly insignificant details would not have had such an impact upon me had I not paid as much as I did.
In summary, the house was nice and clean, small and eccentric, and nestled in a nice location. However, the downsides of old equipment and excess work in the morning would detract us from ever renting it again.
We were celebrating our 20th anniversary and wanted to get away to somewhere quiet with a long weekend of relaxing walks, bike rides, reading on the beach, watching sunsets, and relaxing hot tubs. Had never been to Sea Ranch but can't wait to go back and Casa Pacis was the perfect place to stay. Casa Pacis is comfortable and well appointed. The sweeping views off the porch and hot tub were awesome, the walk to (one of the few good) beaches was 5 minutes. Being at the northern end of Sea Ranch, biking into Guala was very doable. Overall the perfect place in the perfect location. Would absolutely go back.
For those looking for true quiet and seclusion at the coast with the amenities of a full kitchen, hot tub, and fantastic ocean view, look no further than Casa Pacis. To be able to be peacefully on the deck gazing at the ocean one minute, then suiting up for a long bluff hike the next, then arriving back to cook a meal in the nicely equipped kitchen - well for us this was just a perfect place for what we sought. The owner, Klaus, is very responsive to questions and was always reachable quickly. We would absolutely stay again, and likely will!
We had a great week's stay at Casa Pacis with our two young children. The house is exactly as described on this site and the photos provide a very accurate picture of what you'll encounter in this cozy home. This was our first trip to Sea Ranch and we found this home to be ideally situated. It has an unobstructed view of the ocean and easy access to miles of hiking trails. Our twin girls loved having the freedom to run along the trails and were thrilled to see deer, jack rabbits and tons of birds around every corner.
Klaus, the owner, was very helpful. The logistics of renting the place were flawless. He obviously has a lot of experience answering every question you could possibly think of and some you probably couldn't. Between the information that he sent us before we arrived and the resources available in the house, we felt really well prepared to enjoy or time at Casa Pacis. We can't wait to return to Sea Ranch!
