The Sabbath House is not your usual mountain rental cabin. It is a lodge that was designed specifically to house retreats and gatherings for families and small groups. The Sabbath House is the perfect location for family reunions, group retreats, and small weddings. The 5000 square foot lodge, completed in 2008, is constructed entirely of white pine logs. Located in the Alarka Community just outside of Bryson City, NC, The Sabbath House is a unique retreat house that provides a peaceful environment where friends and family can truly reconnect with each other.
The lodge has eight individual bedrooms each with its own private bath. The bedrooms feature custom bedding and window treatments. Five bedrooms have a set of twin beds, and three have both a twin and a full size bed. One bedrooms is handi-capped accessible. The main portion of the lodge features a large, two-story gathering room with a stone wood burning fireplace, comfortable Mission style sofas and chairs, and dining tables and chairs for 16-20. The loft has a comfortable seating area and library as well as a baby grand player piano. An additional gathering room located downstairs is the perfect place for playing games or watching movies.
The kitchen is furnished with professional grade stainless steel appliances (two ovens, a glass cook top, microwave, trash compactor, dishwasher and commercial refrigerator/freezer, numerous small appliances).
A covered porch with rocking chairs runs the full 155 foot length of the lodge, offering an ideal place to visit with friends and family and enjoy the beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains. A second covered porch with out door seating and an open deck with a fire pit are located on the lower level. These provide a great place for making smores and enjoying the beautiful night sky unobstructed by the lights of the city.
Jim Strickland and Rachel Lackey are co-directors of The Sabbath House. The mission of Sabbath House is simply to provide a place where people may experience Sabbath. The lodge hosts retreats for clergy and other care givers throughout the year, but the space is also available for family reunions and other gatherings.
Rachel Lackey and Jim Strickland purchased this lodge in 2008
The Sabbath House has been a dream of ours and our board of directors for many years. The lodge was actually built mostly with volunteer labor over a six year period.
The Sabbath House is not just another cabin rental in the mountain--it is a place where people can truly get away from the hectic pace of everyday life and get back in touch with what is really important.
We had a group of (20)pastor's wives who came for our annual fall ladies' retreat. The house was great. All of the facilities were good enough to satisfy all of our needs. The house was very clean. Each room was cozy and made you feel like you were at home. The drive way up was very rough but the landlord took the audicity to come meet us and help get all cars up the road for two nights! That was certainly kind of them. We are all very appreciative of the owener of the home! They responded very quickly to any questions or concerns that we had and worked hard to resolve any complications that we had as well. The view was wonderful, peaceful and very relaxing! We all had a great time! I highly recommend this home for any occasion. I just want to thank you for Jim and Rachel! You were a pleasure to work with!
We had a group of (22) women who came for our annual fall ladies' retreat. We typically go to different locations each year. The road to get to the house was very scary to travel in a 15 passenger bus, but we made it up with lots of prayer. That's the price you pay for the most gorgeous view I have ever had from the house itself. It was magnificent! Set the stage beautifully to worship the God who created it!
It was very clean and had everything we needed. Kitchen was great, stocked with a huge refrigerator, pots, pans, bowls, platters, paper towels, dish soap and much more. We cooked meals each day and it was set up perfectly to serve and eat with plenty of room. They even provided a small amount of wood to build a fire in the fire pit! Perfect. Rachel was quick to answer every question I had from making the reservation to arriving.
Our ladies loved this place, and we may have to come back to this spot! Highly recommended by me! Thanks so much!
We had 7 branches of our family stay at the Sabbath House for a reunion, what a wonderful choice it turned out to be. Each family had a clean comfortable room with a spectacular view. The Great Room suited our needs perfectly and we could relax and not worry about the cildren disturbing other guests. Thanks again for allowing us to stay at your beautiful home.

Staying at the Sabbath House was wonderful. It truly looks just like the pictures-- nicely decorated and as clean as could be. We used 6 of the 8 bedrooms for family that stayed overnight. On Sat. we had other family that came just for the day. We had a total of 30 people for the celebration and not once did we feel crowded. Everyone especially enjoyed the porch with the rocking chairs which made the perfect place for visiting with each other. The dining area was a great size with the two tables and a buffet for serving. We didn't use the upstairs and downstairs much since our birthday boy is two. We could easily block off the stairs keeping him out of danger. I regret that I didn't get to use the upstairs and downstairs since they were both very inviting and peaceful areas. The downstairs has a huge conference table that would be very useful if you were having retreats or meetings there.
The owners were very helpful in getting us settled and close by if we needed them. Now the road up to the place was our only concern. It is steep in places and a little difficult to drive up if you are not used to that type of driving but we all made it to the top and it was well worth the effort. The view was amazing! I only wish that we could have stayed longer. Hope to get the opportunity to visitt the Sabbath House again.
Thanks to Jim and Rachel - we had six families at The Sabbath House from July 1, 2011 thru July 4, 2011. The Sabbath was perfect for Family Reunion. The mountain view was incredible! Loft with Grand Piano, we had so much fun singing songs there. Kids played in the entertainment room (basement) and extended double wood decks, rocking chairs, swings. All kids slept in their own sleeping bag, just like in a big tent. I cannot image how much fun they had. Kitchen with a commercial size refrigerator, we had 4 to 5 ladies preparing food at the same time. Two dining tables, one for kids, one for adults were perfect! We used to rent different houses, so everybody squeezed to one house until bed time, but this time, we had more space than we can expect! Jim and Rachel’s responds to our requests were prompt. Thanks to them again. The Sabbath house will be our first choice next year!
Jim and Rachel - Thank you for a fantastic weekend. As you know, we had five families together at The Sabbath House. Everyone had a great time and the place was perfect. Pictures do not do this house justice! Everything in the house was exceptionally clean. It is certainly a beautiful location in the mountains and definitley offers something for everyone. You were both so helpful and answered any questions we had during the planing of the trip. You made us feel so comfortable and at home when we arrived and were there to help us in any way. We would definietly recommend The Sabbath House and hope to return next year some time.
