About the property

Cottage, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

Turning Point, a Terrific Hatteras Rental.

Turning Point is located in the quiet, picturesque Brigands' Bay neighborhood that has scenic views, gnarled old live oak trees, Pamlico Sound access, and is friendly to walkers, bikers, kayakers, kids, and even dogs.

We don’t have any fancy stuff -- no hot tub, pool, game room, home theater, or video library.

We do have a comfortable, homey Hatteras beach cottage that is light and airy with warm juniper paneled walls and a cathedral ceiling in the great room. The rooms are large, and the furnishings are tasteful. You won’t feel crowded here.

The large great room has sliding glass doors that open onto a deck and onto a large, furnished screened porch. The big kitchen with its counters and “island” bar is very well stocked with everything you will need for your stay.

There are three bedrooms and two full baths. Master bedroom and bath are downstairs and two bedrooms, with another bath in between, open onto an upstairs balcony. The master has a queen bed and tv. One bedroom upstairs room has a queen and pullout sofa, the other bedroom has two sets of bunk beds.

There is a large, LED flat screen TV with cable and Wi-Fi service and shelves of books, games, and jigsaw puzzles.

You can fish and crab from the dock on the canal with its fish-cleaning table and bench.

You can tie up your boat at the dock and have access to the Pamlico Sound for more fishing, crabbing, and clamming, or just exploring the shore. There is also a two-person kayak at the house for exploring the Pamlico Sound.

We cater to folks who want to come “and sit a while.” Turning Point is affordable for those who want to come and stay for several weeks – or even months. The basic weekly rental is among the most reasonable around. It’s just that -- a basic rental charge with taxes. No reservation fees or anything else. And there is a discount if you rent for more than one week.

Come to Turning Point and enjoy the laid-back island lifestyle at its best – for as long as you can stay.

Turning Point is a Shore Details house. Not only will the folks at Shore Details make sure your house is clean when you check in and clean up after you, but they are also available to help with any maintenance problems during your stay. In addition, through the company’s Concierge Service, you can have groceries stocked before you arrive, have a pre-cooked dinner delivered to your cottage, arrange for catering for parties, rent linens, find a babysitter, or plan your excursions – charter fishing, eco-tours, sunset cruises, or anything else you want during your stay.

About Kathleen Andres

The year 1983 was actually the year that I purchased property in Brigands' Bay. In December, 1989, just before a record-breaking blizzard at the seashore, the pilings for the house were put in. The cottage was completed in March, 1990. I had been coming to Hatteras Island since the mid-'70s, since my two children were youngsters. I'd always wanted a house here and now I had one. It's beautiful, and I'm still proud of it. Ironically, I have never lived in it. The year after the cottage was completed, I had a real Turning Point in my life. I left my job as an editor at a big city newspaper in Louisville, Ky., got married to a Hatteras islander moved to the seashore. I live on the same street as Turning Point in my husband's house. My two children who grew up knowing nothing but Hatteras beach vacations are now adults and the summers at Hatteras tradition continues with my nine grandchildren. The oldest is 16, and the youngest is 5, and they love Hatteras and Brigands' Bay just as much as their grandmother and parents. We have built many family memories here.

Kathleen Andres purchased this cottage in 1983

Why Kathleen Andres chose Frisco

Brigands' Bay is, in my view, Hatteras Island's premier waterfront neighborhood. It is a true neighborhood, a mixture of permanent residents and rentals, all well maintained. The neighborhood of canals and creeks and marsh and gnarled liveoaks is the best place to enjoy all that Hatteras has to offer. It's right in the middle of the lovely Cape Hatteras National Seashore with easy access to beaches, fishing, the Hatteras charter boat fleet, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, surfing, windsurfing, hiking trials in the Buxton Woods Maritime Forest, and many, many other recreational opportunities.

What makes this cottage unique

Turning Point is located on a picturesque canal with direct access to the Pamlico Sound. You can sit on the bench at the dock and fish and crab or if you have a boat, you can tie it up here and have easy access for the sound for more fishing and crabbing opportunities, clamming, water sports, or just seeing the sights. It's quiet and it's peaceful, the way a Hatteras vacation should be.

Guestbook comments from the owner

These are the ways Turning Point is cool: Big, open, well-lit living space that goes all the way to the roof in the living and dining areas. Spacious bedrooms upstairs and down with plenty of windows. Lots of cabinets and counter space in a bright, open kitchen, including an island to which people can pull up stools and have drinks while kibitzing with the cooks.

Expansive decks, one of them screened-in, overlooking a scenic canal, where you can fish and crab or watch large birds do the same. There’s a dock with a fish table where you can get your catch ready for the kitchen. Bring your boat to the dock and you can follow the canal a short distance out to the Pamlico Sound.

The whole arrangement is elevated a good distance above the ground, which provides a good view of the canal and the neighborhood, from the decks or through the sliding glass doors from the couch.

It’s located in Brigands' Bay, a quiet neighborhood a short distance from shopping, restaurants and public beach access.

Get ready to relax.

Peaceful, Clean, Holiday Retreat for our Family

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Turning Point mid-June 2016. This was our first vacation together as a family and we had a wonderful time. The dock against the canal was a bonus and the neighborhood was quiet. This pet friendly house was clean, in beautiful condition, and had a lovely open floor plan. Beach access was just a short drive down the road. There is a 2 person kayak at the house which was great since we were unable to bring ours. The weekly price of the home was affordable. We will be coming back to Turning Point in the future and certainly recommend this home to people of all ages! Thank you for allowing us to stay in your beautiful home!

Love this place!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent two weeks at Turning Point in May. The house, located in a quiet residential neighborhood, is well maintained, clean and the kitchen is equipped with just about everything you could possibly want or need. The 'beachy' decor, multiple sliding glass doors, and great room with its high ceiling make this a very bright, airy and attractive house. There's a large deck overlooking the canal, a screened-in porch, numerous board games and shelves of books (both fiction and non-fiction) for your enjoyment. There's lots of empty drawer/cabinet/closet space to store all your belongings.

We've been vacationing on Hatteras Island in various locations for over two decades but this is the first time we've stayed in Frisco. We loved the area and especially appreciated the friendly service and local fishing tips and advice from the guys at Bob's Frisco Tackle and Convenience just south on Rt. 12. My husband is a surf fisherman and used Ramps 49 in Frisco and 55 in Hatteras Village to drive onto the beach. Both of these areas also have parking areas and walkways to the beach if you don't have an ORV permit.

Irene knows a great deal about the area and responded to all our questions and concerns quickly. We've already made our reservation to stay again in the fall and hope to continue staying at Turning Point in the future.

Prefect place to make memories!

  • 5 of 5

Our family, and our family dog, had a wonderful week at Turning Point! We had fun kayaking, fishing, crabbing, cooking, and playing board games (in the evening) at the house. The kitchen is stocked better than any rental home we've ever stayed at (including a yearly timeshare). Everything is comfortable and clean and our children (9 & 11) LOVED being there. We love The Scotch Bonnet (fudge & gifts), the local bait shop just past Scotch Bonnet, ABX auto repair, the lighthouse, FRISCO SANDWICH CO., The Mad Crabber, Lighthouse beach for shells, playing in the sound, and in general how it is still a fairly uncommercial area! Our favorite spots away from the house are Sandy Bay on the sound side, Pony Beach, Scotch Bonnet, & Frisco Sandwich Co. Additionally, you couldn't ask for a better person to rent from, Irene is ALWAYS quick to respond and a wealth of information! We would have stayed a month if time and rental availability allowed!

Donnie, Veronica and Riley pup

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at Turning Point. The view was amazing, more than I had expected. Irene was a fantastic host. She called to ask us about the bed, because she had some complaints that it made a noise. It did, but nothing you couldn't deal with. We slept perfectly fine. We enjoyed crabbing and fishing off the dock. Our pup Riley seemed to enjoy it the most. She loved sitting in front of the glass doors or on the deck as we enjoyed our morning coffee. It is a far drive from most tourist type things, but is well worth it. You are on a part of the island that is so narrow, that you can see the sound on one side and the ocean on the other. The only suggestion I would make is to bring bug spray. The mosquitos are relentless! We even left the citronella candles we bought for the next guests. Other than that, we had a fantastic time. I have been to the OBX many times and stayed a few places. From here on out, it will be at Turning Point! We look forward to coming again next year if we can.

Very relaxing 2 weeks in the Outer Banks

  • 5 of 5

Because we decided to spend 2 weeks at the beach this year, we needed to find a reasonably priced house. That is not easy to do without sacrificing comfort, cleanliness & location. I was proven wrong with Turning Point. This house was one of the cleanest, most spacious and well-equipped houses we've stayed at in our 10 years of vacationing here. The kids had a great time crabbing & fishing on the dock and we all had a great time driving on the beach in Frisco. This part of the island is less crowded while still having the convenience of a grocery store, seafood market & several gift shops & restaurants. We hope to come back to relax at Turning Point. Thanks Irene.
