Reviewer Comments:
Firstly, the house is beautiful, the gardens lovely and the views of the ocean and nearby hills are wonderful. We appreciated the expansive windows which allow for great views from every room. The deck was a great place to relax after an active day. However, there are two issues to be aware of: 1) there is no hot water and 2) the coqui frogs make a lot of noise at night.Throughout our 1 week stay, the "hot" water temperature was in the range of about 93 to 98 F. This made for very short and uncomfortable showers. Our complaints about the lack of hot water were met with prompt action from Salt Water Vacations. But, none of the actions cured the problem, which apparently results from the use of a solar hot water heater for which the electrical backup heater's thermostat is simply set much too low. By mid week we had deduced that this was the problem and informed Salt Water, but they never sent out anyone who could adjust the thermostat to a proper temperature, which for a solar backup should be about 115 F. Perhaps the owners are environmentally conscious (a good thing), but have gone a bit overboard in their efforts to conserve energy. We live part time on Kauai and are also environmentally conscious, having a similar solar hot water heater with electric heater backup. So we are very familiar with that type of system. As to the frogs, we were totally unaware of this problem, which doesn't exist (yet) on Kauai. Since experiencing those frogs on the Big Island, we've learned that on Kauai aggressive action is taken to find and remove any such frogs when they do appear. Similar attempts to control the frogs have failed on the Big Island (at least near this rental house).
