Overview

About the property

2 Bedrooms, 1 Bathroom (Sleeps 4)

We call her Camp Starlite, a very sweet cabin in the woods, on the water, with ultimate privacy. There are no neighbors, you are sharing this slice of heaven with the wildlife and an occasional canoe gliding by. Beautiful views any time of the year.

Cabin Life Magazine did a 6 page feature about this cabin! Located in the southern Adirondack Mountains on Piseco Lake.

Camp Starlite sits right over the lake with 500 feet of private waterfront, a dock and private boathouse. The oversized windows capture the beauty of the natural surroundings, so the views are stunning, even at night. We turn on the fire, turn off the lights, and enjoy the reflection of the moon off the lake...just beautiful. The sight of the fog lifting in the morning is worth the early rise.

Sleeps up to 4, but this is the perfect romantic getaway for two. Great destination for couch potatoes and adventurers alike. No need to leave the comfort of the sofa to experience the beauty of the local wilderness, and those who do venture out have plenty of hiking, kayaking, swimming, exploring, skiing, snowshoe and snowmobile opportunities. We supply local guide books and restaurant recommendations.

The open floor plan with cathedral ceilings creates a spacious, airy main room with kitchen, dining and living area with easy to turn on gas fireplace. There are 2 bedrooms, one with queen bed, one with a double. A separate TV room is for watching movies, reading or enjoying that mid afternoon nap. Great lake views from this sweet little room as well.

Camp Starlite has one bath (shower only), a sweet outdoor shower in warmer months, indoor propane fireplace, outdoor firepit, full kitchen, weber grill, wifi, 40' flat screen for DVD movies and Netflix (but no cable), land line phone (no cell service here!), fabulous Sonos Stereo system with indoor and outdoor speakers to enjoy music while grilling or chilling.

Need to work while here? We have a desk right up against the window so you can write that novel or email your client while observing the wildlife on the lake.

WINTER

This cabin is like living inside a snow globe in the winter...there are so many windows you are simply surrounded by the snowfall, it's a beautiful sight! A unique feature is that the moving water out front does not freeze, so there are water views and wildlife sightings year round. Otters are frequently seen sliding across the ice, very fun to watch!

Many hiking, snowshoeing and x-country ski adventures to be found locally. Great fishing. There is an adoroble ski mountain, Oak Mt., next town over with great music, meals and fun skiing. Ask about the $50 discount they offer to our guests! Gore ski mountain is a 50 minute drive. Cross country trails nearby. We supply 2 sets of adult snowshoes and one child pair. We are surrounded by woods, the lake and rivers - so a snowshoe hike right from the front door will take you through very pretty snow covered forest and striking river front spots.

This is snowmobile country - hundreds of miles of groomed trails through the woods and across the many lakes. Stop in to a local pub for lunch and a beer, and head out to the next lake. Local rentals, lessons and guides available.

But our favorite activity is sitting by the fire with a hot cocoa and observing the wilderness and the ever changing weather from the comfort of the sofa :)

An all wheel drive vehicle is necessary to navigate our snowy dirt driveway in winter. It is plowed regularly but can be tricky in icy weather. The other option is to leave your car at the end of the driveway and walk in (rarely necessary).

SPRING and SUMMER

Comes with 4 kayaks, one 2 person canoe, and adult life preservers. Our Lakefront Boathouse provides very easy access to the lake, no need to carry them anywhere. Watercraft available May 10-Nov 1.

This is a kayak haven for both beginners and the more experienced. Kayak 10 minutes to the right, you are on stunningly beautiful Piseco Lake. Kayak 30 minutes to the left (for the experienced kayaker only) to the more remote wilderness of Big Bay Lake. Lots of natural wild shoreline and wildlife to explore right out the front door. Most of our waterfront is too shallow to swim, except for one deep swimming hole. We kayak to the lake and enjoy the clear water and sandy bottom of Piseco Lake for a swim.

FALL

Need we say how stunningly beautiful it is here during foliage? It's magical.

MORE ABOUT THIS CABIN

This is a no parties, no smoking, NO PETS (sorry!), allergy sensitive household. Due to our close proximity to the water, we have limited well and septic capacity. As a result, we can have no more than 4 persons here at any time, so this is not the place for family reunions or for entertaining.

We do our best to keep a pristine home, we are sure even the most discerning guests will be very happy here.

This is a very private, secluded property, however it is not remote. It is easy to get to, we are down a private 200ft dirt driveway directly off Rt 8.

What's to LOVE? Just about everything listed above.

What might you NOT love? There is a small bridge nearby that separates the outlet from Piseco Lake, and you can hear the cars going over the bridge when outside (but not while inside), which is the only thing we wish was different.

Also, RECYCLES are a real hassle here. Guests who choose to stay here must agree to take theirs home if they bring a lot in, or take a trip to the transfer station down the road and leave them there. Leaving a few is fine, but must agree to follow the towns strict recycle rules - they must be kept clean and separate from garbage. We (i.e. the housekeeper) then have to take them to the transfer station and separate them into bins by hand. She simply cannot handle this task if large amounts are left. So - our general rule here is like camping - if you bring it in, you must agree to take it out.

This is a great home for self reliant, independent travelers looking for very comfortable, private and pristine accommodation in a unique and special spot. Piseco and the surrounding area are beautiful, but have limited entertainment venues other than nature hikes, mountains, wildlife, lakes and rivers.

We have recently added a (very expensive!) generator to the property. So, in the event of (infrequent but they do happen!) a power outage, guests should not lose any amenities (lights, heat, phone, internet).

PLEASE NOTE: We get pretty booked up year round, so our housekeeper has set aside her Monday and Friday for us. Our rentals are M-F, M-M, F-M or F-F. Nov to April we can possibly make an exception if necessary, please enquire.

About Maura

David and Maura spend lots of time in the Adirondacks year round. We swim, flat water and white water kayak, paddle board, hike, downhill ski, cross country, snowmobile and simply chill up here.

Maura has a family camp nearby, has been coming to this area forever. We live and work in NYC, it's a 4 hour drive, just put in a book on tape, and in no time we are in paradise. Dave and Maura both work for themselves, and are working hard towards an early retirement to the Adirondacks.

Why Maura chose Piseco

Why this property? It is so very rare to find this kind of privacy on the water, and with such a stunning view! We fell in love the second we saw this location.

We are the third owners. It was a seasonal summer camp since the 40's, using lake water as the water source. The second owners (contractors) started the renovation by securing the foundation, renovating the shell and putting in all those fabulous windows. By keeping the same footprint as the original cabin they were able to keep this amazing waterfront location - it is no longer possible to build this close to the water.

We worked with the previous owners to finish the home - there is a great 6 page article about this cabin and that unusual arrangement in Cabin Life Feb 2015 magazine. We had it winterized, put in a well for water, knotty pine ceilings and walls, wood floors, decorated and opened her doors to our first guests in August 2012.

As far as we are concerned, this is the perfect retirement spot. Until that time, however, we are sharing the house with guests, so far everyone has been just as thrilled as we are!

What makes this house unique

Privacy! Views! Open floor plan, immaculately clean and very easy house. It is in a very naturally beautiful and rustic setting, with lots of wildlife. We (or our guests) have seen loons, mergansers, ducks, herons, fox, coyotes, skunk, tons of fish, otter, owl, bald eagles, tons of birds, deer, fawn, a buck, a mama and baby bear!

First person to see and photograph a Moose (note: not a mouse!) from our property gets a free night stay!

Guestbook comments from the manager

Beautiful Place that we Enjoyed Fully. Did lots of kayaking, hiking & fishing. Gorgeous views from inside (and outside) the house, very fun to watch the weather roll in over the water.

Saw evidence of bears, out front there were blue heron, loons, mergansers and deer. In the water we spotted pike, small & large mouth & rock bass, fall fish, yellow perch and sunny. Beautiful drives & exploration off Rt 10.

Thank You!

Notes:
Cabin is in pristine condition. We take our shoes off inside and prefer that guests do as well to maintain wood floors. This is the perfect place for the discerning guest...it is very clean with nicer than average furnishings. We are looking for guests who will appreciate this attention to detail, and treat the house and contents accordingly. Children are welcome, but this may not be an ideal place for toddlers. We have a wild and woolly 500' of natural shoreline outside, and white furnishings inside, you would have to keep a very close eye on them in both places. Winter is magical, but bring an all wheel vehicle

Sehr schönes Haus direkt am See.

Ausstattung ist perfekt. Es fehlt an nichts. Selbst die Küchenmesser taugen was. Kochgeschirr ebenso.

Der Aussenbereich (Grill , Kanus etc) ist sehr gut eingerichtetet. Die Hausordnung ist ausführlich. Aber vieleicht ist ja gerade deshalb alles gut in Schuss.

Gerne wieder

Perfect Adventure and Retreat Get-Away

  • 5 of 5

The cabin is perfectly designed for cozy efficiency and full enjoyment of the natural surroundings. We are two couples in our 60's who have spent our lives kayaking, hiking, and biking. We only scratched the surface of adventure to be found in the area. The owners truly care about their cabin! Maura was easy to communicate with and her instructions were very clear. We will be going back soon!

A beautiful camp in a great setting. We enjoyed the kayaking, the hiking, the fishing and the tranquility of Piseco Lake and the surrounding mountains. A perfect place to kick back for a relaxing vacation in the Adirondacks.

A Place for Peace and Quiet

  • 5 of 5

This is our second time at this property and everything was excellent. Clean, comfortable, well equipped cabin in a convenient location. This is the perfect spot for a couple seeking to escape from the rat race of normal life. While there is no cell phone service in the area, you will find that the wifi will enable your cellphone to work if it is so configured, so don't fret about missing any calls or texts. There's also a land line if you need it. There's a great sound system both inside and out and the selection of music is endless. If you want to cook, fine - you will find everything you need. But if you don't, drive towards Speculator and you will find some interesting options. Maura leave restaurant suggestions that are right on. You can see that the owners like to be comfortable and are concerned that their guests are too. Highly recommend to you, except for the days we may want to come back.

Beautiful property!

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful little house on a quiet outlet of Lake Piseco. We used the canoe and kayaks daily. Spent whole days on the water. Fishing was OK...mostly rock bass and a few larger whitefish. We mostly just enjoyed the peaceful surroundings and paddling all around the area waterways. Speculator is close enough to get groceries or dinner and ice cream. This is the second property we have rented from Maura and we loved them both.

Map

Car: necessary

For hundreds of years the Adirondacks has been a destination location. Set in the Southern portion of the 6 million acre Adirondack Park, located in Hamilton County, Piseco is surrounded by beautiful mountains and pristine lakes.

Some of the most picturesque flat water and white water kayaking and canoeing can be found in this region. Waterfalls, stunning hikes with views, white water rafting, fishing and hunting are popular activities. The lakes are not crowded in the least, bring your boat and enjoy water sports.

This area is infamous for it's well maintained snowmobiling trails that go for hundreds of miles, all the way to Canada. Local rentals available.
