Overview

About the property

Cozy mountain cabin surrounded by mountains next to the Yellowstone River

Cabin By the River was built in 1995 and rests on the banks of the Yellowstone River, 10.5 miles north of Gardiner, Montana, the only year around entrance to Yellowstone Park. It is situated on about 5 acres in the upper Paradise Valley, south of Yankee Jim Canyon and north of Corwin Springs, Montana. We enjoy a country setting with neighbors across grassy fields.

The cabin is decorated in country cabin decor and will sleep five. There is a queen bed in the main floor bedroom and a queen and a single bed in the sleeping loft. A sofa queen bed in the living room is suitable for small children. The front porch overlooks the river and offers a porch swing, table and chairs and a gas bbq. For rainy days, there are reading materials, games, Dish TV and DVD player with a selection of movies. The small kitchen offers a full size range and refrigerator. Dishes, utensils, coffee maker, crock pot & a brief pantry are provided.

The bathroom is a tub/shower combination. Linens, towels and paper products are provided.

There is a landline telephone for local calls. Wifi service is available but caution that we are in a mountainous area and it is sometimes undependable.

We have a fire ring down along side the river for marsh mellow roasting or just enjoying.

In the grassy area above the cabin there is a swing set, yard games and tether ball, lots of area to run and play. Fishing in the Yellowstone River from our property can be successful and a great experience in a blue ribbon trout stream.

We are only 10 minutes to Gardiner, the north entrance to Yellowstone. Our guests enjoy coming out of the Park in the evening to the quiet setting of the Cabin By the River.

About Wendi Burke

I am a Montana native, 2nd generation (my grandparents homesteaded in northern Montana), and Warren has lived in Montana most of his life having grown up in Northern California. We have 3 grown children and 8 grandchildren, some living in the area. Warren is recently retired from the National Park Service and I manage the cabin. We love living in the mountains but also love to travel. We have been providing lodging for visitors for almost 19 years and have loved meeting wonderful people and sharing our corner of the world. We have a dog (Tillie) and a cat (Patch) who also enjoy our guests.

Wendi Burke purchased this cabin in 1995

Why Wendi Burke chose Yellowstone Country

We built our 'Cabin By The River' in 1995. For 10 years we operated it as a bed and breakfast. We are located in a small valley of the upper Yellowstone River. We have about 5 acres on the Yellowstone River. Our home and the cabin are on this acreage.

What makes this cabin unique

We love being close to the river and hearing it flow by at night. We are in a country setting with neighbors yet private. Guests enjoy fishing right here and having a fire in the fire ring by the river. The mountain views all around are spectacular. Sitting on the porch in the evening or early morning are beyond description!

Clean, cozy, quiet & beautiful place to stay right along Yellow Stone River

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed staying at the Cabin on the River which is conveniently located just 10 miles from the north entrance of Yellowstone Park. It was nice to retreat to quiet location after busy day of sightseeing at the Park! Cabin has everything you need! Nice set up for grilling & eating meals out on the porch overlooking the Yellowstone River or just sitting on porch swing to enjoy glass of wine & take in the view! We enjoyed meeting owners who very friendly & even introduced us to their horse Jasmine & dog Tillie! Would definitely recommend!

Adorable cabin, well appointed, friendly hosts.

A porch swing & the Yellowstone River make for some great evenings after you are tired from hiking in God's beautiful creation.

Great Cabin, Very Convenient and Quiet!

  • 5 of 5

Had a great stay. Convenient access to Yellowstone, short drive to the Northwest entrance, which is Gardiner, MT. Quiet place to relax to get away from the crowds in the park. Relaxing to sit on the deck overlooking the river and watch the kids play on the banks of the Yellowstone. Caught a couple of small trout below the cabin. Owners where very helpful in recommending places to eat in town. Perfect for a family of 4.

Perfect location, cute cabin, but a few problems.

  • 3 of 5

I really want to give this property five stars, because we had such a great trip to Yellowstone, the location was ideal, and there were some wonderful things about the property. It's peaceful, the river is incredible, the yard is amazing. However, we did have a few issues that are worth noting.

1. We booked for our family of 6, but when we arrived there was no bedding for the pullout couch that we needed to utilize. We sent a message to the manager, but had to wait two days before the sheets arrived because she was out of town and there was no backup contact.

2. As previous renters have noted, the WiFi is awful. We had to sit in the driveway to get signal and it had nothing to do with the weather. It was the same for all six days we were there. We weren't there to check the Internet incessantly, but it is necessary at least once a day and it was very difficult and frustrating.

3. The cabin is tiny. I expected it to be small based on the reviews, but it was much smaller I'd anticipated. If you use the pullout couch, be warned that it takes up most of the living room/kitchen space and you'll have to climb over it. The loft is very cozy, but you'll hit your head on the ceiling if you try to sit up. There's no door to the master bedroom, which means there's really no privacy in the cabin, and you have to walk through the bedroom to access the only bathroom. So if you aren't one family, it might be awkward.

4. The kitchen isn't well equipped for a family of 6 to actually eat a home cooked meal. I tried making pasta and salad one night and had to make due with a teeny tiny cutting board, and two small pots in which to boil the water/pasta. There's really no counter space, so I did a balancing act in order to prep the meal. There's no baking/roasting tray, so I had to fashion one out of foil one night. If you want to heat up frozen pizza or something similar, it's fine. But it's not good for actual cooking.

All in all, I think this is a PERFECT cabin for a family of up to 4, but not larger.

Owner's Response: We want to thank you for staying with us and taking the time review our property. We very much regret the issues you encountered. We are usually on site and seek to meet the needs of our guests. During this particular stay, both we and our manager were out of town. We had a backup person but she ended up with a husband in the hospital. We will thoughtfully take in to account the other things mentioned. We do believe the listing description and photos present our property in a very accurate light. The wifi, as we say, can be frustrating. But our location and mountainous terrain make it impossible for much improvement. We will include another cook pot and larger cutting board. We only offer the hidabed for small children and regrettably a miscommunication with housekeeping left it without sheets. We do apologize. We are happy this guest had a great vacation to Yellowstone. As always and as much as possible, guest satisfaction is our main concern.

Beautiful cabin with wonderful views

  • 5 of 5

We loved this house. It's right on the river, with mountains in view. The house itself is cozy, the kitchen is equipped with all of the essentials, and it was clean and well maintained. The winner for us was the front porch though. That's where we were whenever we were at the house. It was the perfect place to watch the afternoon storms move in. We would definitely stay again.
