'Waterlily' is the perfect gathering place for a island family reunion or small group getaway - lots of gathering places and a private deck overlooking the lake.

LOCATION

"Waterlily " is close to Victoria the capital city of British Columbia with it's unique history and charm. WE ARE 10 mins from 3 different golf courses. Or 20 mins away from 2 world class tourist attractions. The Butcharts Gardens and Victoria's inner harbour area. 3 ferry terminals are close by and Victoria international airport is 25 mins away.

Walk up the garden path through fruit trees and grape vines across the large sundeck and through french doors into a rambling split level 3 bedroom main house. Waterlily is a renovated 1950's original lake cottage with large editions added 1970's and 2009.

The Pacific west coast beaches is only a short drive away through the manicured lawns of the famous Royal Roads University.

We are SAFE from bed bugs, biting insects, and break ins.

Pets (LIMIT 2) are only allowed from Oct - May...why? To avoid excessive poo clean up and the attracting of flies during the busy summer season.

Our minimum night stay is 2 nights during off season and 4 during summer season - occasionally less if you are filling a gap in the calendar. We try to accommodate folks to fit their travel plans...to a point.

Here is a list of what extras we provide free of charge:

Once the main house is booked, we don't book different guests into the Lakeview suite to insure privacy for main house guests, although either Peter or I may be in residence in a semi detached suite during your stay.

The 500 sq ft deck has a 'wow' factor with a 180 degree view over Glen Lake plus a old school hot tub and the best Weber BBQ ever made called 'The Vieluxe.'

The private sloping lakefront boasts a Jimmy Buffet inspired Taki Tiki Bar it rocks, a firepit with a drift wood couch (limited firewood supplied), dock with a cruising barge called 'The Queen', rope swing, 2 canoes, sailing dinghy, 2 kayaks, fishing rods, 2 stand up paddle boards for guest use. Lifejackets to fit ages 3-90 in dock box.

For toddlers/children there is a large park next door with new playground apparatus and a water play feature. Running and hiking trails disappear in the hills behind Waterlily. Grab 1 of 7 bikes and go for a cycle inn the safe Galloping Goose old rail trail for 55kms worth of car free cycling trails. Or the NEW Sooke Wilderness Trail which climbs into the hills behind us and over an old railway trestle to Shawnigan Lake and beyond. It is now a part of the Trans Canada Trail system which connects the Pacific to the Atlantic via recreational (no cars) trail system. Maps provided.

Centrally located Waterlily is on the Saanich peninsula Waterlily is 25 mins from the international airport, ferry terminals and 20 minutes from downtown on Victoria's west shore. Nestled amongst the evergreen paradise called Westhills, 7 mins by road is the the historic Royal Roads University and the oceanfront of Esquimalt Lagoon.

Lots of wildlife visit the property, you even may see our resident fisherman 'Hemingway,' a GREAT blue heron, catching fish off the dock. Or native turtles sunning themselves on a log next door. There are the families of otters crunching on crayfish up in the rope swing tree fort. And often raccoons stop by to gather the ripe fruit during season. More bald eagles live here than across the US border.

Bear Mtn Gym and Yoga center is 10 min drive up the hill. The new Y is walking distance - pool, terrific tube slide, yoga and large weight gym. 5-8km running trails easily accessible on foot or bike go around nearby Lake Langford.

Westhills Stadium home to the Canadian National Rugby team is located on Glen Lake Road just around the corner and across the lake from us. We discount for rugby players and fans on special events ( I am a rugby coach).

About richard cook

Born in Australia and raised in BC, worked in New Zealand 20 years - I now work as an counsellor in our local Saanich school district.

The property reflects my time spent sailing, travelling and living in New Zealand, Australia and the Caribbean. I enjoy hosting people and sharing the adventures to be had here on Vancouver Island..... be it great food, world class Salmon fishing spots or surf kayaking locations.

richard cook purchased this house in 2004

Why richard cook chose Victoria

My parents raised me to appreciate a good view and Waterlily has 200" and more. Bald eagles nest in our giant fir trees, large Great Blue Heron fish from the same docks we do, otters crunch the crayfish while turtles bask in the sun on the cedar logs that form a water garden next door. It is not unusual to see a deer standing on hind legs to reach low hung fruit then stop on the lake path to watch us playing crib down at the firepit in the early evening during summer.

So much to do within easy reach from our home with good weather - not too hot and not too much rain. Very few biting insects. The only things that bite are the bass, trout and catfish in the lake.

You do feel a sense of calmness being so close to the heart of Victoria and it's sites. Best of both worlds 20 mins apart.

What makes this house unique

Taking The Queen's barge out around the lake is worth price of admission. So much fun to cruise the lake with a floating deck equipped with palm trees. But during summer I like to walk down to the Taki Tiki and make a fresh cup of coffee in the early morning, sit silently on a couch by the glassy lake and just be. Maybe see a family of baby raccoons walk along the shoreline looking for breakfast. Or ducklings swim by. Or grab a yoga mat to do some stretches before diving into the lake for a warm water swim. The lake can get to 80f (24c) degrees (matching air temperature) on the surface during summer. When it gets too hot on the lake then you can retreat with a book or a beer to a hammock under shade by the numerous fruit trees..

There are 7 bikes to take out on the historic cycle trail called the Galloping Goose at the south end of Glen Lake road. You can ride for 40 kms in either direction travelling on a protected bike path, shaded by forest for most of it.

Hiking/running trails are easy walk away from your front door. Ask me about where to go mountain biking.

I am not a golfer however Bear Mtn, Royal Colwood and Olympic View are all within a real time 10 minute drive. World class Salmon and Halbut fishing is an hours drive up the west coast. I charter fish every year with success (limit out on Halibut and Salmon)

Rugby Canada makes nearby Westhills Stadium it's West Coast home field and the new training centre is literally at one end of our lake.

Exceptional Oasis

  • 5 of 5

My family spent the month of July at this property. We all enjoyed the many amenities that were available during our stay. The rope swing, amazing bike paths, close proximity to the ocean, floating barge, and of course the tiki bar provided lots of entertainment for the adults and the kids!

The owners of the property were wonderful and gave us a great tour when we arrived. They remained friendly and helpful during our entire stay. This added to the great experience that my family had. The owners were also amazing with the kids and made everyone feel at home.

The huge deck overlooking the lake with the giant BBQ was a great place to have dinner while hosting a few friends. I highly recommend this epic property to people looking for a place to relax that also serves as a launch pad to many adventures.

Owner's Response: One of the benefits of being a vacation rental owner is meeting the people who create lasting family memories at Waterlily. The youngest guest was 8 years old and it was her first time off a rope swing which has a launch pad from 8 feet up in two giant cedar trees. The family and their dog Maggie where easy going, respectful and fun. I wish them well in their future vacations and welcome them back should they wish to revisit Waterlily.

Peaceful winter paradise

  • 5 of 5

What a lovely place. We had to go to Victoria for the holidays and we had a wonderful time. Quiet and peaceful place right on a lake! It was so nice to come home to after busy days of visiting elderly parents.

And the hot tub was wonderful.

Owner's Response: Our home is more than just a "summer vacation place" ...Waterlily Lane and Victoria enjoy great weather to go outside to play, discover, explore or just be. The view from the hot tub is worth the price of admission. The proximity to beach walks (Esquimalt Lagoon or East Sooke Park) or hiking and biking trails (Goldstream Provincial Park or Galooping Goose cycle trail) makes Waterlily a place to not only relax but enjoy moving and doing.

Can't wait to return!!

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful weekend we had! The home was neat and tidy, airy and beautiful. Most of our time was spent on the deck, in the hot tub, and swimming and floating on the lake. The tiki bar down by the lake provided the perfect backdrop for our impromptu (kid friendly) dance party. And in the quiet evenings after the kiddos were asleep I had the opportunity to curl up on the sofa and read my book while the lake breeze gently blew through the open french doors. Yeah, not too shabby.

We were a small crew but the property provides plenty of space for more friends and family. Great space for a big BBQ and dinner as well.

Our hosts were friendly and helpful but gave us plenty of privacy and space. Peter offered perfect cafe suggestions and gave us a run down on some of the events that were going on while we were in town.

Let's just put it this way, its the kinda place that finds you planning your next visit there while you are packing your towel into your suitcase.

Great getaway!

  • 5 of 5

I rented the home with 4 other women to host my photography retreat! It was spacious and tidy and we had so much fun on the lake. The canoe and motorized dock were a hit! The fruit trees were all ripe which was another added bonus. Will definitely be back!

Rejuvenating

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic time here. Richard and Peter have really thought of everything that would make your time here fun and relaxing. We enjoyed the barge, the paddle boards, canoes and kayak. There is lots of space for a group and the property, although small, has various activity centers. Can't wait to come here again!

This was our third visit and each time was wonderful! Richard is a great host, the house is very comfortable, the sunny deck overlooks the beautiful warm lake, and all the water toys (raft, canoe, paddle board...) add to the fun! Thanks for the memories!
