About the property

Lakefront House sleeps 7+, 3.5 Bedrooms, 2 Baths. extra suite sleeps 2+

Victoria the capital city of British Columbia in Canada celebrates a 150th birthday in style on July 1st 2017. Our lakefront home called Waterlily has the three key ingredients to a worthwhile vacation: location, price and a beautiful view.

For an awesome aerial drone video click on the home page gray bar "video" link embedded on the home page photo.

For a home made tour of the inside click and paste this youtube link: http://www.youtube.com/embed/MVD5R0Z918E?rel=0

'Waterlily' is the perfect gathering place for a island vacation appealing to the whole family including the family pet. Or host a reunion, a group getaway or even a wedding party - lots of gathering places and a private deck overlooking the lake. Our first white wedding was in June 2015 on the lakefront lawn. The most common comment I hear from guests is the photos don't do the "wow factor" of the property justice. The atmosphere of the deck and garden lake view is one of peace and invites the guest to de-stress - just be.

"Waterlily " is 20 mins away from both world class tourist attractions the Butcharts Gardens and Victoria's inner harbour area. 3 ferry terminals are close by and Victoria international airport is 25 mins away. The Pacific west coast is only a short drive7 minutes away through the manicured lawns of the famous Royal Roads university overlooking the ocean beaches. Or take one of 7 bicycles and hop on the scenic flat riding Galloping Goose cycle path which stretches through farmland and city scape 55km- 34 miles.

**** NO FALSE REVIEWS HERE *** the reviews are genuine on my VRBO/Home and Away site.

Base price: $400/night is for main house only each additional person is $50 to a max of 9.

The Lakeview suite is an extra $150/night (max 3)

Total occupancy is 12 people - $600 per night.

We now offer credit card payments through Square Up, small fee applies.

Once the main house is booked, I don't book different guests into the suite to insure privacy for main house guests, although I may be in residence in my own semi detached suite during your stay. During summer, the minimum stay booking is 4 nights. (Off season Oct-April min stay is 2 nights.) Click on video link in gray box in the above photo for inside video tour.

Here is a list of what extras we provide free of charge:

* a 10 x 12 ft electric motor barge to cruise the lake with - easy to use Minn Kota electric trolling motors.

* 2 canoes, 2 kayaks, 2 sup boards, and a sailing dinghy

* 6 bikes to cycle the famous Galloping Goose cycle trail

* lakeside fire pit and the Taki Tiki Bar/change room

* fishing rods, tackle boxes

Walk up the garden path through fruit trees and grape vines across the large sundeck and through french doors into a rambling split level 3 bedroom main house. Waterlily is a renovated 1950's original lake cottage with large editions added 1970's and 2009.

The 500 sq ft deck has a 'wow' factor with a 180 degree view over Glen Lake plus a old school hot tub and the best Weber BBQ ever made called 'The Vieluxe.' http://virtualwebergasgrill.com/2014/08/vieluxe-the-weber-luxury-grill-youve-probably-never-heard-of/

The private sloping lakefront boasts a Jimmy Buffet Taki Tiki Bar, a firepit with a drift wood couch (firewood supplied), dock with a cruising barge called 'The Queen', rope swing, 2 canoes, sailing dinghy, 1 kayak, fishing gear, 2 stand up paddle boards for guest use. Lifejackets to fit ages 3-90 in dock box.

For toddlers/children there is a large park next door with new playground apparatus and a water play feature. Running and hiking trails disappear in the hills behind Waterlily. Grab 1 of 7 bikes and go for a cycle inn the safe Galloping Goose old rail trail for 55kms worth of car free cycling trails. Maps provided.

Centrally located on the Saanich peninsula Waterlily is 25 mins from the international airport, ferry terminals and 20 minutes from downtown on Victoria's west shore. Nestled amongst the evergreen paradise called Westhills, 7 mins down the road is the the historic Royal Roads University and the oceanfront of Esquimalt Lagoon.

Stay connected with wireless internet throughout, guest computer with printer attached so no need to bring your laptop. Iphone docking stations available.

The BEST meat store on the island (Glenwood Meats) within 200 meter walk. Westshore Mall with 5 plex movie theatre 5 mins away with 2 large grocery stores, Walmart, BC Gov super liquor, restaurants.

Lots of wildlife visit the property, you even may see our resident fisherman 'Hemingway,' a GREAT blue heron, catching fish off the dock. Or native turtles sunning themselves on a log next door or the family of otters crunching on crayfish up in the rope swing tree fort. More bald eagles live here than across the border.

Waterlily has everything you need to make yourself comfortable and with easy access to the main attractions our beautiful British Columbia Island has to offer - without the hassles of heat, traffic jams and biting insects. The hiking trails of Goldstream Provincial park is only 3 kms away.

Bear Mtn Gym and Yoga center is 10 min drive up the hill. 5-8km running trails easily accessible on foot are nearby.

Westhills Stadium home to the Canadian National Rugby team is located on Glen Lake Road just around the corner and across the lake from us.

About richard cook

Born in Australia and raised in BC, worked in New Zealand 20 years - I now work as an counsellor in our local Saanich school district.

The property reflects my time spent sailing, travelling and living in New Zealand, Australia and the Caribbean. I enjoy hosting people and sharing the adventures to be had here on Vancouver Island..... be it great food, world class Salmon fishing spots or surf kayaking locations.

richard cook purchased this house in 2004

Why richard cook chose Vancouver Island

My parents raised me to appreciate a good view and Waterlily has 200" and more. Bald eagles nest in our giant fir trees, large Great Blue Heron fish from the same docks we do, otters crunch the crayfish while turtles bask in the sun on the cedar logs that form a water garden next door. It is not unusual to see a deer standing on hind legs to reach low hung fruit then stop on the lake path to watch us playing crib down at the firepit in the early evening during summer.

So much to do within easy reach from our home with good weather - not too hot and not too much rain. Very few biting insects. The only things that bite are the bass, trout and catfish in the lake.

You do feel a sense of calmness being so close to the heart of Victoria and it's sites. Best of both worlds 20 mins apart.

What makes this house unique

Taking the Princess raft out around the lake is worth price of admission. But during summer I like to walk down to the Taki Tiki and make a fresh cup of coffee in the early morning, sit silently on a couch by the glassy lake and just be. Maybe see a family of baby raccoons walk along the shoreline looking for breakfast. Or grab a yoga mat to do some stretches before diving into the lake for a warm water swim. The lake can get to 80f (24c) degrees (matching air temperature) on the surface during summer. When it gets too hot on the lake then you can retreat with a book or a beer to a hammock under shade by the numerous fruit trees..

There are 7 bikes to take out on the historic cycle trail called the Galloping Goose at the south end of Glen Lake road. You can ride for 40 kms in either direction travelling on a protected bike path, shaded by forest for most of it.

Hiking/running trails are easy walk away from your front door. Ask me about where to go mountain biking.

I am not a golfer however Bear Mtn, Royal Colwood and Olympic View are all within a real time 10 minute drive. World class Salmon and Halbut fishing is an hours drive up the west coast. I charter fish every year with success (limit out on Halibut and Salmon)

Rugby Canada makes it's West Coast home field and training centre at one end of our lake.

Lots of fun in a lakeside home

  • 4 of 5

We very much enjoyed our stay at the "Taki Tiki" over the Easter weekend (2017). Our host, Richard, was very helpful and quick in responding to our initial questions for the reservation. The home is well equipped for a "beach" vacation; unfortunately the weather did not cooperate with us, but we still hung out on the lakefront, utilized the floating dock for lake tours, sat out on the huge deck and soaked in the hot tub.

This is fun house to stay at and we would definitely go back again.

Owner's Response: Luckily for us our guests can turn a grey day into sunshine. This couple from Calgary are Jimmy Buffet fans and were welcomed with a shotski before the tour of the property! There is lots to do and see around the area in any weather but this winter was definitely one for the history books. Storm watching on the lake will have to be a new feature I do not want to promote. Bring on summer.

Perfect lake house!

  • 5 of 5

Wow! What a great place! The house is spacious and bigger than the pictures show. Everything you could need (and more) is there. Richard is a fantastic host--from fielding all my questions, booking, and showing us around--a great great host!

What can I say about the lake and allll the amenities available?? Amazing! The lake was the most perfect temperature to swim in. All of the lake toys and taki tiki bar were incredible. But the piece de resistance?? The princess barge--hours and hours and hours of enjoyment!! So fun was the barge that we hardly partook in any of the other fun things to do at the lake house.

Thank you for letting us stay at your amazing home. We can't wait to be back! Lucky for us, that happens in just over a week ;)

Owner's Response: Whether guests come from afar or as close as North Vancouver, I try to provide a comfortable fun experience for all. News flash: The Glen Lake Princess barge has just been replaced by an even better raft "The HMS Glen Lake Queen" is now ready for guests to enjoy crusiing the spring fed lake.

Beautiful view and lot, lots of recreation options provided

  • 5 of 5

Owner was great, place had everything we needed plus more, would stay here again.

Just a FYI to anyone who is a Zen design person this is not the place for you. Personally I liked the character the ornaments and decorations added to the house and the lot but some people may find it too much. This is not a criticism just trying to provide info to others.

wonderful family vacation

  • 5 of 5

Great long weekend getaway with family and friends on a lovely property with all the amenities - You couldn't ask for anything more.

The place was quirky and fun with lots of water toys (the Princess Barge was our favorite!)

Close to amenities, yet can feel like you're far from town.

Richard is a friendly owner who strives to ensure you have a great time.

We were 5 adults and 5 kids (ages 10-12) and this was the perfect multi-family vacation home.

We will for sure be back!

Reveiw

This review was written  by: Preslee W. Age:11

We stayed at 1193 waterlilly lane for 7 days and it was a beautiful experience. I was greatly impressed by Mr. Cooks amount of effort on Waterlilly's back yard. He built a rope swing for his guest s   and was immensely generous and lent us his bikes , kayaks, canoes,SUP (stand up paddle boards ) and his princess raft/barge. Mr. Cook gave us free rope swing and kayak  lessons. Sneaking in a few stories and a joke or two about his "skirt" for kayaking. By looking around the place you could see that Richard has a sense of humor. For instance the "Unattended children will be given espresso and a free kitten" sign like most other's,made me laugh. I really loved seeing the heron Hemmingway on the princess one morning.  There was a mediocre hot tub. It was not extremely clean. I noticed a some what itchy rash appear from the hot tub.

Now time for the interior, The bedrooms were all very nice. I really admired the stained glass on the master bedroom door. Kiri's room  (richards daughter) was beautiful.  The room was very spacious without the crib setup.

The clock was 20 minutes fast but nothing serious. The other bedroom was nice I admired the Australia bed spread. The clock was fast as well. It was a smaller  bedroom but still nice.  The living room/kitchen were nice I give them a double thumbs up. The glasses were quite cool though. Both bathrooms were nice but in the basement bathroom we noticed a musty smell. You could tell there was water damage in the house. I would recommend adding carpet or removing the carpet tack. It hurts to step on! Waterlilly was a great idea Richard !

Good job Richard

I reccomend staying here

Owner's Response: Thanks Preslee for taking the time to write such an honest review. As someone who has worked in the school system (counsellor and teacher) all my working life, I appreciate the honest, unfiltered comments - no sugar coating here. Well done. For future guests to note - we had two power failures during recent wind storms that caused our water sump pump to fail thus a flood in the lowest drain (basement shower) so when there is a window of no bookings (October) the bottom bathroom floor will be replaced and reparations done. Likewise for the hot tub - which suffered from power failures too. Power failures due to weather are unusual in the summer months.
