About the property

Lake House, 5 Bedrooms + Loft, (Sleeps 19)

Relax at the Great Escape, one of the best rental homes on lake Gaston! This lake house has 486 feet of shoreline on a unique peninsula lot with spectacular lake views from three sides of the home! One side has a protected cove for your family to swim with minimal boat traffic at your dock with 10 feet deep water (enough to jump from sundeck). Outside your quiet cove, you have 1.5 miles of an awesome cove to ski, wakeboard and fish. You also have a covered dock with boat lift plus a jet ski lift. You can rest assured your boat will be protected from rain and wake chop.

This lake house has it all: spectacular views from 3 sides of the home, deep water at dock, gentle slope only 30 yards from the back deck of the home and a quiet dock area to swim without worrying about your kids getting run over by a jet ski or having hundreds of wakes hammer your boat.

The home is a beautiful, brick, two story contemporary home with first floor master and laundry. There are 5 bedrooms, loft game room, rec room, screened in porch and 3 1/2 baths. Total square footage is 4000. Internet WI-FI, DirecTV, whole home DVR, great cell service for Verizon and land phone line is included.

Bedroom configurations are:

Master King Suite #1 - First floor luxurious master suite with king bed, balcony to deck, lake views on 2 sides and full private bath with lake views and walk-in closet.

Second master bedroom #2 - First floor bedroom has queen bed, full bath, lake view and office desk with laser printer.

First floor bedroom #3 - First floor guest bedroom has a queen bed next to full bath.

Second floor bedroom #4 - Upstairs bedroom has a queen bed with lake view next to full bath.

Second floor bedroom #5 - Upstairs bunk room with 3 sets of bunk beds (6 twin beds) plus 1 twin bed and access to full bath down hall.

Loft - Upper level has loft with 3 twin beds and 1 futon (over looking kitchen/great room).

Rec Room - Upstairs rec room has 1 twin bed with flat screen, DirecTV and whole home DVR service.

Main level great room has 10 chair dining table convenient with kitchen and large deck overlooking lake. The kitchen has new stainless steel refrigerator (with 2 ice makers) and granite counter tops. Great room has Hi Def flat screen TV with blue tooth enabled sound bar and blue ray player. The deck spans the width of the home and has a drop down section designed to lower the hand rail allowing awesome views of the lake from the upper deck and inside the home. The deck also has a Weber gas grill, Weber charcoal grill and 5 person dining table with umbrella.

The home is on a secluded 1.5 acre lot. There is a gently sloping stone walkway from house to the covered double boathouse with one lift for renter, sundeck, 2 jet ski lifts and paddle boat for renter. The concrete parking lot has a basketball hoop.

The Great Escape is located on Great Creek in the northwest quadrant of Lake Gaston. The home is a 10 minute drive from I-85. Great winery and golf only a few miles away.

What is the water skiing like in Great Creek? The creek is protected from the main lake by a no wake zone and box culvert. That keeps many of the main lake yahoos out of our 'private' creek. With 1.5 mile run, it makes a perfect spot for slalom skiing and wakeboarding. It's not uncommon to see some barefooting and great slalom skiing in the mornings. The jet skis and tubes generally don't come out until 11:00 AM.

How is the fishing in Great Creek? The fishing is pretty good right from the dock at the home. Bream (Blue Gill) and catfish are easy to catch from the dock. We also have large mouth bass all around the docks in the creek. There are many bass tournaments that run out of the nearby Holly Grove Marina and many of the fishermen tell me our cove is as good as any at holding large mouth 'keepers'. The main lake offers a variety of good fishing spots including large grass fields as you head up into the river.

How is the boat traffic in Great Creek? During the week is generally good throughout the day. The weekends in the summer can get busy in the creek between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM. When it gets too much boat traffic to ski or wakeboard, you can get into calm water in the river in about 20 minutes. Going out of Great Creek and heading north, you enter the river portion of Lake Gaston. The river offers miles of calm water, straight runs and deep water (26 feet). Since the water comes from the bottom of Kerr Lake, the water is cool which is refreshing in the heat of the summer. Deep, cool water as calm as butter is awesome for skiing and boarding.

Do you rent any water toys? We have 2 stand up paddle boards available for rent. Cost is $150 for one and $275 for both. They are 10'8" Isle boards with adjustable paddles.

Lake Gaston is one of the truly superior lakes in the country, located in the piedmont area of northern NC and southern VA. It covers 20,300 acres, 34 miles long, and has over 350 miles of shoreline. The lake has very little water level fluctuation year round and has the highest water-quality rating in eastern USA (NC Stream Sanitation Commission, A2 rating). Lake Gaston is well stocked with game fish including striped and largemouth bass, bream, crappie, sunfish, and several varieties of catfish. Lake Gaston has an average depth of 40+ feet (~80+ ft. deep near eastern end at dam).

Checkin time is 4:00 PM and checkout 11:00 AM EST.

About Pete Mulligan

We live in Cary, NC. Pete is an IT manager for a contract research organization. Teresa is a retired finance analyst and owns a real estate business.

Pete Mulligan purchased this house in 2015

Why Pete Mulligan chose Lake Gaston

Our family loves the lake life. We rented house boats and homes on different lakes in Kentucky, Tennessee and North Carolina. We fell in love with Lake Gaston with the large number of secluded coves for great skiing and constant water level. The boat houses are awesome with power and boat lifts. Our location is convenient to I-85 which avoids long drives through numerous rural towns. You can't beat the lake life on Lake Gaston at the Great Escape!

We purchased a home on Lake Gaston in 2003 that is only 2 lots down from our current home so we know Great Creek and Lake Gaston very well. We upgraded to the new home to provide more finished space, awesome lake views, larger great room, screened in porch and deeper water at the dock.

What makes this house unique

Our home sits on a very unique penisula lot with 486 feet of shoreline. The water views are really awesome (from 3 sides of home) and the yard is filled with beautiful hardwood trees that provide a mix of shade and privacy while still providing excellent views of the water. A gentle slope to the dock, 10 feet deep water, a quiet cove around the dock to swim, shade at both the house deck and the dock sundeck, first floor luxurious master suite, screened in porch, enormous kitchen great room all together make this home truly unique and thus one of the best homes on Lake Gaston. This is The Great Escape!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you again and again! We enjoyed each day of our stay at "The Great Escape". This is our first year staying in VA. We usually stay closer to Littleton but really liked it hear as well. When the lake got too crowded, we just headed up river!

Perfect weekend!

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I stayed at the Great Escape for a girls weekend away. It was the perfect house, both inside and out! We loved the open concept downstairs for socializing. And the outdoor space was beautiful! We will definitely be coming back.

Very impressed

  • 5 of 5

This home was excellent for our thanksgiving get together. Family from Australia and all over the States enjoyed both the comfort of the house and the picturesque setting on the lake.

The owners were very easy and obliging to deal with.

We would rent this property again in a heartbeat.

Just the right amount of water, trees, family and fun.

  • 5 of 5

This house was spacious and uncluttered but had everything that was needed for a weekend getaway.

5 family units and we never felt anyone was on top of anyone. The large dining space was a wonderful place we could share meals. We brought a small folding table for the kids and there was still plenty of room.

Fall was the perfect time for this house. The trees on the lake were breathtaking.

Amazing House - great owner and fully stocked for fun and relaxation

  • 5 of 5

We just love this house, it's the best house we've rented on Lake Gaston thus far. The owner Pete is very organized and easy to work with and the house is fully stocked with anything you need from kitchen supplies to games and has tons of room/storage. We had 4 families go and had plenty of room and were never on top of each other. One of the best things about this house is the yard and water access/view. It's incredible. Water on 3 sides and you are in an area that is away from a lot of boat traffic. Our kids had a BLAST! They loved jumping off the upper deck of the dock (even the parents did it too!) and I'm so glad we rented the paddle boards. The kids learned it very easily and even out-of -shape adults were able to use the paddle boards and had fun. The fire pit area was a favorite, plenty of comfortable chairs and it's right on near the water which was so great. We also really enjoyed the ping pong table and corn hole boards. I can't say enough good things about this house, we can't wait to go back!!
