About Barbara and Chuck

Chuck and Barbara moved to the Outer Banks from Richmond, Virginia in 1997 and bought a 'beach box' house in Kitty Hawk. We had always wanted to live near the ocean and this was the time to make the move. We spent a year doing hands-on house renovation and we still live in the same house. Chuck is self-employed as a cabinet installer and can do just about anything related to carpentry. Barbara retired at the end of 2012 as executive director of the Outer Banks Community Foundation, an organization that awards grants to area nonprofits to help meet unmet needs in the community. We have 2 indoor cats, Xena and Gabby, and have been adopted by 3 outdoor cats that have become quite tame since we're feeding them twice a day. We are still ecstatic about our move and the fact that we can see the ocean by just looking out our windows and our feet are in the sand and water after a short walk. We love living on the Outer Banks!

Barbara and Chuck purchased this cottage in 2002

Why Barbara and Chuck chose Northern Coast & Outer Banks

Among the first neighbors we met after we moved to Kitty Hawk were Doc and Carolyn who had built and lived in Leaping Porpoise. We became good friends and spent many happy hours visiting with them in their home. When they moved away for health reasons we knew we wanted to buy their house. It was in the same block as our house so we knew it was a great beach location and we knew renters would love it.

What makes this cottage unique

We love the peaceful neighborhood and the short walk to the uncrowded beach. We clean the property ourselves after guests leave so it's spotless for the next group.

Guests renting for a full week receive a special welcome gift--a hand painted glass ornament. Barbara's sister is an artist and creates a new design each year just for our renters so returning renters can add to their collection!

Close to historical Wright Brothers Monument, NC Aquarium, gorgeous Elizabethan Gardens, The Lost Colony outdoor drama, helicopter and bi-plane sightseeing trips, visit lighthouses from Currituck to Ocracoke, public golf courses nearby

Leaping Porpoise

  • 5 of 5

My three grown children along with one SO, my 3 year old granddaughter, and myself truly enjoyed our week of vacation. The proximity to the beach was a definite bonus while carting all the needed toddler distractions!

I can't say enough good things about the rental house. When we arrived, I was delighted to see the interior was kept up to date and IMMACULATE. The master suite is quite large and served as an extra play area for the grand, as there were lots of toys (toddler euphoria).

Literally everything we needed was there. If we wanted a particular item we just looked for it, because we came to believe we would find it. And we did. Lots of beach chairs, umbrellas, toys and the buggy to tote them to the beach. The outside shower and hose were perfectly placed for sand remediation.

When the toddler lobbed a pillow and broke a lamp we called the owners right away. They couldn't have been more gracious. We would make this reservation again without hesitation!

Perfect for our family!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage came highly stocked with everything you can imagine to make your stay easier and more relaxing with less to worry about on vacation. The owners were very nice and helpful as well. The cottage was nicely located close to the beach and a beach access. Our children enjoyed riding their bikes to the beach. The place was also child friendly with plenty of toys and games for them. We couldn't have asked for a better place to stay!

Comfortable, clean home with easy access to beach and everything you need

  • 5 of 5

We came back to Leaping Porpoise for the second time and loved it just as much (actually probably more!) than when we were here last. The home is so comfortable and has everything you need for your stay. The beds are good quality--we all slept so well--and the owners provided some key baby gear so our one year old was right at home (a pack n play for her to sleep in, a high chair, a stroller, even a baby gate). We walked to the beach every morning (just one block away) and enjoyed the toys and sandbox and hammock every afternoon. Our six year old loved all of the board games and puzzles. We love to come to OBX in October when there aren't big crowds. The restaurants are still open but we never wait in line, and it feels like we have the whole beach to ourselves. We can dress the kids in shorts and t-shirts for the beach and not worry about getting sunburned but still be warm enough to splash in the waves and dig in the sand. It's ideal and we will definitely be back!

Everything you need and Clean!

  • 5 of 5

Our family has used VRBO for several beach vacations and by far this one has been the most pleasant. The house has everything you would need or want at your disposal. Most of all it was clean - something that even our teenage children commented on. The owners were a delight - we will cherish our ornament for years to come. Hoping to get back soon to the Porpoise!
