Beautiful Waterfront 2 Vacation Homes as One. On Great Pond in Wellfleet

Bedrooms 4
Half Baths1
Space 3,000 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

Summer: 2 houses as one. 4 bedrooms. Off Season: 1 house. 2-3 bedrooms.

This home offers some unique rental opportunities. The first is to stay in the heart of The National Seashore on one of the most beautiful of Wellfleet’s pristine kettle ponds.

The compound sits on a knoll above your own private beach on Great Pond-- pristine, freshwater, sandy bottomed, warm and swimmable in the Cape Cod National Seashore. It is surrounded by pine forest and is just a few steps down to the pond. It is within walking distance to the ocean (about 1 mile).

The second is to spend a summer week in this lovely home. This wonderful “two vacation homes as one" is available to rent in its entirety for any week May through October. It is a perfect vacation spot for a large family, two families or a multigenerational family gathering. We call the original cottage the “Summer Side” and the newer house the” Big House”. There are 2 homes connected by a hallway creating two fully equipped vacation homes in one. One side is the original cottage. The other side is a newer, insulated and heated house.

Third, in the off season (November thru May), is to stay in the insulated, heated house that can be rented as a 2 or 3 bedroom house. The price is about $200- $250 per night in the off season. This lovely home is only one of three that are available to rent on Great Pond in the summer and the only one available to rent in the off season.

Call or email owner for details on availability and cost.

The Summer Side is the original cottage and the Big House was added on in the 80’s. There is a total of 4 bedrooms, 2 and ½ bathrooms, 2 kitchens, 2 living rooms, multiple decks off living rooms and bed rooms and a huge screened porch. There is lots of space for privacy or communal gatherings. It feels like that magical place where sky and water touch. For those who love to swim, this home is a paradise. A new wooden stairway leads directly to the cottage's private sandy swimming beach: ideal for swimming, sailing, canoeing, windsurfing and kayaking. The pond is about 1/3 mile across and many folks “swim laps” daily. There is a kayak, a canoe, and an inflated rubber boat for you to enjoy. Also, there is a raft that is anchored about 40 feet from the shore which is a fun place for kids to play and adults to sunbath.

The Summer Side was originally built in the 1920s as a Girl Scout camp. It is the original cottage that is now connected to the Big House. It is closed up in the off season because it isn’t insulated. It has been renovated and expanded through the years by its owners. It is now a semi-detached 2 bedroom cottage. It is more rustic than the Big House as the only shower is outside and there is no land line or TV. There is wireless internet. The light-filled Queen master- bedroom has glass sliders on two sides leading to a private deck that faces the morning sunrise (a favorite place for breakfast, reading, sunbathing or just relaxing). The second bedroom has 2 twin beds. There is a fully equipped kitchen. A new gas log fireplace in the open floor plan living room/dining room/kitchen adds ambiance and heat on cool mornings and evenings. There is a futon in the living room for the occasional guest. A large screened-in porch overlooking the pond runs the entire length of the cottage. It is the perfect spot to have an afternoon nap or a glass of wine and dinner, or read a favorite book in the evening.

The Big House is winterized and has central heat. There are more amenities here such as a satellite TV and DVD player, internet, land line and washer/dryer. There are 2 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms (one with tub/shower and one with shower), fully equipped kitchen, separate dining room and living room with gas log heater/fireplace. The king bed master bedroom has an en suite bathroom. There are sliding doors that open onto a private deck. The second bedroom has 2 twin beds. The sun filled living room has sliding doors across the entire pond side that open onto a large deck. The dining room has wonderful views of the pond from three sides. You almost feel as if you are outside when you sit at the dining room table any season of the year.

All of the benefits of Wellfleet (fine dining, fascinating art galleries, unique shops for clothing and jewelry, Bayside sunsets, clamming, miniature golf, iconic drive-in and flea market, nature walks, bike trails and ocean swimming) are within 10 minutes by car or bicycle from this lovely home yet it remains a quiet place of rest and renewal. After a busy day of ocean swimming or biking or gallery-hopping, it's always special to return to the serenity of Great Pond.

The off season has many wonderful aspects to offer as well. There are always a few restaurants open as they rotate closing dates. You can enjoy Bayside sunsets and pond side sunrises. Beautiful nature walks in the woods or bay or ocean, are within 10 minutes by car or bicycle from this lovely home. Curl up by the fireplace with a good book and a cup of hot chocolate and enjoy a peaceful day by the pond.

Please call or email owner with questions.

About Tammy Colvin

My brother and I grew up spending summers in this cottage when it was just one room and had no electricity or running water. We swam and sailed in the pond all day or played on the sandy beach or in the pine woods. It was a wonderful way to spend childhood summers.

Tammy Colvin purchased this house in 1950

Why Tammy Colvin chose Cape Cod

My great grandfather was the Methodist Minister in Wellfleet. It has been a family gathering spot for 4 generations.

What makes this house unique

Because there are 2 houses connected by a hallway, there are lots of private areas as well as communal areas. The screened in porch is one of the unique features of the Summer Side. It extends across one entire side of the cottage. It overlooks the pond and is surrounded by pine trees. There is a picnic table for dining on, comfortable chairs for reading in and a couch for napping. On warm nights it's a wonderful place for reading and visiting.

The Big House has the tv and the big living room to gather in the evenings.

Wellfleet wonderland

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I, together with our three grown kids and a couple significant others, spent Memorial Day weekend here. It's really hard to overstate how lovely a property this is. All but one bedroom have magnificent views of the pond, and there are tremendous views as well from three separate decks, a screened porch, and the dining area. The house wasextremely well-appointed and made cooking fun and clean-up easy. (Evening mosquitoes do make grilling a bit of a challenge, however.) Our hostess was easy to reach and very accommodating. We have rented for several decades in Wellfleet, and this property was a real find. We hope to return.

Paradise Tucked Away..

After having rented in Wellfleet for the past several years with two of my college girlfriends, and our kids ages 8-16, we finally have found the perfect space for us! We wanted to be on one of the beautiful kettle ponds and in close proximity to the pristine beaches in Wellfleet. My three boys and I stayed on the Summer Side of the property which afforded me the space and privacy needed to feed hungry kids and put them to bed on our schedule. The house was neat and clean upon arrival and had all the amenities, and more, that were needed for my family. The Queen room had a breathtaking view of the pond and to wake up to the sunrise as well as to be able to watch the moon rise over the water was truly my favorite times of the day. I also had a private deck off my bedroom where I was able to read quietly or to have my morning coffee with my friends. In addition to this deck there is a very large screened in porch with a few sitting areas and a picnic table. We enjoyed breakfast here, having evening cocktails, playing cards with the kids and my teenage son even slept out there a few nights. It was cozy and comfortable, just the perfect space for the four of us. On the Big Side of the property was where my friends stayed with their teenagers. The kitchen was large and open and we were able to cook for our group without stepping on each other's toes and being able to serve the meals in the bright, open dining room with a fabulous view was a treat. There is a large living room with a piano, which we used almost on a nightly basis. My friend and her children are all accomplished musicians so we had a ball singing along with their guitars. Such great memory makers for us and the kids! Both bedrooms on this side had their own bathrooms and the front bedroom was very large, surrounded by windows which again looked out on Great Pond and the surrounding woods. Again, there is a private deck off this bedroom as well. Great Pond is clean, serene and a beautiful spot to vacation at. Some days we never even made it to the beach because we had everything we could ever want on Great Pond. You can walk the fire roads that are in the surrounding woods and swim in some of the other kettle ponds, Dyer Pond and Long Pond are a short walk away. We all agreed that this house is true paradise in every sense of the word and we hope to be able to return for many years to come!

Wow! What an amazing property. Our party consisted of 4 people (3 adults and one preteen). Three of us stayed in the Big House with the 3rd adult in the Summer Side Cottage. The property allows for each side to have adequate privacy while also being able to enjoy the shared spaces. The beauty, quiet and tranquility of these homes is something very special. The homes are set in the woods with a gorgeous pond just a stairwell away. We rarely left except when we had to fetch groceries or dinner since we were living in paradise. The Big House was comfortable with a well stocked kitchen. The benefit of renting both sides is the cottage is also well-stocked and between the two kitchens, we were able to make more than due. The house has DSL internet and is equipped with satellite TV (if that is your thing). We brought a DVD Blu Ray player with us (for the preteen) and we were glad we did since the TV has basic channels. The Big House's decor is dated and it is immaculate which makes up for some of the dated feel. Dealing with the owner was delightful. She was easy to work with, was responsive to our inquiries and made our stay just delightful. After we stayed in the Big House, She sought feedback from us and from our suggestions she bought new knives for the kitchen and a new comfy chair for the living room. The owners clearly cares about making their home comfortable so that people can have an enjoyable, pleasant and memorable vacation and that is really appreciated.

There is something for everyone in Wellfleet no matter what the season.

Wellfleet is an quaint, old (it's 250 birthday celebration was in 2013), charming fishing village.

There are two famous spots to visit. The Beachcomber Bar and Restaurant is one of the most unusual and famous ocean side bars on the East coast. It is housed in what used to be the Cahoon's Hollow Life Saving Station. .And the Wellfleet drive-in is one of a few remaining working drive-in's in America. Besides great movies (usually double features), there is also a fun flea market there in the summer where you can find antique treasures, discount clothing and bargains of every kind.

There are wonderful sea food restaurants some with harbor views. There are shops and art galleries galore.

You can swim in pristine kettle ponds, body or board surf in the ocean or sail in the bay. You can ride your bike on the bike trail or on sand roads through the woods. Or you can just sit and read on the beach.

In the off season you can walk the ocean beach and only see waves and birds. You can look out over Great Pond and know you are the only folks there. You can drive to Orleans in 20 minutes because there is no traffic. You can enjoy restaurants with out lines to get in. You can read a book by the fire.

Yes, there is something for everyone in Wellfleet.
