A private home with stunning new pool in one of the most beautiful settings in Puerto Morelos. A stay in our two story Beach House offers “the best of all possible worlds”
Combining a 'traditional' Mayan Palapa with a modern Adobe home, great snorkeling and swimming with easy beach access. Large front sundeck and back terrace deck with heavenly outdoor shower and gorgeous completely private pool.
We are located in the town of Puerto Morelos, only twenty minutes south of Cancun and ten minutes from the main highway leading to historic Mayan sites, popular tourist attractions and modern shopping and dining.
The upstairs 'Palapa' has a twenty-foot high thatched peaked ceiling with varnished wood beams and tiled floors, a king size bed and hammocks, a private bathroom and two outdoor sundecks – one facing the ocean where you can sunbathe and enjoy the Caribbean breezes – fabulous sunsets over the jungle from the back terrace. You can watch the sun rise from your upstairs bed or luxuriate in an invigorating outdoor shower surrounded by palms and bamboo trees.
The town plaza of Puerto Morelos is only five minutes by car, taxi, an easy bike ride or a twenty-minute leisurely walk along the beach. Puerto Morelos, a small unassuming town with all the conveniences you could desire and no tourist congestion, boasts fine restaurants, a pizza parlor, cafés, a playground, church, beaches, a grocery store, a bookstore, a travel agency, and a dive shop (if you decide not to snorkel from the beach in front of the Palapa) and once a week an outdoor fresh produce market.
You can also sun and shop and play in Cancun or Playa del Carmen or tour the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, Coba and Tulum. The entire coast (the Mayan Riviera) is one long stretch of beautiful beaches, cabanas, and ecological environmental parks where you can horseback ride, swim in ceynotes and underground caves and visit the historical Mayan Ruins. Taxis are plentiful and reasonable for trips up and down the coast. There are also tour buses to various Mayan sites that can be booked in Puerto.
The biggest problem? You'll never want to leave!!

Hola, Buenes Dias Colleen,
Sadly, we are home now.
Nosotros gusto Mexico y Puerto Morales y La Palapa muy buen.
Muchios grachias para una casa bonita y jardin. (apprendo espanol-----Elaine, pero para ahora esta pequeno. Losciento!).
Your house is wonderful, 'fantastico'. Very comfortable and relaxing. Wonderful setting. We ate at David Lau's restaurant most evenings and met the lovely 'Valerie'. She fixed us up with snorkelling for the terrified, with 'Charlie Brown'. He was superb and we were amazed to find ourselves in the open seas, swimming with confidence!
We loved Tulum, Isla Mujeres, Uxmal and the art of Diego Rivera and Friedo Kahlo in Mexico City. Yes, Merida was 'mucho calor' and we did find Chichen Itza very touristy.
Yes, we had a wonderful time. Mexican people are so friendly. Everywhere we went we were met with warmth & courtesy. I was pleasently surprised by Mexico City. I had grown up with an image of congestion & pollution from the 70's. It was actually a much more comfortable city to visit than London, with a fantastic Metro system, clean streets & a brilliant one way traffic system in the centre. Highlights for us were the Museo de Belles Artes, the whole Coyoacan area, tracking down Rivera murals & our trip out to Teotihuacan.
We would love to return next year and wondered if there is ever a cooler time of year? John will probably be retiring in the summer, so we will have more flexibility with our travel dates. There is still much we would like to see, eg Palanque & it would be great to end the trip with a another relaxing stay at La Palapa.
Elaine & John
Our last minute getaway idea led us to discover this lovely private home just steps away from the sea near a lovely fishing village - a colourful, cultural, Mexican pueblo.
The photos are exactly what you will get when staying at La Palapa - immaculate cleanliness, authenticity, privacy, culture and comfort. The owners of this house follow through on their every promise and go well beyond what you would expect from owners of a vacation rental. They are not just renting 'a house', they are sharing their home with you and you feel that connection from the moment they meet you until the day you have to go.
You will have everything that you need at La Palapa. Having a house and property all to yourself is the ultimate indulgence and the price of this one is amazing for all that you get! Most of all, the owners will quickly feel like friends with all of their advice, their knowledge of the area, their attentiveness to your needs and their respect for your privacy. They are there when you need them and when you don't, there is comfort in knowing you have friends in a new town.
The pueblo of Puerto Morelos is a refreshing dab of small town culture even though it's proximity to overpopulated tourist destinations is close. The town remains colourful, safe and friendly and it's tourists are happy to encounter the convenience of English-speaking locals and businesses, comfort foods, exotic foods, icy cold beer and the freshest fruit drinks.
You will find the nearest lunch and cold beer only a short stroll down the beach. A little farther and there is a huge selection of fine restaurants, breezy beach bars and free entertainment. We were honoured to have been able to enjoy authentic Flamenco music and dance, talented street performers, artisans lining the town plaza with their beautiful hand made arts, local bands playing both Mexican and American favourites and the smell of rich coffee in the morning.
I write this review on day 7 of 10...from the poolside of La Palapa because I just couldn't wait to express my happiness with this house. I was afraid that once I saw the snow again, I would forget the feeling of the sea breeze and beauty of these private gardens.
Not only is this pueblo a 'must see' but this house and it's owners an absolute pleasure. Thank you, Nora and Colleen.
Our family of 6, including three twenty something year olds, visited the palapa over Christmas week. The house is very well equipped - we found everything that we could need (including spices, condiments, and bottled water) and large enough that everyone was able to find a spot to call their own. The architectural elements of the house are stunning - the palapa roof, the pine posts, and the backyard, particularly in the evening. We loved having the pool and the outdoor showers were a real hit!
Despite being the height of tourist season, Puerto Morelos is a laid back place without the feel of being overly commercial. In our opinion, the best feature of the town is the offshore reef and it was easy to find a guide (required for the marine park) for US$25 per person.
The town is an easy walk away, either by road or along the beach. You can also walk up to Desire Pearl where there is a taxi stand directly across from the resort. We quickly learned that taking a taxi to the palapa from town confused many taxi drivers and that the best remedy was to direct them to the puerto principale UNAM. We were also grateful to Nora for telling us the appropriate fare.
The owners, Colleen and Nora, were fantastic to deal with. Colleen was our main contact and was quick and helpful with her responses to any questions. Nora was there to greet us and show us around upon our very late arrival (we used Canada Transfers for transportation and the driver got very, very lost - thankfully, Colleen phoned to find out where we were).
The property is well cared for and maintained; a lot of thought and care has gone into making the home comfortable and welcoming. You could very easily have a wonderful holiday without ever leaving the palapa.
This was our second trip to La Palapa and was a little longer stay than our first trip last April.
Again the trip was fantastic with the pool and yard being the best part. Colleen and Nora have made some fantastic changes in the house since our last trip. Lots of work inside and outside.
Weather was good and trips into town great. We are getting to know the town much better and are still finding new restaurants to try.
We met Phillipe down the road who runs a taxi so we only had to walk across the street to jump a cab and if he wasn't home, a short walk to the Desire Pearl to catch one there.
One day in town we saw they are starting a once a month recycle plan which we think is great and necessary. It has always been difficult to throw away the recyclable items while there and now we know that is about to change.
Thanks ladies for another wonderful trip. Like we said, the second visit was a good as the first.
We arrived at the property mid July 2016 and we were pleasantly surprised to have owners Collene and Nora waiting for us. They showed us the property and even showed us around town. We were there for 10 days and every day was relaxing and memorable. The property is very private except for the construction that was occurring next door. We were surprised while walking on the beach with the Adults Only nude resort that was down the beach. People are totally nude and relaxed. (FYI if you have kids with you) The house keeper did come in three times during our stay as well as the pool guy. The property is very welled maintained and comfortable. There are plenty of fans that makes the heat very bearable. The upstairs balcony is excellent for relaxing on the hammock. The two refrigerators are excellent to stock food, refreshments and leftovers. The kitchen is very well stocked and comfortable. The town is a about 15 to 20 minutes walking and less if you rent bicycles. This was a perfect getaway for two. I also recommend the Colibis Spa. The 2 1/2 hour treatment was amazing. I highly recommend it. Be careful when driving because the signage is limited and there are no access entrances to the highway. Once again thanks to Collene and Nora for the wonderful memories. You have created a home not just a house.
We stayed at La Palapa in April 2016. We took Canada Transfer from the airport and they gave us a complimentary 15 minutes stop for a few groceries to deal with the arrival day.
We arrived to a beautiful home and a beautiful yard. We were greeted by Carmen and then Colleen, and familiarized with the workings of the house. Our holiday quickly began that afternoon.
The house is large, with plenty of ceiling fans and moveable fans as well. We got better at pushing the hot air out of the house as the week went on.
The main floor bedroom has air conditioning and locks so that is where we slept and kept our belongings. I think at the cooler times of the year, sleeping upstairs with the beautiful views and wrap around deck would be fabulous.
The front gate is very secure and we felt very safe and comfortable right away.
The backyard has a very clean, beautiful pool which we enjoyed immensely. There is wonderful greenery in the backyard and we loved all the different animals that visited throughout the week, especially the very colorful birds. The little gecko living in one of the conch shells was better than tv.
We never turned the tv on but there is a nice flat screen tv to watch if you need.
We definitely utilized the outdoor shower on the upper level. Was daring but wonderful.
We cooked more at the house than we thought we would, enjoyed getting familiar with the charcoal grilling.
The walk on the beach ( across the road)to town is twenty five minutes at a casual pace. We went in a couple mornings to enjoy a wonderful variety of eggs at El Nicho restaurant. A must try! Opens at 7:30am and is busy quickly.
You can also walk the road to town, which has plenty of shade and is a nice walk as well.
It was $50 peso to town from the Pearl Desire Hotel, just down the road from the house. We usually walked unless we had groceries.
Carmen came mid week to do a change of bedding and clean the house. She worked extremely hard and went above and beyond what we needed. We enjoyed a nice chat with her using the itranslate on the ipad,
Carlos came by twice to balance the pool and it sparkled throughout the week.
Would we go back? Yes, we are currently looking at what our next dates will be. This is our first time renting a private house versus an all inclusive hotel and it was great.
We thank Colleen for being so good to us and opening her home for us to relax and enjoy.
We had a great time at La Palapa. The house is spacious and it's well equipped. We were three adults and 2 kids. The pool was a major plus for us. The Caribbean tends to be very windy, so it was nice to be able to lounge in the back yard, around the pool, while the kids played in it. The house it's in the outskirts of Puerto Morelos, so it's very quiet (which we love.) Puerto Morelos is a small town but quite active. We went there for breakfast one day and ice cream one night and it was fine. The only con I found at our stay was the lack of AC (I'm a hippie at heart and 20 years ago I wouldn't have minded. I guess I'm getting old :). The house has a very large living/dining/bed area that has many fans but some times the heat was too much even with the fans. There's 1 bedroom on the first floor with AC (one of us slept there, of course). The top of the house (in my view, the highlight of the house) is a large room with a tall ceiling and two floor fans. For a lot of people that could be enough, but for us some nights the heat was uncomfortable and the mosquitoes killed us (despite the fans, a net over the bed and the repellents that the owner provided.) Other than that, this place is perfect. We would definitely return, but on the cooler months of the year. The owner is reachable at any time, quick to respond, and helpful.
We are in a quiet residential area - 5 minutes by car or bike from the town plaza of Puerto Morelos and a 20 minute walk on the beach to town.
