About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 3 Baths (Sleeps 6-8)

Sunbathe with privacy on the rooftop terrace and cool down in the newly built pool with its treetop view of the mangrove jungle. Casa Perros Afortunados (House of the Lucky Dogs) is a newly refurbished 2,500 sf private vacation rental house in the quaint fishing village of Puerto Morelos, Q.R., Mexico just 25 minutes from the Cancun airport. A short stroll to the beach or a four minute walk to the restaurants and shops around the town square. The house has three bedrooms and three bathrooms. Two of the bedrooms are identical master suites on the second floor, each with high quality king-sized beds, full bathrooms, and large balconies. The fully-equipped kitchen is large with peninsula seating, and includes a five burner gas stove with griddle. The second floor also features a Media Room with a 47 inch LCD TV with Dish satellite service, DVD / VHS player, an VOIP telephone for free calls to the USA or Canada, and new comfortable lounge seating. The third bedroom, on the main floor, has one queen bed, large windows, a 42 inch plasma TV, and an adjacent full bath. A covered patio overlooks the rear garden and includes an outdoor ping pong table. Enjoy sunsets over the jungle from the pool or the new covered terrace rooftop lounge with Moroccan lighting and wet bar. Stairs up from the roof lead to a large new observation deck, with a stunning 360 degree view. Watch the waves break over the coral reef or the jungle birds over the mangroves. See the sun rise from the Caribbean sea or set into the jungle. Puerto Morelos offers an amazing array of activities: dive or snorkel along the pristine coral reef (a protected national park and part of the world's second largest coral reef), sport fishing in the Caribbean, massages, biking, golfing, beautiful underground cenotes with crystal clear water, or short drives to shopping and nightlife in Cancun or Playa del Carmen.

About Owner / Property Manager

My wife and I relocated to the Yucatan in 2010 from San Francisco, CA. We purchased a 200 year old Spanish colonial home in the historic central district of Merida. While out exploring the peninsula's Mayan ruins, cenotes, and beautiful Caribbean waters for snorkeling we came upon the wonderful and lovely seaside town of Puerto Morelos. We fell in love immediately and bought a 2nd home. After several months of updating and renovations we are ready to invite vacationers to come discover the beauty, tranquility, and adventure of an authentic Mexican experience in this charming fishing village.

Owner / Property Manager purchased this house in 2012

Why Owner / Property Manager chose Puerto Morelos

When searching for our vacation home on the Mayan Riviera, we considered both what we wanted in the location, as well as what we did not want. Of course we needed walking access to the beautiful blue Caribbean water. We also wanted easy access to the Cancun Airport to make it an easy trip for visitors. We wanted an authentic Mexican experience, where you know you're in Mexico, and not surrounded by predictable glass and steel high-rise resorts that could be on a beach anywhere. We wanted a small location with the colorful and interesting experience of having locals as neighbors. Where we could easily walk to cool cafes, restaurants, diving and snorkeling, and local Mayan markets.

What makes this house unique

We found all that and more in Puerto Morelos. A seaside fishing village perched between a stunning reef-protected beach and mangrove jungle, both beautiful features that prevent excessive growth of the town. Yet it's just a 25 minute drive to the Cancun international airport. So with privacy as a main objective, we chose a recently built two story house a block and a half off the beach, and just two blocks to the shops and restaurants around the main square. Close enough to stroll easily to either, yet set just far enough away for privacy. Then to enhance the experience, we built up the top of the house, adding a rooftop observation deck with our own large terrace and pool for complete privacy and a 360 degree view that includes the ocean reef, the lighthouse, the coco palm treetops and the mangrove jungle. Inside, we have upgraded the decor, kitchen, WiFi, music systems, etc. to provide modern luxuries. We are proud of what we have accomplished. We love our time here and invite you to enjoy it as well.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had such an amazing time staying in Russ & Leanna's stunning Puerto Morelos home. Everything was perfect: clean, organized and beautifully decorated. In addition, Russ, Leanna & Lucio were very kind and helpful. Thank you both for everything - I hope to stay again one day!

The perfect location for your stay in paradise.

  • 5 of 5

We were a group of 6 and enjoyed our stay in the house. We were impressed with how well stocked The kitchen was. On hot days we found a dip in the pool very refreshing. There were also many great books on the area. Evenings on the roof lounge area were enjoyed often with music over the speakers and a refrigerator very handy for cold drinks. The rooster next door even provides 2-3 wake up calls at no extra charge. The family that manages things was wonderful. We would certainly recommend this place.

Owner's Response: We are so glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay. Thanks for taking the time to highlight the features you enjoyed. As for the rooster he loves the sunrises over the Caribbean and doesn't want anyone to miss out.

Wonderful week in PM

  • 4 of 5

We had a great week staying in this house. It rained 3 of the days we were there so we spent quite a bit of time in the house those days. There were plenty of games, books, and other things to do. We did have am issue with the Wi-Fi that wasn't fixed while we were there so I took 1 star off for that. The location is great for walking to the square or the beach. We felt safe everywhere we went. No need for a car while stay in PM.

Clean and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

Nice home with a good location close to the several restaurants downtown. Everything is within walking distance of the home. Owners were very helpful in suggesting good restaurants and tours. I would stay here again if we come back to Puerto Morelos.

More adventurous than "relatively safe", but a very nice place

  • 3 of 5

It was not quite what we were expecting for safety, but we got used to it. For Americans traveling to Mexico this is not as safe as advertised. Also, the house manager came into the house unplanned and unannounced almost every day, which was not the privacy we were looking for on our honeymoon. I really did like the house and if it was more of what I expected or if we hadn't gone to a better place after I would have been more excited.

Despite this, the house is beautiful and very well kept.

Owner's Response: First off we want to thank you choosing our home for the time you spent on your honeymoon in Puerto Morelos. To be honest, we've become accustomed to opening up the new reviews posted and reading high praise of the town and of our house. In five years of sharing our house we have had about 50 reviews, mostly 5 stars, a few 4 stars, but never a 3 star or lower. So we were very concerned and disappointed to see that you were not as pleased as our other guests. We do appreciate and value your candid comments because we want to continue to offer a nice experience to travelers. When you say it wasn't as safe as advertised...does this refer to the town or the house? We have never had a guest robbed or accosted. Puerto Morelos is small, friendly and charming, with a lower crime rate than most cities in the USA so we are puzzled by your comment that for Americans it is not as safe as advertised. We have always found the locals to be friendly, welcoming and definitely not threatening. The house itself is set back with a gated garden, the property enclosed with walls, and all the windows and doors easily secured. The pool and bar lounge area on the roof is very secure and private and can only be accessed through the house. Our wonderful Mayan house manager Lucio does come by to service the rooftop pool and check to see if guests are comfortable and have everything they need. Or give them any information on picking up groceries , restaurant recommendations or how to get a snorkel boat etc. He tries to be helpful but inobtrusive. He will never enter the house without knocking and calling out "Buenas Días" loudly before entering. If this was not the case on your visit please give us any specifics you can. He has managed the house for us since the beginning and has always recognized that people are on vacation and value their privacy. We have spoken to him about your experience and comments and he was surprised to hear them. He mentioned that he was grateful for your generous tip and asked that we thank you for that. We truly to regret you had concerns with the safety of Puerto Morelos and any light you can shed on that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you again for taking the time to write the review and most of all congratulations on your marriage. May you have many memorable travels in the coming years. Life's an adventure!

Great Once Again!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second year at this great house in Puerto Morelos. Everything I stated last year held true this year as well. It was a great house for sharing, was a very good value with so many extras including the rooftop pool, etc. Location is fantastic for going to the beach, transportation anywhere such as Cancun or Playa del Carmen and close to restaurants and bars. Russ and Lucio are very prompt at responding to any issues you may have (which are few to none). Love Love Love.
