This log cabin was built in 1932 as a restaurant. It still has some of the original birch tables and benches. It is located 5 miles from the trail head to most of the the Adirondack High Peaks. It also only a 5 minute drive to the center of Lake Placid. It is a beautiful building with an open deck and a screened in porch. Step off the back of the property and you experience a beautiful view of the Adirondack Mountains. Great base camp for hiking or for a place to get a taste of the Adirondack flavor.

About The Owner

Have lived in Lake Placid all my life. I own a bed and breakfast inside the village. When my work load lets up, I like to hike or ski and a good book is a great way to relax.

The Owner purchased this cabin in 1959

Why The Owner chose Lake Placid

This cabin has been in my family forever. My dad would only let family use it but after he passed away, we found that we needed to rent it to maintain it. All the rental fees go right back into the cabin.

What makes this cabin unique

The cabin is located outside of Lake Placid but is still close to town. Besides the hiking nearby, there is also a golf course, fishing and many miles of biking. There is so much to do around Lake Placid. This cabin is very much into the loop of activites.

Fantastic.

A perfect Lake Placid Cabin! The owner has literally thought of everything you could possibly need. Just bring your family! We were looking to book it again in November, but it must be closed during the winter months. We will look to book it again when it re-opens!

Very Special

  • 5 of 5

This place is unique. My husband refused to join the family for any outings as he felt completely satisfied at The Old Wheel. We loved the living room and the photos do no justice in translating how grand it is. Thank you, so much for sharing your home.

The perfect choice.

  • 5 of 5

There is so much to say about how wonderful this cabin is and so few ways to say it effectively. Perfect location (yes, it's on a main highway but that highway takes you to SO MANY amazing places), perfect amenities, perfect views, perfect ambiance. My family and I had everything we needed here and wanted for nothing. Easy drives to Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, Keene, Wilmington, Jay, Tupper Lake, Whiteface, Ausable Chasm, Olympic attractions, etc., and boundless outdoor recreation opportunities whether it be fishing, hiking, running, kayaking, boating, swimming, skiing, skating, snowboarding....you name it. The cabin is centrally located in the middle of the High Peaks right up the road from the Adirondack Loj and the rustic nature of the cabin, its décor, and all it's furnishings and amenities make you feel like you're really living the ADK life. Wifi is included but there's no TV so you'll be spending time with family/friends by the campfire, soaking up the AMAZING views out the back of the property, or just hanging out enjoying the cabin at night. This cabin truly is the perfect base camp no matter what you'll be doing in the High Peaks Region of the Adirondacks and I can't recommend it highly enough. Thank you to the owners for sharing this amazing piece of Adirondack history with the rest of us!! My family and I will most certainly be back.

Owner's Response: Thank you, you captured exactly what we are trying to do. When my dad passed away, we found it necessary to start renting the cabin out so we keep up on the maintenance. The cabin is approaching 85 years old and we feel very fortunate to be able to have it still in our family.

Perfect ADK location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed 3 nights at the end of June 2017 to hike the high peaks and loved every element of the cabin. It is spacious, has everything you would need to cook and hang out, the beds were very comfortable, and the entire place was clean and ready upon our arrival. The location was excellent for us as it's in between Lake Placid and the Adirondack Loj trail heads, so we were just minutes from the trail and minutes from dinner and all the amenities in Lake Placid. The cabin has a lot of character, which added to the experience. We'll definitely be back!

Perfect ADK cabin!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here for the week. The cabin is exactly as it looks in the pictures only better! It had the perfect ADK feel we were looking for. It has everything you would need at home except food. You don't need to bring linens, kitchenware, nothing. The screened in porch and open deck are great for enjoying an outdoor dinner. The outdoor fireplace was so relaxing in the evenings after a long day of hiking high peaks and kayaking. The cabin is very close to either Lake Placid or Keene. The only drawback, and I mean only, is that it sits fairly close to Rt. 73 which is a main road between Lake Placid and Keene, so there is road noise. This is a minimal inconvenience considering all of the positive things about the cabin. We will be staying here again in the future!

Such An Amazing Place

  • 5 of 5

My family has been going here for 6 years and it still is one of the best areas to be. The cabin is a little hard to find because it is in the woods, but it's really enjoyable (especially with the loft). A bunch of great swimming holes, shops, restaurants, and so much more. It also spots family's with every specific need (nothing is in walking distance though). This is definitely a place to be on your retreat to Lake Placid!
