Overview

About the property

House, 5 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 10)

Built in 1910, the Yeomans Cottage, a craftsman style home, has been a beloved summer home for our family for 85 years and four generations. An architectural gem, this clapboard home with wood floors sits on a 1¼ acre wooded lot with towering trees overlooking the bay. A wrap-around porch and screened dining porch face the water and frame the glorious summer sunsets. The priceless view includes the uninhabited bluffs of Peninsula State Park as well as Horseshoe and Chambers Islands. The old flagstone pathway, built in the 1920s, leads to a stone and wooden dock with private access to Eagle Harbor. Located at the bottom of the bluff, the house feels secluded although it is only ¾ mile from the center of town and a 5-minute drive to the state park, with its miles of bike trails and world-class golf course. However, once you have enjoyed the pleasures of the porch — with a cup of coffee or a cocktail — and taken in the spectacular views, you may never want to leave this comfortable setting.

An enchanting country kitchen boasts a cozy breakfast nook where you can enjoy your breakfast gazing through the large windows into the surrounding woods. Open shelving stores all the dishes and cookware needed to produce meals for a crowd, and a small pantry holds additional appliances and supplies. The screened in dining porch seats 10 comfortably and provides protection from the weather while giving the illusion of being in a tree-house. The adjacent living room faces the bay through a wall of windows. A majestic wood-burning fireplace and a flat-screen TV and DVD player provide warmth and entertainment in the evenings or on a rainy day. Two bedrooms with two twin and one queen bed and a full bath complete the ground floor.

Upstairs is the master bedroom with views overlooking the bay, a king-size bed and adjacent bath. A smaller bedroom with a double bed and two large windows looks down on the side yard and bluff. An adjacent small cottage houses a separate bedroom (queen bed) and bath that open onto the yard. Attached to the cottage is a utility room with washer and dryer.

Access to the private stone beach is via a flagstone path and stone steps. A wooden dock extends into the water, providing easy access for swimming. Kayaks, paddleboats and sailboats are available to rent in downtown Ephraim.

Why Charlie Farwell chose Door County

Our Grandfather purchased this house in 1907 as a family retreat from the hustle and bustle of life in Chicago. Then a full day's drive from the city, it is now just four short hours to the beauty and tranquility of Door County … one of the nation's top vacation destinations.

What makes this house unique

Enjoy a rare opportunity to spend a week or an entire summer in a 100-year old Door County house … it combines the charm of the past with contemporary conveniences. The warmth and character of this unique cottage is perfect for entertaining, sharing with family and friends or simply relaxing. Nestled in the woods and on the shores of Lake Michigan, this vacation retreat radiates peace and tranquility. Whether you are sitting on the porch, admiring the gardens, or sun bathing on the dock, you will be embraced by the magical beauty of nature. This house symbolizes 'the good life' at its very best and will offer you a summer to remember forever.

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a treat! This house is old and that is what makes it charming and unique. It is beautifully maintained and has the luxury of new modern appliances. The front porch has a fabulous view of the bay and the state parks bluffs. We congregated there every evening to watch the amazing sunsets. This home is technically close to the road, but because it is down such a big hill, you do not hear any road noise. The screened in dining porch allows you to hear the birds and watch the late day sun while dining at a lovely handcrafted wooden table with comfy captains chairs. Dinners can go on for hours in this environment. And when you don't want to cook, there are many delicious restaurants within a very short drive, or a lovely walk into downtown Ephraim along the quiet high road. The house is amply stocked with everything you need and the caretakers are thoughtful and have great tips about where to go. Early morning coffee on the dock is a must. We would recommend this home to anyone who appreciates the woods and rustic atmosphere. The beds are comfy too!

Liked it so much, we came back again.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the same property to attend the Egg Harbor Ale Fest last year and this year, and to catch up with friends, visit the local State Parks and try some new places to eat. The property is unique with an interesting history, well appointed (beautiful deck, cozy living room, comfortable bedrooms) and a great view. It's very likely that we'll stay here again.

Wonderful old property

  • 4 of 5

Our family stayed at this lovely cottage, There were 10 of us, parents, grandparents and grandkids from age 1-65. It was wonderful. The old home was charming. There was plenty of room. The beds were comfortable. and the property outside was beautiful. We enjoyed walking to town along the scenic side road. The weather was too cold to swim ( only 3 days in the low to mid 70's) but we did fish and read on the dock. We read and visited on the front porch and were able to play card games on the screened in porch a few times. Every paper product you would need they had-very well stocked.

A highlight was going to eat at Al Johnson's in Sister Bay and seeing the goats on the roof and getting frozen custard at Not Licked Yet in Fish Creek

The cottage's porch and dock- right on the lake, were a perfect place for our group to reconnect.

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time relaxing and reconnecting with our group of friends (9 of us stayed). The house's porch was our favorite hangout. We spent a lot of time there watching the lake and relaxing. Each couple had their own room and we all had plenty of room to spare. One really nice memory was of our last day there having breakfast in the screened in porch. A very cool place with tons of character.

The owners were very responsive and easy to work with. We'd stay here again.

The location on the Green Bay was excellent! Parking was a challenge.

  • 3 of 5

The cottage is 110 years old and represents the early 1900's very well. While the driveway and parking is a challenge it is doable. The owners are easy to work with and the cottage comes well equipped. There are two bathrooms in the cottage and one bathroom in the guest cottage. You must be friendly and share the bathrooms if there are more than three couples. We numbered five retired couples who were on a bike adventure of Door County. Our high expectations were met.

Beautiful View & Rich History

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Yeomans cottage for 2 weeks in August. The cottage is a large old beautiful one, rich with family history and long on great views. The owners clearly love the house and are proud of their family's history. We really enjoyed sitting on the porch watching the boats go by and sun go down. The dock was great and the kids swam every day. We saw 2 bald eagles several times and many other birds including the gray pelicans!

Multiple generations stayed on-and-off during our stay and everyone loved the house. The driveway and stairs are a bit steep, but even my dad (75) managed to navigate the grounds.

While the house is a bit pricey, I will say we never ate in more than this trip as we couldn't breakaway from the view and the swimming. So we saved a bit there - Ha!

Thank you Lesley, Charlie and family for sharing your beautiful family cottage.
