Our four children and Father-in-Law (who lived with us until he passed away at age 96) all enjoy the many faces of the ocean--from calm blue waves lapping on the wide beach to churning whitecaps generated by storms at sea. After vacationing on the beaches of New Jersey as children, we enjoyed our first family reunions on the beaches of Delaware and Virginia which were too crowded for us. We then moved our reunions farther south to the clean, family-friendly beaches of North Carolina. Renting first in Duck for a couple of years, we started moving farther north each year in search of larger homes with more amenities and less crowded beaches. After many years of searching, we found our perfect beach community—Corolla. This community offered some of the nicest homes on the Outer Banks with less traffic and uncrowded beaches because it was literally the “end of the road”. North of Corolla, there is no asphalt road; transportation is by 4 wheel drive vehicles driving on the beach. During our vacations at each of the houses at which we stayed over the years, we made mental notes of features that had worked well for the three generations attending our family reunions. When it was time to build our first beach house, “Castle in the Air”, Bill devoted over 600 hours on a CAD system to incorporate the best features from each of those houses. We understood the importance of addressing the varied needs of individuals during a multi-generational vacation. Children need an area in which to be children and to play without infringing on the private space required by some adults using the vacation to de-stress. Comfortable beds for all, multiple TV’s so everyone can simultaneously watch their favorite shows, a quality sound system for listening to music, a fully-stocked kitchen with an excellent ocean view, a quiet Sun Room overlooking hundreds of acres of an undeveloped Estuarine Sanctuary. Bill satisfied all of these requirements in designing the house after which he
Bill purchased this House in 1995
Why Bill chose Poplar Branch
Following three years of rave reviews by our guests at "Castle in the Air", we decided to build a second, larger home as close to the ocean as federal and state laws would permit. Using the floorplan about which our guests had showered us with compliments at Castle in the Air, we bumped the exterior walls out 3 feet in each direction, adding almost 2000 square feet of living area: a Breakfast Room overlooking the oceanfront pool and the ocean, three master bedroom bathrooms with two person spas overlooking the ocean and an even larger heated, inground, gunite pool—this time with a separate heated baby pool and oceanfront cabana with a private walkway directly to the beach. Again, Patrice chose the interior furnishings and decorated the house with her unique, artistic beach décor that she offers for sale at her Etsy shop, Sea Treasure by Patrice. This larger, oceanfront property we named, “Castle by the Sea”. Designed for multiple generations, this property has also consistently received outstanding reviews by guests—many of whom return year after year to enjoy the upgrades we add to the house during each offseason.
What makes this House unique
Castle by the Sea was designed to accommodate multiple generations. With four master bedroom suites that overlook the ocean and two additional bedrooms on the West side of the house that can easily accommodate two more adults and six children, the house is comfortable for extended family groups. The open kitchen was designed with a center island that serves as a gathering place for the family while the cook has both company and excellent views of the ocean. The library is a favorite of grandparents and those who enjoy a little quiet time while easily participating in all of the family fun. The middle level is for sleeping, and the ground level is for recreation, particularly suited to children, teenagers and men who like to play pool. The pool table overlooks the oceanfront pool, and the cabana from the oceanfront pool opens to a private walkway onto the beach. We make improvements to the property each year. For example, during recent off-seasons, we installed new tile in the kitchen, upgraded two of the bathrooms with new tile, vanity and fixtures. We installed a 65” 4K TV in the raised living area, a 53” HD TV in Master Bedroom 31 and a 40” HD TV in the Game Room. We also repainted the interior of the property and completed a new commercial quality walkway from the oceanfront pool cabana over the dune and onto the beach. In this way, we like to keep our properties current and comfortable for our guests.

The place was very clean! The owner was helpful with any concerns we had!
We loved the ocean views from the balconies. The swimming pool was gorgeous. When we had a problem with air conditioning; the owner sent a contractor right away. We would definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone thinking of staying here.
A lot of room, great location, needs some work and updating
Large house with lots of room, we had 15 people. Large kitchen and eating area made meals convenient. Pool area is good, with a nice sized pool and small wading pool with waterfall. House needs maintenance and updating. Hot tub was broken the bulk of the week we were there. Cleaning was somewhat sloppy, and was still being completed well after check-in time. Lots of sand blown into pool and decks from power washing on day of arrival.
We have consistently received outstanding reviews regarding our responsiveness and the cleanliness of our homes so we feel compelled to respond to this average review. With checkout at 10:00 a.m., our cleaners only have 6 hours to clean 7 bedrooms, 7 baths, 5500 square feet of living space, pool, hot tub, carports and exterior decks before check-in at 4:00 p.m. Maintenance crews must also complete their work within that time.
Despite knowing the check-in time, these guests decided to arrive at 11:00 a.m., parking several vehicles in the carports and driveway, impeding the efforts of maintenance workers and pressuring cleaners to finish early. The owners personally assisted with the cleaning in an effort to expedite the process.
For a property to meet or exceed the expectations of guests, it is very important for those guests to provide cleaners and maintenance personnel with the time they require to do an excellent job.
This is the second time I have done this. We loved the house. It was well stocked with kitchen cooking tools. Kitchen was nice a nd the hoise was very confortable and well decorated I was a little disappointed with the fact that the grill was charcoal only and no gas grill. The pool and hot tube were outstanding. Very nice pool my grandkids had a great time. The beach was great. Very gradual into the ocean. The area was great. Lots of things to do and see.
This is a gem by the sea!! The deck furniture was one of the nicesest we have had at the obx. The beds were decent. Each queen and king (just one on mid level) had something unique and nice about it. There was a nice bathroom by the pool and ocean so you didnt have to go in all the way. It is right by public access which was a slight negative. We came before pool season so the pool will look beautiful but it wasn't ready (as expected). The kitchen was pretty well stocked. There was just one fridge and a small wine fridge downstairs. The owner was very responsive.
Six sisters and spouses joined together here for a week. We had a BLAST! The house was great, pool was exceptional...view of the ocean was awesome! I missed outside stairs between the decks and a direct access to the beach from the pool, however, once we " found our way" it was OK. There was one quirky problem...the ironing board is bolted to the wall in the laundry room AND there is an iron BUT NO OUTLET to plug in the iron!!! We laughed about that and our persnicknity brother in law was the ONLY one put out! All said and done this is a pretty awesome place to spend a week!
Simply wonderful (and better than that for families)
I almost never post online reviews, but feel compelled to do so for Castle by the Sea. I had never been to the Outer Banks - and with twin toddlers and an infant i had serious worries about whether we would all be comfortable at a seaside house. Castle by the Sea was simply perfect for us. It is spacious and smartly laid out. The pool is beautiful. And it simply could not be more accommodating for little people. There is a child-proof gate on the top floor; a nursery with crib and pack-and-play and best of all a kiddie pool attached to the big pool. It made keeping the children safe and happy so easy - which made mom and dad's vacations. And having said all of that - what really matters about Castle by the Sea is it's breathtaking views and direct access to a gorgeous, never crowded (at least while we were there in mid-August) beach.
Anyway, i could go on and on - but bottom line is that it is hard to imagine a better place for a family to spend a week in summer. You can't go wrong with this house.
