My husband and I had a wonderful vacation while staying in this vacation rental! The unit was beautifully decorated and newly remodeled. We couldn't have asked for a nicer place to call home for the 7 days we were able to stay there. John and Deborah were the perfect hosts. Always available if we needed anything or had any questions of where to go and what to see. We enjoyed the dogs in the front yard. They were very friendly and loving. It was like being at home. The unit had all the necessities we needed to prepare our meals. John and Deborah had thought of everything. The bed was so very comfortable. It made sleeping very relaxing. They even had a well written binder for us to read of all their suggestions on how to see the most beautiful beaches and best places while we were there on the northern part of the island. I enjoyed the privacy of the Kohala Ranch area. It is a beautiful and peaceful place to vacation at. The only thing I might suggest to John and Deborah, for people that want to visit this amazing area and never have been here before, is give some good directions of how to find the Kohala Ranch and how to get into the Ranch. When we arrived it was a bit confusing because we had no idea that there were two entrances to get into the ranch. But after we finally figured it out the rest of the time was the most relaxing and amazing time. Thank you for sharing your home and the time you spent sharing with us, John and Deborah! We would love to come back if we ever get back to the big island!
My husband and I stayed in the Suite for about 6 weeks with our golden retriever, Toko. All three of us had an amazing time. Toko had his own fenced in yard and a large lanai with a dog bed! Toko also enjoyed walks around the ranch, where he could smell the ocean! We spent many evenings watching the sunset over the ocean while Toko played with John and Deborah's dogs in the front yard.
John and Deborah were excellent hosts. Not only were they available if we needed anything, but John gave us an excellent tip to get parking at Mauna Kea Beach. Mauna Kea Beach is one of the best beaches on the island, but parking through the resort often fills up before 9AM. Ask John how to always have a spot!
The Suite had everything we needed for a long stay. They really pay attention to details - for example they bought a new convection cooktop and switched out all of our non-compatible pots and pans. I've stayed in rentals that had several pans that would not work on the convection cooktop. This is just one example of their attention to the details.
I highly recommend this rental. We plan on returning!
We have been coming to the Big Island for several years but this vacation was perfect. The ranch is located in the Meadows of Kohala Ranch. Warm sunny days and cool comfortable nights. We lived on the spacious lanai with a 180 degree view of the ocean. The Jr. suite is tastefully decorated and impeccably clean. There is a full kitchen, gas BBQ, laundry facilities and the most comfortable bed. The resorts with their restaurants, beaches and shops are just down the hill. Waimea is a nice sized town town close by with all the necessities: groceries, drugstores, churches, quaint shops and restaurants.
We loved to sit on our lanai and watch the cows roam across the open range. Drive slowly, they also roam in the roads. There are wild turkey and beautiful song birds. The ranch also has 2 horses who love carrots and 2 sweet, well behaved dogs. It was comforting to know if you needed anything the Watsons were there to help and yet they give you your own very private island retreat. This is the perfect vacation spot. The weather, the open spaces, the fantastic accommodations all provided for a relaxing, rejuvenating and down right FUN TIME. WE are going back!!!
I recently spent 10 days here and thoroughly enjoyed my stay. The listing accurately describes the property...it is furnished tastefully and everything is of high quality and spotlessly clean...the owners appear to have anticipated every need. The deck area is enormous and the panoramic views of the ocean and hills are spectacular. I have already recommended it to friends and I would return to this unit on my next visit. The owners, John and Deborah, were very helpful and friendly.
My husband and I spent a month in this lovely suite. I admit that I was worried about staying in a basement suite, but once I saw it, I was blown away! It has been very tastefully decorated and was super-clean but the best part is the huge private deck with ocean view…most unexpected! The deck also looks out over the lawn and paddock, and beyond to the rolling green pastures of Kohala Ranch. The owners, Deborah & John, could not be more accommodating. Very helpful, generous, and lovely people. If you are looking for a different experience from a resort condo, and you would actually like to see how people in Hawaii live, this property is ideal. They alos have a 1 bedroom ohana, in which we spent 3 months, and another 2-bedroom basement suite. All have been decorated in the same, tropical style, with the same attention to cleanliness. It was such a relief to arrive here after travelling and find this santuary awaiting!
I can only rave about our experience at this VRBO! The property is beautiful. The studio is spotless. The view is magnificent. The kitchen is well stocked (SHARP knives! A first in all my years of renting vacation properties). The bed was comfortable. The lanai was huge. The dogs were friendly. If you are not a dog lover, never fear, you can close the gate to your lanai and keep them off. The horses were an added bonus. I bought carrots at the farmer's market and made new friends. We loved looking at the stars at night. They seemed to go on forever.
John and Deb were friendly and generous, but unobtrusive, hosts.
It was beautifully quiet. The Kohala Coast is my favorite part of the island. It's not far into Kawaihae to go to dinner (Cafe Pesto, Blue Dragon) or, during the day, hit the harbor or one of the beautiful nearby beaches. You can take the upper road out of Kohala Ranch and go horseback riding (Paniolo Riding Adventures, Dahana Ranch) or head into Waimea. Continue past Waimea and see the Waipio Valley (you can do that on horseback, too!). You are even close to Hawi. The location can't be beat.
If you are new to the Big Island, keep in mind that this end of the island isn't close to Kona. You are a good 35 minute drive from Kona, so if you are looking for a rental property in town, this isn't it. If you are looking for a beautiful property that is well maintained, convenient to activities, quiet, and sunny, this is your place.
