Far from the hustle and bustle, we're in the countryside where you can still experience Hawaii the way it should be--unspoiled and uncrowded.

But close enough to indulge your tastes in Chinatown, surf on the North Shore or swing in Waikiki when the desire strikes!

About Janis

We live in Michigan and have been coming to Hawaii for years.

Currently, we are both retired but because our grandchildren live in Michigan, we can't live here full-time...or we would! We can only come for about 6 weeks in the winter and so decided to share our Fabulous Condo with others.

Why Janis chose Mākaha

We have been to all the islands numerous times & have stayed in wonderful hotels & time shares. Once we found the Cabanas we knew we had found the Best of the Best! We didn't have to leave in order to do all the activities we love: snorkel, dive, whale watch, beach walking and on & on!

Being in a local area, allows us to skip the crowds unless we want to take the 45 min. drive to see the sights in Waikiki, Honolulu, Pearl Harbor or the North Shore. It's great to be close enough to get to the fine restaurants, shopping & visit the famous attractions and then come back to peace & quiet!

What makes this condo unique

The absolute best part is being on the main floor & just walking out on the virtually private beach. Clean water, trade winds, lapping surf - all in your front 'yard'. It really doesn't get any better than this!

Fantastic 2 Month Stay!

We planned our visit to Janis' main floor condo 16 months in advance, in anticipation of our retirement after 50 years of working. All was exactly as advertised and had everything we needed to set up house keeping for 2 months from Dec 8th till Feb 8th. Loved being on ground floor and able to step directly onto the beach from the lanai. Beach umbrella, chairs, boogie boards, snorkel gear all provided for spending many days on the beach when we weren't exploring the islands. Almost like a private beach and never over crowded, met many very nice local residents and tourists alike strolling in the sand while enjoying the waves coming ashore (some days very big and other days not so much). Sound of waves was also great to go to sleep by. The guest book provided was very informative with a lot of useful info for places to visit in surrounding area. Besides all the major sites on Oahu, we especially enjoyed parking near end of island and walking to the bird sanctuary at the point, a short few minutes drive from condo. Besides albatross we also saw seals resting on shore there, very exciting! The sunsets are fantastic and the conch players each evening made them extra special. This was our first visit to Hawaii and we are happy we found Makaha Beach Cabanas!

A Great Spot

Enjoyed our time(December) at Makaha Condos. Excellent beach right outside the front door - uncrowded. We saw whales breach and swam with turtles and trumpet fish. Condo was as described by owner. Family had a great time playing in the waves, meeting the neighbours, exercising on the beach and travelling around the island. We also loved shopping at the local grocery stores and sampling local foods. The condo is away from the crowds which made this area even more appealing to us.(The area outside the condo does have areas that look rough but we never felt unsafe. I found that it didn't matter where you went on the island you ran into these rough looking areas.) Thank you Janice for sharing your condo we definitely enjoyed it(family didn't want to leave), if we can we would love to come back.

The Location Can Not Be Beat!

This condo is located in my favorite part of Oahu - Makaha. There aren't any pictures that can truly do this area justice, and and with the unit being on the ground floor you can just walk out onto beautiful, quiet Papaoneone Beach. If you have never been, just take my word for it and go there! :)

The condo building is older, but the unit has been renovated. Janis has really furnished this condo nicely, with almost everything you could possibly need, including an extensive selection of books perfect for reading on the beach. One thing of note, however, is the kitchen. The area itself is very narrow and it is the main walkway from the front of the unit to the back, where the lanai and beach are located, and two people can not pass each other in the kitchen. Having said that, the kitchen boasts newer cabinets, counters and appliances and is very well stocked.

There isn't any air conditioning in the condo, but with windows in the front and the back the trade winds make this place cool and comfortable all day long - and that's coming from 2 Canadians who use a/c in the winter!

Onsite laundry facilities, as well as the security and maintenance staff, were excellent and Janis was a pleasure to deal with in all aspects of the transaction.

The reason I gave only 4 stars was to do with some minor maintenance issues that I have been assured would be dealt with, if at all possible, within the next little while (there is an ongoing screen door problem that seems to be impossible to fix). After those items have been completed, this will truly be the vacation rental of your dreams!

The minor maintenance issues you mentioned, one sliding kitchen drawer won't stay shut & the need to replace the frying pans, are easily fixed & will be soon. It's important to get feedback from guests in order to know when something needs fixing or replacing. I hope you return soon!

Quiet and on the Beach

We really enjoyed this condo. It had everything you needed and the bed was very comfortable. It did not have air conditioning and I was very hesitant, but with the tradewinds you did not need it. It was about a 45 minute trip from the airport but we liked it because a lot less people. It is right on the beach and the crashing of waves at night was amazing. I would give it 5 stars but the only downside for us was the locals put up a tent several night in front of our Lanai because they camp and fish all night. They were very quiet but we didn't like to sit out on the Lanai with them right there before bed and when we woke up in the morning. But it is a great find for the money.

Owner's Response: I'm sooo glad that you had a wonderful time staying with us! I agree that it can be disconcerting to people unfamiliar w/Hawaiian culture to find locals camping on the beach. Hawaii, like most other states, says that the ocean or waterways should be accessible to all. To that end, the area from the water up to a certain number of feet, is considered public domain. Oddly, in order to camp overnight, there has to be at least one fishing line in the water. This even applies to resorts and ocean front homes. Fortunately, from my experience, the local campers have always been friendly, clean up their mess & are respectful of our residents. Usually, this happens on holidays, but not always. Thank you for mentioning this, because it gave me the opportunity to explain how this can happen - anywhere! It's easy for me to forget how strange this can feel, because I'm so used to it. Very disapointed!!!

What a nightmare!! We had booked this condo almost a year before we went, It was supposed to be a wonderful and RELAXING holiday for a whole month! A celebration for our 35th wedding anniversary. Imagine our disgust and complete disappointment when we arrived close to midnight after a long day of a two separate flights, we opened the door to a PIG STY! Honestly it was horrible. (I have photos and videos for proof). There was NO way we could stay with the garbage, filth, unmade bed, dishes, food in the fridge, black hairs all over the toilet, it was really very, VERY gross. I am a Realtor and have been in the profession for 25 years, I know what is acceptable and this clearly was not even close.

I did get a hold of Janis and after sending her some photos for proof, her solution was to suggest we pull out the couch and sleep there. REALLY? We couldn't even use the bathroom as it was disgusting! So off we went to find a Hotel which if you do not know the area, there really are not any! We finally did arrive at one at 2:30 am and after paying a couple hundred dollars for a few hours sleep (I have the receipt) we finally got to bed.

Janis promised the Housekeeper would be done by noon the next day. So now with our next day ruined by waiting for the housekeepers to finish (It was early afternoon) we drove around with our luggage and groceries from Costco for quite a few hours. We did arrive back to a clean condo and it did then look similar to the photos posted, (except the housekeeper took most of the towels and we were left with TWO towels for a week before they were returned) Another feature Janis neglects to mention is the horrible smell in the condo, I haven't yet figured where it was coming from and what exactly it is. Also for your enjoyment, there is a yappy small dog in the condo upstairs who loves to bark each time you step out onto the lanai. Not exactly the relaxing vacation!!

Over the next few days we had frustration after frustration, no internet code for our iPad/phones, then the fridge breaks down with a fridge FULL of food, the solution offered by the owner was not satisfactory at all.

After getting to know the locals I guess our experience is NOT the first experience like this for this condo. I love the beach and the people, We would come back to the cabanas but NOT to this one, I am not sure how this unit has a 5 star rating!

Owner's Response: Sadly, it was true that the condo had not been cleaned. Our housekeepers mixed up the dates & thought this guest was arriving the next day. The degree of uncleanliness is irrelevant, because the fact remains that it was not ready for this guest. I had allowed an after hours check-in to accommodate their arrival, thereby making it almost impossible to rectify anything at 1:30 a.m. To say I was horrified & appalled is an understatement. Finding a hotel on the west side of Oahu, in the middle of the night, is very difficult. I suggested, to just get through the night, they sleep on the sofa bed with clean bedding. When it became apparent that would be unacceptable, I said I would refund the cleaning fee for the entire month of $175 + the night’s rental, which more than paid for their hotel. The guest failed to mention this refund. The housekeeper arrived at 8:00am & cleaned the condo. I know personally that there was an entire set of towels for 2 people, plus beach towels and brand new floor mats. Because the condo hadn’t been cleaned, all the towels hadn’t been washed & returned. A full 6 person supply was returned 4 days later. Then, on top of this, the refrigerator breaks & I discovered it was not repairable & had to be replaced. I had a brand, new refrigerator delivered the next day & the old one removed + sent over a cooler & ice. This was nearly a super-human feat, if anyone reading this has ever tried to get next day appliance delivery & pickup from a Home Depot. The guest expected a full refund of all her food. This was a problem that could not have possibly been foreseen, like a power outage. I did refund a portion, but not to her satisfaction. I cannot address any odor as NO ONE has ever complained of this before & the internet code is in large print in the Guest Book. As any traveler knows, occasionally there will be issues. How you know if you have good service, is if there is an immediate response by management. I took full responsibility & responded/fixed/repaired everything in as timely manner as humanly possible. I bent over backwards to make things right & refunded her money for the issues. This guest stayed a month & everything was resolved within the first days. There have been assorted other problems over the years & usually people who travel know occasionally ‘things happen’, and judge us by our immediate response and attentiveness. I take great pride in our 5* reviews and there are 43 other excellent reviews to consider.
