About Janis

We live in Michigan and have been coming to Hawaii for years.

Currently, we are both retired but because our grandchildren live in Michigan, we can't live here full-time...or we would! We can only come for about 6 weeks in the winter and so decided to share our Fabulous Condo with others.

Janis purchased this condo in 2012

Why Janis chose West Oahu

We have been to all the islands numerous times & have stayed in wonderful hotels & time shares. Once we found the Cabanas we knew we had found the Best of the Best! We didn't have to leave in order to do all the activities we love: snorkel, dive, whale watch, beach walking and on & on!

Being in a local area, allows us to skip the crowds unless we want to take the 45 min. drive to see the sights in Waikiki, Honolulu, Pearl Harbor or the North Shore. It's great to be close enough to get to the fine restaurants, shopping & visit the famous attractions and then come back to peace & quiet!

What makes this condo unique

The absolute best part is being on the main floor & just walking out on the virtually private beach. Clean water, trade winds, lapping surf - all in your front 'yard'. It really doesn't get any better than this!

Fantastic 2 Month Stay!

  • 5 of 5

We planned our visit to Janis' main floor condo 16 months in advance, in anticipation of our retirement after 50 years of working. All was exactly as advertised and had everything we needed to set up house keeping for 2 months from Dec 8th till Feb 8th. Loved being on ground floor and able to step directly onto the beach from the lanai. Beach umbrella, chairs, boogie boards, snorkel gear all provided for spending many days on the beach when we weren't exploring the islands. Almost like a private beach and never over crowded, met many very nice local residents and tourists alike strolling in the sand while enjoying the waves coming ashore (some days very big and other days not so much). Sound of waves was also great to go to sleep by. The guest book provided was very informative with a lot of useful info for places to visit in surrounding area. Besides all the major sites on Oahu, we especially enjoyed parking near end of island and walking to the bird sanctuary at the point, a short few minutes drive from condo. Besides albatross we also saw seals resting on shore there, very exciting! The sunsets are fantastic and the conch players each evening made them extra special. This was our first visit to Hawaii and we are happy we found Makaha Beach Cabanas!

The beach is unreal!

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I stayed here from Aug 24-Sept 4 2016.

The view was unbelievable! The pictures don't lie, and the sunset every night was glorious.

We explored the entire island and loved every minute of it. But our favorite place was the beach in front of the cabanas. Even on a "busy" weekend there was maybe 30 people there.

Everyone we met coming and going was very friendly and helpful.

The condo itself was nice and clean, there was everything we could have possibly needed there. Keeping the windows open in the evening cooled the place right off, and while we were there it was in the mid 80's to low 90's. The cabanas have a gated entry and the apartments them selves have another keyed entry, we felt totally safe and comfortable here.

The town of Makaha itself was a total let down, but we didn't care. We liked exploring all over the island. There were no good restaurants close by, only fast food chains (we tried #1 Chinese, foul is the only word to describe it). We found the grocery stores to not be very friendly or cost effective. We decided that we were willing to make the drive to Costco and the stores a bit further down the road. That was fine by us, we could stock up on some supplies and just chill on the beach.

Janis was very friendly and answered all my questions quickly!

We would totally stay here again!

Owner's Response: Thank you! I am so glad you enjoyed your stay! I wish I had known you were having difficulty finding good places to eat. I would have guided you to our Guest Book, where I've listed the 'hidden gems' to eat. There are quite a few, but they are certainly not obvious. One of the best is the local organic farm & café, where you can buy local foods and eat lunch or dinner in their cafe. Their food is all organic, grown on the farm or locally & prepared fresh daily. It is wonderful! There are too many others to list, but every Saturday there is a Farmer's Market to buy local supplies to prepare in the condo + there is a wonderful selection of food vendors to buy lunch or take-out. Also in the Guest Book, I recommend the local grocery that is MUCH less expensive than the chains. Plus, the fishermen sell their fish there in the morning & you can buy some of the freshest fish ever. I eat sooo much ahi when I'm there! It is true that Makaha is small, but if you know where to look, you can find a lot. I hope you have the opportunity to return & give Makaha another go!

Amazing!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I just returned from a 10 day stay in this condo and it was amazing, like a dream come true! The condo had so many extras that we didn't need to buy hardly anything extra when we got there. It was so wonderful to walk out our bedroom and watch sea turtles playing in the surf, or the waves rolling in each day, and the sunset each night from our personal lanai! There is a (we think) unique set of natives that live close who give people watching a fun touch! We really enjoyed watching and listening to the group blow their conk shell blessing at sunset nightly on our beach. There was never a moment when we felt unsafe and slept with the windows and door open nightly. We took walks on the beach and went over to the cliff edge and watched the spray blow up as well. There were families there our age and we were so glad we decided to stay here instead of the much busier beaches & traffic of Honolulu! This was absolutely the perfect spot for us and we hated to leave!

The people of Hawaii are a gracious, spiritual and very family oriented people and we can't wait to visit again! I miss it already!

Janis - the book in the room was so helpful. We went to the Army beach right down the street in Waianae to snorkel one day and it was so calm and nice, I was so glad you mention it in the notes! We also ate locally several times and it was always great! We sat outside on the lanai daily and it was so calming even on the days when the surf was strong. The fans in the room were perfect with the windows and glass door open at night for us. Janis and everyone there were so nice and welcoming.

The Island is amazingly beautiful and pictures don't do it justice. Each area has it's own natural beauty to it and we explored each with our rental car and some hiking. There was so much to do and we tried to do it all and then took time to recoup as well with a glass of wine afterwards on the Lanai. Thank you for sharing your home with us. I wish I was back right now!

amazing stay

  • 5 of 5

perfect condo, fully fitted, right on the beach, a beautiful quiet beach where whales, dolphins, seals and turtles pass by, a few surfers and body boarders.

a nice part of the island, less touristic (but for how long?), maybe not enough nice restaurants but we were not there for that, definitely the place to go if you want to avoid the Waikiki crowd.

amazing stay!

Good place to kickback and relax

  • 4 of 5

Very nice location on the beach. Be aware of where you are going. This is an hour north and west of Honolulu on the dry side of the island. There is one road and can be clogged. This is a perfect place for a go and stay vacation. This part of the island has very limited restaurants or tourist type attractions.

Owner's Response: I'm glad you like our place & enjoyed your stay. I'm surprised you found travel time to Honolulu so difficult - perhaps you went during rush hour? Normally, it takes about 40 min. And, only about 15 minutes is on the 2 lane Farrington Hwy, while the rest is on the 5 lane freeway. All the islands have ocean side roads - ours is lucky to have 2 lanes, Maui only has one lane - talk about traffic! Also, I'm sorry that you didn't see our Guest Book describing local restaurants as well as all the restaurants 15 min. away in the resort area Ko'Olina as well as Kapolei, 5 min. further which has everything from casual to fine dining + all kinds of shopping. There is also the best guide book, "Oahu Revealed" on our book shelf for close by activities as well as the whole island. It is true that we are an hour from Waikiki, nightlife & clubbing. Anyone who is looking for more of a city or tourist experience shouldn't stay on the NW side of the Island. We appeal to those who want more of a get-away and enjoy the slower pace, snorkeling, surfing and just vegging out on the beach. However, most tourist sites are 5 min to a max of 1.5 hrs, if you go to the opposite side of the island. While we are also on a fabulous beach, 5 min away is the famous Makaha Beach where the surfers flock in the winter. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

Map

Makaha is today very much the way it was 100 years ago - before 'civilization' came along and covered Hawaii with 30-story buildings and freeways everywhere. You are totally surrounded by natural beauty at its finest everywhere you look.

Your can enjoy scenic driving, our condo is a 15-minute ride beyond where the freeway ends….you’ll marvel at the lush coastline and fantastic beaches as you ride along. There are mountains to hike, valleys to explore, two local golf courses and every water sport you can imagine. It's the perfect spot for those who would like a rest from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Enjoy the ocean right outside your door. Swim, Snorkel, Scuba, Boogie Board - or take a stroll and enjoy the ancient ruins a short distance from our beach. Surf world famous Makaha Beach, site of international surfing competitions.

Swim and play near the Dolphins in the ocean – it’s a fantastic experience!

Enjoy Whale Watching

[seasonal – November through March]

Fishing/Ocean Kayaking/Boogie Boarding/Surfing/Snorkeling will make this vacation unforgettable!

Golf at the nearby Makaha Golf & Country Club – a 5-minute drive

Historical and Cultural Sites - One of Oahu's oldest Hawaiian heiau (temple) is located here.

Discover secluded beaches along the coast line. Pokai Bay is a favorite and gentle swimming perfect place for keiki [kiddies] and the whole family. Try a delicious “plate lunch” just down the street.

Diamond Head, Waikiki Beach and Pearl Harbor Memorial are less than an hour away.
