About Michelle and Pat O'Brien

My husband and I custom built this mountain home in 2001. We general contracted every step of the way with much attention to detail and structural integrity. My husband is a commercial banker and I work in the schools, so I have the summers off to help maintain and run our VRBO cabin. Our daughters are grown now and work full time, so as a family, we just don't have the chance to use our second home as much as we'd like; so instead of selling, we decided to help cover our carrying costs by signing onto VRBO. It has been a lot of fun meeting so many wonderful families from all over our country and sharing this special part of God's majestic world with them.

Michelle and Pat O'Brien purchased this house in 2001

Why Michelle and Pat O'Brien chose Northwest

We chose Grand Lake and this particular area because it reminded us of Michigan where we grew up. The Sun Valley Lake area is in the Kawuneeche Valley, so the roads back to our cabin are flat, with miles of open space land covered in pines and willows. The water gently flowing down the Colorado River and the numerous lakes/ponds in the area also reminded us of northern Michigan. The main difference is the water is much much colder for jumping in!

What makes this house unique

The main benefits of staying in our cabin is the location, if you are into quietly observing or photographing nature up close, taking nice walks or hikes around our area dotted with small lakes, fishing, or just wading in the Colorado River, this place is for you! If you want a little more action, walk down to the Winding River Resort campground for horseback riding, ATV rentals, petting baby farm animals, or catching your flying pancake hot off the griddle for a Chuck-wagon breakfast experience! They also offer a Cowboy Chapel service down by the Colorado River on Sunday. In just a five minute drive you can be checking out the Kawuneeche Visitor Center as you head up into Rocky Mountain National Park. A few minutes in the other direction, you can be stopping into Grand Lake's Visitor Center, then down into the heart of Grand Lake Village for boat rentals, shopping, golf, live theater, or dining. If you like to cook your meals at home, check out the quaint Mountain Market for fresh produce and an excellent meat market.

Pretty cabin on the quiet side of Rocky Mountain National Park

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5, parents plus 3 (ages 18 - 21), stayed at this lovely home for a week in August 2016. We went with the purpose of seeing Rocky Mountain National Park. The park is beautiful, especially if you can get out of bed early and head to the Alpine Visitors Center before the crowds, you will not be disappointed! This area is within 30 minutes of the house. It is also worth a drive to the other side of the park to do the trail for Bear Lake, Nymph Lake and Emerald Lake as well as Alberta Falls ...all at the same trailhead. However, once we saw the Estes Park side of the park, we were so glad we made the choice to be on the quiet, Grand Lake side of the park! Grand Lake is a beautiful, quaint town on a pretty lake. Estes Park is more like a suburban town in any state. We also rented an atv at On The Trail rentals, literally just around the corner from the house. We had a blast! And ....did I mention the moose? We saw many moose every day. There were a couple of males and a couple of moms and calves. The cabin definitely earned its name of the "Lucky Moose" during our stay!

This cabin also had plenty of beds for all of us to sleep comfortably. The kitchen is well stocked. We also appreciated that there were some spices and other items left in the cabinets and fridge...those items you forget to pick up for a one time use when on vacation. The living area was very comfortable as well. We gathered on a nightly basis to watch the Olympics together in total comfort.

The rental process was very easy and Michelle was very helpful with any questions. We would like to thank the O'Briens for a lovely, memorable stay at their beautiful cabin. We would highly recommend this house to families and couples.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write such a complimentary review. We couldn't agree more with your observations about being on the Grand Lake side vs. Estes. My husband and I grew up in Michigan, and we immediately fell in love with Grand Lake and the quietness of the Kawuneeche Valley; we discovered this area in the early 90's and not much has changed, which is a miracle in this noisy fast paced world. We are glad you found our 'Lucky Moose' cabin true to its name. We also strive to make our guests feel at home with as many convenience amenities as possible while traveling away from your own kitchen and bathrooms. Thank you too for being such considerate guests by leaving the cabin in excellent condition.

We had a tremendous time staying in your cabin. We seen several moose, enjoyed playing games and spending quality family time. Lots of room and family friendly, we hope to plan another visit and we would be very fortunate to rent your cabin again. Your cabin was provided with everything we needed for our week stay, can't thank you enough for a memorable vacation and sharing your cabin with us.

Texas Family

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed your Cabin so much. We arrived about 6:30 p.m. and Moose were right outside the back porch. We enjoyed Moose and a red fox many times a day out the front and the back.

The pictures on your site are exactly what the cabin looks like. Lots of room and very cozy. We cooked many meals, and all things needed were provided. The bikes out back were a plus, we rode to the petting zoo and the Wagon ride one day we were there. Out Texas family will be back. Thank you for sharing your place with us.

Owner's Response: I'm so pleased that the location of our cabin and all the wildlife you were able to see around our place made your trip to Colorado especially special. The Winding River Resort campground offers so many fun things for a family to do. We love that it is nearby, but far enough to not hear the other vacationers.

Beautiful cabin and location!!

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a WONDERFUL stay at this beautiful cabin!! The location was perfect for us - out of town yet very close to RMNP and the town of Grand Lake. The cabin was VERY clean, cozy and comfortable! It was a great place to unwind at the end of the day after exploring the area - which we fell in love with. We saw many moose traffic jams while during our stay in the area; however, we never felt the need to stop for photos as we saw moose daily (morning and night) from the cabin - many times they would walk RIGHT in front of the cabin!!

This cabin and area truly exceeded our expectations!! We had an amazing vacation and hope to return soon!!

Owner's Response: We truly hope you and your family will make another trip back to Grand Lake in the future. Thank you for taking such exceptional care of our home away from home during your stay. We were so pleased that your preferred your stay in the Grand Lake area over the I-70 corridor mountain towns.

The place was wonderful and just what we were hoping for. Our son had brought his boat and there was plenty of parking for two trucks and a large boat. We spent a beautiful day boating on Grand Lake. The area was quiet but the people we saw in the area were friendly. The highlight was all the moose we saw. We were all sitting on the front porch the first night and a moose and her baby came around the side of the cabin and startled us. Moose visited every morning and evening. Wonderful stay!

Amazing Wildlife Viewing and Perfect Location!

  • 5 of 5

My family of four stayed in this home for seven nights and felt right at home! The home had everything we needed - comfortable beds, lots of movies and games, full kitchen, washer/dryer, etc. The location is perfect for exploring Rocky Mountain National Park as well as the beautiful town of Grand Lake. We even drove to Winter Park for a round of disc golf and the alpine slide. My boys were very excited to see the wildlife from the home every day. We saw countless moose, a fox and even a small bear from the porch. Our family made lasting memories there!!

Owner's Response: We are so please your family enjoyed their week in Grand Lake and found our home to be comfortable. Wow, a small bear! That would be a first for us. In all the years we have been going to our cabin, we have heard of bear being in the area, but have never seen one. Glad all the wildlife did not disappoint.
