About Jennifer Sproul Whitesell
Welcome to the Sproul Family Ranch, located in the heart of the beautiful Davis Mountains! The original Sproul Ranch was founded in 1886 by Robert Stuart Sproul. Over 125 year later, the ranch is still a working cattle ranch, owned and operated by the fourth, fifth and sixth generations of Sproul descendants.

A full and happily different experience
We had a beautiful Thanksgiving Week stay at this comfortable property. The locale is remarkably quiet, peaceful and downright gorgeous. Photos do not do this spectacular area justice. We're glad we got to experience personally the ancient, rock-lined canyons in this area, a view which we enjoyed as we sat on the cabin's generous front porch where we shelled part of a recent crop of pecans. We liked the screened porch at the back, too, in the early evenings when we could watch the interesting comings and goings of local wildlife residents (deer, turkey, mountain sheep, javelinas and more birds than we could identify)--a pretty amazing experience for these urban dwellers. The cabin itself is a Southwestern version of shabby chic with its rusted, corrugated ceilings, generous and comfortable seating, excellent lighting, interesting wall-hangings and a veteran electric stove with an oven that is slightly slanted, a feature that works great and gives a traditional pecan pie a unique shape. The cabin also offers satellite TV, WIFI and a DVD library and a VCR on which to view them. The bathroom is stocked with high-quality soap, shampoo and snowy white bath linens. We attended a Star Party and other great programs at the nearby McDonald Observatory and toured the restored mid-1800's Fort Davis military post, which, in our opinion, is one of the best surviving examples of such Southwestern posts. There are so many things to do in the area that a week goes by pretty quickly. During our stay, we met a couple of members of the ranching family that owns the cabin, and they were most helpful and welcoming. It was all just what we needed to mark our 50th wedding anniversary: a full and happily different experience.
Quiet, cozy and centrally located
This little cabin is basic but comfortable. It features beautiful views and solitude. It’s location, in a valley up a private dirt drive, is convenient for services in town and access to the state park, the observatory and the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute. We enjoyed our stay.
Beautiful and peaceful!!!!
We loved our stay here!!! The cabin is surrounded by beauty and there is so much to see and do. We will definitely be back!!!
Best Sleep Ever!
My husband and I stayed here for the Fort Davis Cyclefest weekend. What a sweet place! It is positively immaculate--incredible views off both the front and back porches. The decor is also tasteful with really interesting pictures and news articles.
It was wonderful to stay someplace with a full kitchen. For some reason the Fort Davis restaurants get overwhelmed with large groups like all the cyclists in town for the weekend. It was wonderful to have a full, well-appointed kitchen to prepare our meals. My husband hiked up behind the cottage while I was cycling. He said the hike and views were amazing. The bed is incredibly comfortable and the wifi is strong. It was cool enough to sleep with the windows open. Can't believe how well we slept!
My only drawbacks:
1. There is a combination lock to the gate to get to the dirt road to the cottage. My husband had no trouble working the combination; however, my old eyes had trouble seeing the numbers
2. The fridge hums a bit and there is a bit of noise from the road to the McDonald Observatory--these noises did not bother us at all, but could be issues for really light sleepers
3. Normally hot water taps are on the left and cold on the right--this is reversed in the bathroom. It's marked with blue and red dots, but I still kept turning on the hot when I thought is was cold. Also, the cold water in the bathroom sink doesn't have much water pressure.
4. Though wifi was really strong, I could not use my cell phone to make or receive calls in the house, but we could out in the driveway. May just be my Verizon cell service.
We will definitely rent this cottage again any time we are in the area. Eating breakfast on the back screened-in porch is truly amazing. Also the stars at night from the front porch were definately big and bright. We also appreciated the Direct TV with tons of stations so that we could watch the Sunday morning news shows.
Thanks for sharing your place with us!
Cozy Fort Davis cabin
Loved the seclusion! Lots of wildlife opportunities right from the front porch!
Breathtaking and Peaceful!
My husband & I spent two nights in this beautiful cabin & we did not want to leave. It is nestled among the most gorgeous portion of the Davis Mountains & is truly a hidden treasure! While at the Davis Mountain State Park we kept looking for “our“ cabin. We were pretty sure we saw aoudad (sheep) climbing on the mountain right by the cabin so we rushed back but we didn’t seem them. Many previous guests mentioned seeing up to 40 of these sheep! We decided to hike there instead of at the park & had a great time. It was more beautiful the higher we went, & we made it all the way to the top!
Coffee every morning on the screened in back porch, soaking in the breathtakingly beautiful mountain about 30 yards away, & stargazing every night marveling at how visible the Milky Way was! During our stay, we saw mule deer, hog, bunnies, a family of turkeys, a roadrunner, & hummingbirds every hour.
The living room & bedroom each have a small window AC unit & in August we had to keep them running. We also kept most of the lights off. There is wi-fi, but I couldn’t get anything on my cell phone to work even with the password provided. My husband said it worked outside in the front yard, but I didn’t bother trying it. I did wonder once or twice if I could have called for help if it had been necessary.
The satellite television always worked perfectly. Just so you know, the green chair in the pictures is not a recliner but both it & the couch are very comfortable.
The kitchen was well stocked. It was great having a refrigerator/freezer, stove & EXCELLENT coffee pot. I could see “my mountain” from the kitchen window too. The bathroom was great. It had a stocked linen closet & I appreciated the little bench under the window. I did have to do my hair in the bedroom because I only saw one outlet in the bathroom & it was too close to the wall for my 3-outlet adapter. Oh, between the bathroom & bedroom there is a closet with a vacuum cleaner, ironing board & iron! We used them too. (Thank you!)
Because of fees, this was quite expensive, but I don’t regret one penny! Thank you so much for sharing this lovely, lovely cabin. We want to make it a part of our future traditions & are already telling our family & friends about it.
Located just minutes from Fort Davis' shopping and restaurants, Fort Davis National Historic Site, and Davis Mountains State Park. A quick 30 minute drive will take you to McDonald Observatory for a star party or to neighboring cities, Marfa and Alpine.
