About Lisa Hubert
Waqaa! (Yupik greeting of Hello) I have hundreds of childhood memories of being raised at the old Camp Fairwood from camping to sailing. I currently live in Alaska but it has been my dream to own a little piece of Torch and I am now sharing my dream with you. Enjoy walking in the past amongst the old hard woods and crystal clear waters of Torch Lake. The sunsets will let you forget that there is any time but the moment. I am sure it will rejuvenate you as it does the same for me.
Lisa Hubert purchased this Cabin in 2013

What makes this Cabin unique
Grandma's cottage has beautiful 100' private lake frontage in the surroundings of Cedar and Birch hardwoods. It offers your own 90 ft. dock, boat lift (1000 lbs), beautiful newly built patio and a secure mooring ball. The east side of Torch lends itself to unforgettable sunsets and easy access around the lake. On sunny days, the lake has a wide array of hues of blue that are reminiscent of the Caribbean. Torch Lake is the largest lake in Michigan (18 miles long and 2 miles wide) and is part of a chain of lakes which allows boating from Elk Rapids to Bellaire. You are not far from Dewitt's Marina, Bellaire, Alden and Brownwood Acres. Grandma's Cottage is very unique with the knotty pine interior and furnishings. Everything is clean and spotless just as Grandma would have it. It is set up with 2 bedrooms with enough sleeping for 6 people. There is an enclosed outdoor porch that looks out to the lake where you can enjoy a breakfast while feasting your eyes on the third Most Beautiful Lake in the World, recognized by National Geographic Magazine. The summer of 2016, Grandma's Cottage will now offer wireless internet, outdoor deck with patio furniture, newly renovated flagstone patio/fire pit with walk ways to cabin and water. We had a wonderful time at Grandma's cottage. The property is breath-taking with incredible Torch Lake frontage. The swimming was so much fun for our kids and the view of the sunsets, while sitting in the hammock or the dock were breath-taking. The cottage was cozy, clean, and had plenty of room for our family of 5. We loved having coffee on the front porch in the morning while enjoying a view of the lake. The owners are super responsive to questions. We highly recommend Grandma's Cottage and plan to do future vacations there!
Close to Shorts brewery! Public access about 3 miles North! Had our dogs stay in a kennel close by so we visited them daily
Relaxing, peaceful and quiet!
Grandma’s cottage is in a wonderful wooded setting on Torch Lake. It is very quiet and the Lake is absolutely beautiful. The location is great. The cottage is very comfortable and roomier than we expected. It is amazingly stocked with everything you could imagine except, we could not find an iron. No problem, it was a great week on the lake!
As advertised, this place is beautiful!!!! The house was clean and well maintained. Anything we needed was already there, from a close line for towels to firewood for the fantastic fire pit, they thought of it all!!!! This is our 7th year at the lake, however our first stay here. By far the best experience we have had!
The only disappointment had to do with docking the boat. Having to tie off to a mooring ball and swim to and from the dock to use the boat was miserable, especially in the morning. A new lift capable of supporting newer boats would make this a five star must stay property.
Nice but misrepresented
The cottage was nice and a GREAT location on the lake, however one of the deciding factors for my Torch cabin pick was having air conditioning. My family was staying the week of fourth of July and my mom doesn't do well with the heat. I wanted my mom to be comfortable while our whole family was able to get together for this vacation. Grandma's Cottage's profile clearly states air conditioning as the second amenity. I was very disappointed to find there is in fact no a.c. but 3 floor fans for the entire place. We had 90 degree weather, and while the lake was great for us youngsters to cool off, I felt bad for my mom the entire time, though she's a saint and won't complain.
The profile also listed a complimentary bottle of wine upon arrival and also states this in their welcome email you receive right before the trip. After traveling from out of state and taking a cab from the airport, my boyfriend and I were excited to enjoy this wine prior to having our groceries arrive the next day with my family. There was no bottle of wine :(
Lastly, I am unsure if this is normal or not, but it did take 2 weeks for our refundable damage deposit to get returned. I would think that it would be recognized there was no damage and returned prior to the next guests.
Just make sure you know what your getting and not getting before booking this one.
I'm very sorry to hear about the extreme heat but I do not list those nine descriptive amenities on VRBO. I only have control of the description of the amenities. I just talked to VRBO to try to clear up this mistake. It's complicated and I'm sorry for the misunderstanding but if you looked farther down on the description of amenities, it stated that we have 3 portable circulating fans. I certainly understand how someone would see those 9 descriptive words and think we had air conditioning.
Again, as an owner, I did not see or have control of what VRBO highlighted in that section. I'm looking into that with VRBO. I certainly didn't mean to misrepresent our property.
As you may know we live in Alaska and Kim, my husband, takes time in the Spring of the year to travel to Michigan to open-up Grandma's Cottage. As I explained to you, it was a very unusual April this year. There was so much snow that he had to find a snow plower just to get into Davock Lane. He had to hike from the main road to get into the cottage at that time. So it really wasn't practical to purchase wine this season due to temperatures and conditions of the road.
The refund of the damage deposit is automatic through VRBO (They allow 1-2 weeks). I'm sorry it is not quicker but it is a good system that works.
We really try to make things warm and welcoming at Grandma's Cottage and I apologize for the inconveniences. Please accept an additional refund of $50. Again, it could take up to a week for you to see in it on your account but rest assure it is coming.
Thank you again - it is our mission to make every guest as comfortable as possible and provide a unique and wonderful experience on the lake.
Wonderful lakefront cabin on beautiful property!
This was a wonderful trip! Torch Lake is stunningly beautiful and this cabin is right on the water! Loved the fire circle and cozy adirondack chairs. The dock was perfect for swimming and has a nice wide ladder for easy access into the lake. The cabin was immaculately clean, with plenty of linens and a kitchen great for cooking. Cabin also has a great porch perfect for a rainy day spent reading. Owners are super responsive to questions and provided great details. Our family of four loved this rental and will definitely rent again!
Upgrades for Summer of 2017 include a new lawn and landscaping in the front yard facing Torch Lake, bathroom faucets/toilet, flagstone walkway to entry way.
Summer 2016 will have a beautiful renovated flagstone patio/fire pit and walkways that lead right down to the lake. We also added additional parking!
As of the summer season of 2015, Grandma's Cottage will go wireless. In addition, a beautiful porch was built along with new patio furniture. We still have a deluxe dock that extends 90 feet into the water, and a secure mooring ball for your boats.
Right out your front door is a deck and fire pit with Adirondack chairs around the perimeter.
Brownwood Acres only a few miles North is a unique cluster of stores with souvenirs, light lunches, renown fresh doughnuts, and toy store especially fun for the kids.
Traveling south is Dewitt's Marina along with the famous Dock Side Bar/Restaurant at the entry of Clam River.
Traveling even far there south either by boat or car is the action packed Torch Rivera Marina and a favorite hang out for boaters due to the amazing sandbar and crowd. Great hang-out for the young people. On the Fourth of July it is the place to be to view the phenomenal display of fireworks.
There are a number of top golf courses in the area, Shanty Creek with 'The Legend' designed by Arnold Palmer and of course, Grand Traverse Resort & Spa with 'The Bear' designed by Jack Nicklaus.
Traveling south is the quaint town of Alden that has public launch pad and docks. On Thursday nights they host a special evening with stores staying open late and live entertainment (music, magic show, etc.).
Traveling M88 to the cute town of Bellaire you will find all sorts of cuisine, brewery, and entertainment. They also host a well stocked grocery/liquor store.
There is a minimum of 7 nights, only from Saturday to Saturday. Check In time 3:00 and check out at 10:00 am. Please no smoking and no pets. *Rates are subject to change until reservation is made
