We want your lodging experience to be most enjoyable. Part of that enjoyment comes from selecting the vacation property that best fits your needs. Mama Bear’s Cabin was built in 1985 and is 650 sq. ft., a good space for 2 to 4 people. The style is simple, clean and unpretentious. The kitchen is equipped with all the basics you need for cooking, but if you are a gourmet chef, this may not be the place for you. Some of the dishes are hand made pottery. Not everything matches. There is no dishwasher. Garbage needs to be disposed of carefully to avoid attracting those wild critters. Collecting compost scraps and recycling is required, and a conservative energy usage strongly encouraged. There is no central heat. There is a hearth stove, a wall furnace. and a window air conditioner. Please feel free to contact us at any time should you have questions or concerns.

Drue is an avid runner, and René is a potter. We both share a love for acting and can be seen in local productions from time to time. Obi is our beloved 3 legged, one eyed poodle.
We love Nevada City and the wonderful community here and have lived here over 24 years. We love sharing information about the area with our guests.
Drue and Rene purchased this house in 2000
All three of our cabins (Papa Bear's Lodge, Mama Bear's Cabin and Baby Bear's Cottage) are on the same property. The lodge was our family home for a number of years and we loved living here. When we decided to move into town next to Rene's studio, we knew others would really enjoy the lodge and smaller cabins. And we were right!
Privacy, nature, and a short drive to the beautiful South Fork of the Yuba River. It is a magical place. Wild turkeys, deer, foxes, coyotes, racoons, squirrels and the rare bear siting can all happen right here.
Beyond expectations...a "piece of heaven" surrounded by chaos
A place to just be yourself.
Thank you so much.
You always come back home. Till then, great expectations with "heaven".
This cabin was exactly what we wanted for a relaxing weekend getaway. We loved the cozy log cabin feel and thought it was even better than pictured. It's nice to find a place that is pet friendly so we don't have to be separated from our dogs and worry about finding someone to care for them while we're away. We hope to return soon!
My husband and I visited this cabin along with a family friend during the weekend of October 21st. The cabin is cozy, cute and comfortable. We prepared a nice meal here on one night, and went out to dinner in Nevada City the other. There's a large covered porch and hot tub outside as well as outdoor seating. It's located in a quiet rural neighborhood surrounded by trees. There's a remote controlled gas "wood" style stove, which was quick to take off the chill of the evening. The cabin was clean and seems well maintained.
It's clear from the guest book that many people stay at this cabin on more than one occasion and it seems ( along with the neighboring cabins owned by the same couple) that it would be a great location for a family reunion, or vacation with extended family and friends for a week or month at a time. My one critique of the stay is that based on charging a cleaning fee, asking weekend guests to strip the beds and start a load of laundry as well as empty trash at a location down the road was a bit much, especially for our friend who is a travel agent and for whom this was a first experience with a VRBO rental. These instructions seem appropriate for an extended stay of one week or more, but for only a short weekend visit, it seemed like too much work before checkout on a Sunday morning.
The property and cabin space were perfect! We spent two comfortable nights there with 4 adults and one child. I could sit out on the deck all day-so peaceful. I highly recommend this cabin to anyone staying in the area.
Best cabin ever. Perfect size for 2-4 people. Had everything you need. The hot tub was a great addition and the secluded location was exactly what we were looking for. Just be aware that if you click the MAP location, the address may be wrong. Read the driving instructions because the satellite reception is not good out there and you might miss the driveway. The cabin was cozy and perfect. The hosts were very nice also. Check out the great pottery in the cabinets! Very talented. Will stay here as often as possible. Perfect for a romantic getaway.
We had a wonderful weekend in Nevada City. The cabin was perfect: clean, well-stocked, and private. We loved it!
What a wonderful place. We loved the mama bear cabin and can't wait to book our next trip, with hopes to rent papa bear or all three for a family trip. Great place for a reunion or get-away. Thank you for making this weekend away so wonderful for us.
Nevada City is a charming historical gold mining town at 2500' altitude, situated between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe. The people are friendly, and the landscape awesome. If you like the outdoors this is the place to mountain bike, hike, kayak or just take a stroll in the beautiful surroundings.
If you like history, there is plenty here. Originally built in the 1850's, Nevada City and it's neighboring town, Grass Valley, are historically preserved, with the streets looking very much as they did back in the days of the gold rush era. You will find beautiful old Victorian homes, gold mining museums, fine restaurants and live theater. You can even try your hand at gold panning, For a great day trip you can explore Lake Tahoe and the surrounding area.
Lake Vera is a small lake surrounded by summer camps. Our cabins are located on 5 acres next to Camp Augusta. In the summer months you can hear 'happy camp sounds' as children enjoy swimming, zip lining and singing around the camp fire.
