Please note that we are next to an 80 acre summer camp. During the months of May-August,camp is in session and you will hear 'happy' camp noises from time to time during the day. Quiet hours start at 9:30 p.m for the campers, 10:00p.m. for our cabin guests.

Swimming, tennis and a children's play ground are in Nevada City and Grass Valley. We are just a 45 minute drive to the nearest ski area for downhill or cross country skiing, and sledding. Downtown Nevada City is two and a half miles away, where you will find fine dining, wine tasting, great theater, musical entertainment, art galleries and a fun shopping experience in this charming historic gold rush town.

Historic Grass Valley is just another three miles away with more of the same, and we are 1 1/2 hours drive from either Sacramento or Tahoe.

In July we have three 'Summer Nights', the last three Wednesdays in the month. The streets are closed to traffic and lined with food and craft vendors.

In July is the return of the Worldfest with 8 stages of music, children's programs, workshops, dance, artisans and international food.

Don't miss the Bluegrass Festival, Music In The Mountains, Halloween, Mardi Gras, Fall colors, etc., etc., etc.

Enjoy Victorian Christmas, the first three Wednesday nights, and the last Sunday before Christmas. You'll find artisans, food venders and all the shops open late. The gas streetlights, Victorian carolers, and friendly merchants make this the place to visit and shop for the holidays.

Area: The Yuba River,, with many deep pools and massive smooth boulders is only minutes from our home. A beautiful trail meanders along its banks for miles.

Lake Vera is a small lake surrounded by summer camps. Our cabins are located on 5 acres next to Camp Augusta. In the summer months (late May to mid August) you can hear 'happy camp sounds' as children enjoy swimming, zip lining and singing around the camp fire, then off to bed by 9:30, quiet hour.

We want your lodging experience to be most enjoyable. Part of that enjoyment comes from selecting the vacation property that best fits your needs. Mama Bear’s Cabin was built in 1985 and is 650 sq. ft., a good space for 2 to 4 people. The style is simple, clean and unpretentious. The kitchen is equipped with all the basics you need for cooking, but if you are a gourmet chef, this may not be the place for you. Some of the dishes are hand made pottery. Not everything matches. There is no dishwasher. Garbage needs to be disposed of carefully to avoid attracting those wild critters. Collecting compost scraps and recycling is required, and a conservative energy usage strongly encouraged. There is no central heat. There is a hearth stove, a wall furnace. and a window air conditioner. Please feel free to contact us at any time should you have questions or concerns.

About Drue and Rene

Drue is an avid runner, and René is a potter. We both share a love for acting and can be seen in local productions from time to time. Obi is our beloved 3 legged, one eyed poodle.

We love Nevada City and the wonderful community here and have lived here over 24 years. We love sharing information about the area with our guests.

Drue and Rene purchased this house in 2000

Why Drue and Rene chose Gold Country & High Sierra

All three of our cabins (Papa Bear's Lodge, Mama Bear's Cabin and Baby Bear's Cottage) are on the same property. The lodge was our family home for a number of years and we loved living here. When we decided to move into town next to Rene's studio, we knew others would really enjoy the lodge and smaller cabins. And we were right!

What makes this house unique

Privacy, nature, and a short drive to the beautiful South Fork of the Yuba River. It is a magical place. Wild turkeys, deer, foxes, coyotes, racoons, squirrels and the rare bear siting can all happen right here.

Nevada City is a charming historical gold mining town at 2500' altitude, situated between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe. The people are friendly, and the landscape awesome. If you like the outdoors this is the place to mountain bike, hike, kayak or just take a stroll in the beautiful surroundings.

If you like history, there is plenty here. Originally built in the 1850's, Nevada City and it's neighboring town, Grass Valley, are historically preserved, with the streets looking very much as they did back in the days of the gold rush era. You will find beautiful old Victorian homes, gold mining museums, fine restaurants and live theater. You can even try your hand at gold panning, For a great day trip you can explore Lake Tahoe and the surrounding area.

Lake Vera is a small lake surrounded by summer camps. Our cabins are located on 5 acres next to Camp Augusta. In the summer months you can hear 'happy camp sounds' as children enjoy swimming, zip lining and singing around the camp fire.

Absolutely Perfect

  • 5 of 5

The perfect place for a calm, relaxing, creative retreat. The cabin is set back with plenty of privacy (probably a few hundred feet) from the other two that share the driveway, and the hot tub is on the other side of the cabin so it's completely private. It's cozy, quiet and clean, the bed I slept in was very comfortable, the windows allow a nice breeze on comfortable days, and the A/C kept the place cool on a couple of warmer days. The kitchen is a decent size and is well-stocked with pots, pans, dishes and utensils. I was writing most of the time so I didn't get out and explore the area much, but it's close to a very cute downtown area with small shops and restaurants (which reminded me of some New England towns) and there are a few supermarkets and shopping centers within 15-20 mintues.

I was by myself, but it felt like a family of four would be comfortable here, if the kids shared a bed, or if one of them was big enough to climb the ladder to the loft.

I can't recommend it highly enough!

Peaceful and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from our 3 night stay at Mama Bear's cabin and were very comfortable there. It was clean and very quiet and relaxing. We did have a few minor issues with the microwave and the DVD player, but Drue addressed them and we don't sweat the small stuff.

The pros of this property are:

The property is very quiet and peaceful. The beds are comfortable and everything was very clean. The gas fireplace was cozy and did a great job of keeping the chill at bay. The kitchen is pretty well stocked with everything you need to prepare meals, but if you are a foodie and plan on cooking larger or more complex meals, I would suggest bringing your own sharp knife and if you need a pot bigger than a 4 qt, bring that too. The hot tub is situated under the trees and is very private. The outside deck with a Weber grill is a nice amenity, although we did not use it. The yard is not fenced, but if you have well behaved dogs that won't run off, it is a very nice space for them. My favorite thing about the property is that it is a short 8 minute ride to downtown, but feels like it is way out in the country.

Thank you Drue and Rene' for a lovely space to relax.

We loved staying at the Mama Bear cabin!

  • 5 of 5

Our whole family had a great time. The kids loved the bear toys and sweet cabin, we all enjoyed the deck and of course visiting the Yuba River, and my husband and I loved having a hot tub right next to the cabin to relax in before kids got up & after they went to bed at night! We plan to come back!!!

A cozy getaway

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I loved staying at this cabin over 4th of July weekend. We made full use of the grill and kitchen and had a great time in the hot tub. The cabin is conveniently located quite close to town, as well as our favorite swimming spot on the river. Comfy beds, all the necessary amenities -- a great time! Thank you!
