Private Streamside - Historic but Modern Ski / Fishing Lodge from 1900

Bedrooms 4
Space 2,500 sq. ft.
Property type lodge
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Historic, soooo charming, but fully modern in the right places

The Woodland Valley Lodge (in Phoenicia) is among the finest accommodations of the Catskills. Walk out the door down to the stream below the house to fish and swim, ski either Belleayre or Hunter Mountain in 17 miles, or hike Giant Ledge or Slide Mountain from the trailhead a short walk down Woodland Valley Road. Perfect for families, girls weekends, retreats. Stay a few days - a couple weeks or 6 months! We've hosted all of the above and our guests have all loved the Lodge!

A 1900 craftsman ski/fishing lodge with all the warmth and charms of a stone fireplace, wood beamed ceilings and douglas fir floors, but fully updated with the modern comforts of home. The Lodge is nestled in spectacular Woodland Valley – a short two hour drive from New York City and just down a two lane road to one of America’s coolest towns, Phoenicia. Mark it as your own and visit us soon.

Floor 1:

You enter the Lodge into the Main Lodge room where you'll sit and chat for hours as you solve the world's challenges on two leather sofas in front of a river stone fireplace which is constructed from our own Woodland Valley Creek stones. A Morso fireplace insert with blower ensures you stay warm in winter and dust free since it is sealed from the wood particulate.

The Lodge decor is themed on the great western US National Parks, and of course on New York’s own Catskills Park. The Yellowstone master bedroom and the Rainier bedroom are downstairs off of the Main Lodge room, and each sleeps two in queen beds. The Library / TV room, also located off of the Main Lodge, is another cozy spot to sit and read or binge Netflix on a leather sofa there with your feet on the ottoman. There is a full bathroom as you walk from the Main Lodge room to the kitchen. Entering the kitchen, you'll face the Wolf range and love the natural light from windows on two walls of the kitchen. The breakfast table seats 6 and then 2 more can eat at the countertop nook on two counter stools. Walking through the kitchen then past the other modern appliances, you will enter the Catskills dining room. Here you can sit drinking your coffee either at the large stone topped table or in one of the two lounge chairs with lambskin padding and watch nature through the windows on three sides. In summer listen to the bucolic bubbling of the Woodland Valley Creek as you drink your coffee, and in winter watch the snow fall as you still hear the faint creek sounds through the windows.

Floor 2:

The Glacier bedroom is at the top of the stairs upstairs and also sleeps two in a queen bed, while the Yosemite bedroom across the hallway sleeps four (2 on the bunk beds and another 2 in separate twin beds). There is a separate complete bathroom on each floor, and your kids will LOVE the Bear Cave which is a hidden kids hangout upstairs!

The scenery surrounding the Lodge is spectacular and just outside your door. Mountains are on all sides. Watch deer with their fawns below you from the Catskill room as you drink your morning coffee. Fish for rainbow and brown trout, or enjoy a refreshing swim in the creek. Hike or showshoe the many nearby trails. Sit around the firepit at night in Adirondack chairs listening to the wood crackle and the creek passing just feet away.

The Lodge brings the US National Parks to you two hours from the city. Come spend some time - relax and energize with nature all around you.

The Woodland Valley Lodge was amazing! We couldn't have asked for a better fit for our party of six adult siblings celebrating a Birthday. The home was a perfect mix of old charm and modern amenities. We were in awe of the space from the minute we walked through the door. No surprise - everything was as stated in the description. Comfortable cozy beds, well equipped kitchen, super clean, and lots of room for all. We had planned on eating out our first night but decided to eat in because we were so comfortable and didn't want to leave the house. We enjoyed a long walk up the road, exploring the backyard stream, drives through neighboring towns, as well as the charming village of Phonecia. Our two night stay seemed to last so much longer because we were so relaxed and comfortable! The owners are extremely thoughtful hosts and were quick to respond to any questions I had when booking the property. This is definitely a home I would hope to rent again!

A Wonderful Weekend Woodland Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Had a great time with family and friends this weekend (all 10 of us). The Lodge is very cool and comfortable. The kids loved playing in the creek. We all hiked some beautiful mountain trails nearby. There's a nice little yard for playing games (e.g. cornhole). The firepit made for some fun nights with our acoustic instruments. I enjoyed some fly fishing, but didn't catch anything. And the nearby Phoenicia business district kinda feels like something out of Twin Peaks, but in a good way. Anyway, thanks for a great time and hope to be there again next year.

Owner's Response: Glad that you and your family enjoyed the Lodge! Sounds like you got the best of all worlds - the fishing, swimming and hiking around the Lodge and the best breaks in Phoenicia. The eclectic shops and wonderful restaurants are always vibrant and fun for the entire family. Our favorites are Brios, Sweet Sues and the Alamo Cantina (for Taco Tuesday!), and Phoenicia Diner just outside of town! Come back again next year!

A lovely stay!!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here with friends over the 4th of July week, and what an amazing place! Initially I was concerned with it's proximity to the road (we have a 6 yr old boy), but perhaps 3 cars passed during our very quiet stay. And the very best part of the house is the back yard away from the road, complete with a fire pit and the Esopus - we couldn't have asked for more.

Just as described, the inside of the home is well appointed and very comfortable. My only suggestions are minor - nicer pillows, more fans and more screens on the windows. Many windows couldn't be opened (too many bugs) and we would have enjoyed more of the lovely breezes. And perhaps better kitchen knives for any chefs out there.

We'd definitely recommend this home. Kevin was very easy to work with and answered any questions we had quickly. He even handled a false alarm (a friend's 2 yr old played a bit with the house alarm buttons) with a sense of humor and total understanding (apologies again, Kevin!)

Listening to the creek at night, sitting around the fire making smores, enjoying time with friends - we'll be back for sure! Thanks, Kevin!

Owner's Response: Thanks for joining us at the Woodland Valley Lodge! We can't wait to host you and your family again in the near future. The Lodge is truly about family and memories. We treasure every time we are there and so glad that you did as well. Note that we've added additional fans to the downstairs closet already. We also hope to add more window screens this year when we repaint the outside of the Lodge.

Beautiful Setting

  • 5 of 5

We loved our experience at the Woodland Valley Lodge. It was spacious, clean, quiet, and tasteful. Most of all, it is very well run and cared for. The beds are amazingly comfortable. It has a great view of the stream below. Our group of nine (ages 20's-70's) had many early morning and late night conversations around the table in the Catskill Dining Room. The Lodge is much bigger than it looks, and people can be in one part of the house and not bother others who are resting or reading. We took advantage of several of the hikes the area has to offer such as Otter Falls, and hope we can come back someday to this very special place.

Classic Catskills

  • 5 of 5

The Woodland Valley Lodge was great, bringing back happy memories. My family spent every summer in a rustic cabin not far away and my brother still owns a home near Windham, NY so we already have a deep affection for the area.

The lodge was charming, deceivingly large, relaxing and very comfortable. The modern amenities and appliances were great. We especially loved the tree house feel of the breakfast/dining room. The Adirondack chairs in the back were great too. I got to read many chapters of my book with the magical sounds of the creek behind me.

My family had a tremendous time and look forward to returning to this special place. The booking process very easy and the owners answered our questions promptly.

Woodland Valley

  • 5 of 5

Thoroughly enjoyed the peaceful, beautiful Woodland Valley in a wonderful lodge that harkened to days past! Light bright kitchen and dining area overlooking the creek made our mornings while we were lulled to sleep by the sounds of the rushing water! Property is as beautiful as described. We came to Phoenicia for biennial re-union and We definitely scored the best rental in Phoenicia! Enjoyed early morning walks on WV road, easy access to Catskills hikes, Esopus tubing, Sweet Sues and Phoenicia Diner. Definitely will try to rent again

About Kevin and Robin

We are lovers of nature, food, people, reading and music. The Lodge gives us all the above and we get here as much as possible. When we cannot be here, we love sharing the Lodge with visitors from all over the world who appreciate its historic charms and modern touches.

Kevin and Robin purchased this lodge in 2012

Why Kevin and Robin chose Phoenicia

We rented properties in the Catskills for years and through trial and error (some places can look so good in the photos!)

finally found Woodland Valley. Woodland Valley has the best combination of incredible natural beauty as well as being near small town Phoenicia when you need good restaurants, library, Phoenicia playhouse, ice cream or FUDGE! When we found the Lodge, we fell in love instantly. It is heaven - two hours from NYC or Cooperstown and on Burroughs' famed Woodland Valley trout brook!

The Lodge is themed on the US National Parks. You'll find framed antique postcards in every room and National Park themed Pendleton blankets on the beds.

What makes this lodge unique

We've set up the Lodge for convenience and comfort. No old, cramped full size beds here - queens or twins only -

plus we have tempurpedic mattresses and 100% cotton sheets. Towels are varying shades so its easy to remember yours when you use it again. Coffee mugs have bold letters on them that spell out 'THE LODGE' to keep them straight on a cool morning or afternoon. The Lodge is home and better since you're here in your own wilderness.
