About Eugenia "Gene" Thornton
We are a retired couple who retired from the military after almost three decades of traveling around the world and living all over the United States. I, Gene, grew up outside Middletown DE, attended Washington College in Chestertown MD before entering the Army in 1973. I did personnel and public affairs. My husband, Don, was a Jersey boy who attended West Point and served in the Infantry with an alternate of Operations and Training. We volunteer for the American Heart Association, the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration, belong to several philanthropic, veterans, and conservations organizations. My mom passed on in February 2016 (she was on the dance floor of a cruise ship at age 99 when it happened). She wanted me to "make a little rental unit" over my garage to share our property with others. You will be using her dining room table, bed, secretary, and three chairs when you stay with us. You will be honoring her request and I hope you love it here as much as she did!
Eugenia "Gene" Thornton purchased this Studio in 2000
Why Eugenia "Gene" Thornton chose Kent County
We fell in love with our house the moment we saw it because the view of the lake reminded us of the State of Washington where we had once been assigned, yet we were close to our East Coast family. We entertained our mothers, our sisters and their families quite a bit when we first moved here. We spent a lot of love and labor improving the property. But now, the moms have passed on, the sisters have moved on and their families are having families of their own and none of them are nearby. We want to continue sharing our quiet location and beautiful lake with others.
What makes this Studio unique
We were stationed in the Pacific Northwest, as well as New York, DC, Kansas, Germany, Korea and the middle east during Operation Desert Storm. One of our favorite things to do when in the Pacific Northwest was to drive up Mt Rainier or into the Cascade Mountains for a hike. We saw many homes dotted along elevated lakes and always wished we could live in one of those. Then we took a wrong turn while house hunting in Delaware post retirement and put an offer on this house as soon as we saw the lake view. We redid the electric, rebuilt septic, rebuilt the dock, added a deck out back and relandscaped the entryway. In 2015 we rebuilt the garage and added storage in 2016, we converted the storage to the studio we are sharing with you. Sadly, you cannot see but a glimpse of the lake from the unit, but you will be welcome to use the outside of the home as if it were yours and I hope you will join us in celebration of birds, ducks, geese, frogs and if you are lucky, you might see a beaver or an otter while you are here.

Location was very relaxing. The carriage house was neat and tidy. We were very comfortable. Our host was very accommodating. Perfect spot for us. Only negative was the rain and no one had control over that. We enjoyed our stay rain or shine.
Was a peaceful quiet space!
The property is absolutely beautiful, and the apartment fit our needs perfectly! Gene is an excellent host, and although there was a slight hiccup with our stay, Gene went above and beyond to make sure we were all set. The only regret I have is that we didn't have more time to enjoy the scenery!
I am so sorry my professional cleaning team encountered a problem getting the room ready in time for your scheduled arrival and you had to be there while they cleaned. They have promised me it will not happen again! Thank you for your patience.
Really enjoyed my stay!
Wonderful accommodations and owners are exemplary as well
We had a wonderful stay. Gorgeous waterfront property. Lovely, clean, comfortable room. Felt very comfortable and look forward to a return trip to enjoy the new dock and fire pit!
A great place to commune with nature, with all the comforts of "home" just a few steps away. Close enough for day trips to the beach too!
We look forward to seeing you again.
A Real Find!
We loved everything about the carriage house. This little studio is not that little at all. It has all the creature comforts- from an extremely comfortable bed, nice roomy bathroom, lots of beautiful windows, even a very nice little kitchenette. The studio is clean, clean, clean!
Gene is an excellent host. She was friendly and helpful but we had plenty privacy. The grounds are beautiful. We especially enjoyed sitting on the dock with our morning coffee. We also appreciated the canoe made available for a fun time exploring the lake. We will look forward to another visit. Thank you Gene for your hospitality!
We loved having you too and thank you for the surprise sunday supper!
