Imagine yourself in a charming apartment in the heart of Impressionist Paris. Our sunny, light-filled classic apartment is located on the second floor of an 1870's building in the "Nouvelle Athenes" neighborhood of Paris, close to Montmartre.

It is elegantly furnished, sleeps four to six comfortably and is convenient to the center of Paris. Decorated with antiques and oriental rugs that we collected and fully equipped with appliances (full-size refrigerator/freezer, dishwasher, microwave, washing machine, gas cook-top and electric oven), it feels like a close friend's home and is the perfect pied-a-terre for a short or extended stay. Our personal art collection complements the charm and warmth of the apartment. Located on the "cour" side of the building, there is no traffic noise and the apartment is tranquil and welcoming.

Our apartment has all original period architectural details --high molded ceilings, parquet floors and marble fireplaces -- but has been completely restored for comfort and convenience. There are windows in all rooms, so the apartment is cool in the summer and light year-round.

Our spacious apartment is 950 square feet (88 square meters), comprised of four rooms; a master bedroom with full queen bed, second bedroom with double bed, and living room with double sofa bed. The separate dining room features an antique dining table and six chairs. The full-size bathroom has a large bathtub and shower, double washbasins, toilet and washing machine. There are doors from both the dining room and the master bedroom into the full bathroom. The half bath has a toilet and washbasin. The well-designed gourmet kitchen has granite countertops, ample cupboards and is equipped for preparing a dinner for 8. Linens, cutlery and kitchen utensils are furnished. Telephone/answering machine, DSL internet connection, CD stereo and cable television and a DVD player are also provided. We have tried to anticipate all our guests' needs so that they feel at home--hair dryer, iron and ironing board, high-quality beds, sheets and towels.

We ask our guests not to smoke in our apartment.

Our apartment is situated in the heart of the "Nouvelle Athenes"--a neighborhood which is an appealing neighborhood of nostalgic Paris. Within steps are traditional boulangeries including the winner of the best baguette of Paris, small working shops--the shoemaker, the antique dealer, as well as true neighborhood bistros where the welcome is simple and genuine. This is not "chic" Paris of high fashion and fancy prices, but a true neighborhood. A small park nearby with a children's play area looks just as it did when painted by Vuillard. The apartment is close to Montmartre and the lively market street of rue Lepic, Moulin Rouge and historic Place de Clichy and Sacre Coeur. There is a unique organic market on Saturdays on boulevard des Batignolles, a pleasant stroll from the apartment. It is within close walking distance to Opera Garnier, Madeleine, and the Galeries Lafayette and Printemps and the "hip" shopping of rue des Abbesses.

We live in this neighborhood and Stephanie is fluent in French. She led walking tours in Paris and can help you plan your itinerary. We greet our guests to make sure they are comfortable and we are happy to assist with dinner reservations, airport or train connections or the numerous small details which make a trip comfortable and memorable.

There are two Metro stops and multiple bus stops in the immediate neighborhood within 5 minutes on foot. These connect to all major lines of central Paris and are direct to the Arc de Triomphe, the Champs-Elysees and all major tourist sites such as the Louvre, Musee d'Orsay, the Eiffel Tower and others. This area of Paris is unusually well served for efficient access to all areas of the city and suburban sites (Versailles, Giverny).

The building is small and owner-occupied. There are several English speaking residents who are friendly and willing to help with simple requests. The apartment has been fully modernized, while remaining faithful to the spirit of the Impressionists. Children are welcome. We will furnish additional photos, an area map and description of the neighborhood upon email request.

About Stephanie Freedman

Leaning out of our apartment window, we can almost touch the Moulin Rouge. Darrell and I moved to Paris in 2001, after having lived in Seattle, Hartford and Brooklyn. We wanted a mid-life adventure and felt that Paris had everything--the buzz of a big city, great access to other European destinations, famous French cuisine (well, wine and cheese)and the experience of a new culture. When we miss having our toes in the ocean, we hop on the TGV and find ourselves in Cassis 3 hours later. Now, 15 years later, we are astonished to find ourselves almost locals and delighted to wake up each day with another adventure ahead of us, here in Paris. We've traveled extensively in Europe and stayed in many VRBO properties. In our experience, what people want the most is a comfortable, welcoming and well-maintained property with owners who are available and friendly. We've worked very hard to make our apartment one where people feel at home and at ease. We've furnished it with things we love and we're very happy to help our guests with our knowledge of Paris and the surrounding area. In other words, we've worked to meet the standard of welcome and comfort that we look for when we rent an apartment for ourselves.

Why Stephanie Freedman chose Paris Arr. 9 (Opera)

We choose our neighborhood in the "Nouvelle Athenes" part of the 9th arrondissement because it has jazz--both literally and figuratively. We're in lower Montmartre, so there are jazz clubs just up the street, but we also love the energy, the movement of this part of Paris. When we arrived, 15 years ago, it was still known as the "sex district." Now that is mostly folkloric and we are surrounded by young French families pushing their babies in strollers and the neighborhood has become very chic. We can get to any part of Paris from our neighborhood; transportation is terrific; there are all kinds of local restaurants and great shops and yet, the neighborhood has an authentic Parisian feel. There's a bit of nostalgia, a bit of hipness and a bit of "naughty Paris" all together here. Our guests love the real French feel of our apartment which was built in the 1860's (think Napoleon and Lincoln) and we are delighted to share our knowledge of Paris with them.

What makes this apartment unique

Just walk out the front door and you are in the heart of Paris! Aside from the Moulin Rouge, you'll find great food shopping (one of the favorite pleasures of the Parisians) on rue Lepic. You can hike up to Sacre Coeur--pass the last real "moulin" on your way, or have a tea party in the garden of the Musee de la Vie Romantique. All of this is minutes from our apartment. Beyond the neighborhood, the Opera Garnier (ballet) is within walking distance, if you need culture. If you want shopping, try the Grands Magasins, also a short walk away. For the Champs Elysees and the Tour Eiffel, hop on the #30 bus and you're almost there. It's hard to imagine an area that is better situated, close to everything but cosy in its own space.

Comfort and charm In a great neighborhood

My husband and I spent six weeks in this wonderful apartment. Warm, comfortable and well appointed, this traditional French apartment could not have been more perfect for us. Stephanie and Darrel had thought of everything one would need and want to enjoy a comfortable stay. The beds were very comfortable and all the extra linens and amenities were an extra bonus. We learned to love this neighborhood and the Montmarte area so much. The location of the apartment was perfect for easily getting busses and metros everywhere in Paris. If you are someone who loves to walk as we are, It is an easy walk to the center of Paris and to all points of interest. I would highly recommend this rental to anyone who wants to experience the real Paris.

Loved it!

Our family (2 adults and 2 children - 4y, 6y) stayed for a week at Stephanie and Darrell's apartment this spring. It had a very homey, but French feel. It is well equipped to move right in and feel like home. The amenities are just as expected, and an extra treat was the wonderful selection of classical music. We also really enjoyed their Walks in Paris cards, and did several of them with our boys. The location is very convenient to the Metro or bus system. There are also plenty of wonderful bakeries, restaurants, markets, and shops nearby. Stephanie and Darrell are extremely helpful and welcoming in terms of getting you to their apartment and answering any questions that you may have. We highly recommend staying here.

Loved it!

Two old friends, my husband and I had such a great time staying at Stephanie and Darrell's apartment this summer. It felt so much like home. It is very well equipped so we just moved right in and started having yummy breakfasts of fresh croissants with strawberry jam from the local bakery and farmer's market.

The apartment amenities are very well described but the real treat is the warm and welcoming attitude of Darrell and Stephanie. They love Paris and want to make sure you do too. Upon leaving Stephanie suggested we come back in winter. Great idea!

Our home in Paris!!!

WE have stayed in this apartment 4 or 5 times. I come to Paris often and have stayed in many apartments over the years in different arrondissement and quartiers. Not only is the location accessible and a real Paris neighborhood but the apartment is perfect in every way. Facing a courtyard on two sides, it is absolutely tranquil. There are two Metro lines in easy walking distance and a bus nearby that goes directly to Opera, the Louvre and across the river to St. Germain. A nearby street has meat, cheese boulangerie, traiteur, fish makert, epicerie as well a interesting cafes and bistrots. If you don't find everything you need there the Monoprix Supermarket is around the corner There are restaurants for every taste and pocketbook. The last time I was there with my teenage grand daughter we ate Italian, Indian,Thai, and in a neighborhood family type French Restaurant. Every evening was an adventure. Three Metro stops away is a large street market. The apartment is spacious and light and tastefully and comfortably furnished and decorated so that you will feel at home the minute you unpack. The kitchen and bath are fully equipped. The owners have thought of everything. Whenever we are there we cook and eat in or buy goodies at a local charcouterie. There is a neighborhood playground a short walk away for the kids. Even if you have no children it is an adventure to go sit for awhile and watch the French children play. We love everything about this apartment but best of all it is out of the tourist fray, convenient to everything, elegant and REAL Paris. We are headed there in the next few months. We can't wait!

If you're looking for "La vie parisienne"

We stayed at this wonderful apartment for a week while I was travelling for meetings in Paris and Lyon. I've been to Paris many times. But I've never experienced it like this. The apartment is spacious, peaceful, accessible to two metro stations within a three-block radius, cafés, restaurants, locals, shops and more. In short, if you're looking to LIVE in Paris, this is the apartment for you. The interior is decorated "à la parisienne" and you feel right away that you're IN Paris, and not in a hotel room. We cooked, studied and relaxed and actually occasionally preferred staying in, if you can imagine. We were able to invite colleagues for supper and felt really at home. If you're searching for an opportunity to immerse yourself in the everyday Parisian life, this apartment gives you just that. The Blanche and Place de Clichy metro stations are right around the corner with easy access on foot to Montmartre and Sacré coeur. The owner is SO sweet and quick to respond to questions. I recommend this apartment for anyone looking to avoid touristy hotels and eating in restaurants all the time. Vive la vie parisienne!

Winter stay

My wife, two little girls ages 5 and 7, and I stayed in this roomy warm apartment over the week of President's Day this year. It was perfect for us. Well located just 1-2 blocks from two Metro stations on the 2 and 13 lines but away from the tourist hives of other areas like the Louvre etc. If you walk up one block to the neighborhood playground and look right, you can see Sacre Coeur looming above you. And you are maybe two blocks from the Moulin Rouge but the block where the apartment feels very quiet and private. It is definitely a "real" Paris neighborhood. There were three bakeries on the block and more on the surrounding blocks. Every morning we headed down to one of them for our bread and pastries. There are many neighborhood grocery stores selling nice produce and Monoprix (a large supermarket) is 1-2 block away for staples. The apartment is roomy by Paris standards with 1-1/2 bathrooms and two full sized bedrooms. The living room is large with a large tv that we didn't actually use. Wifi worked well. The apartment is on the second floor which was just fine with our children. There is a (very) small lift which allowed me to bring our bags in and out on arrival and departure. WE had a great time and would recommend this to anyone looking for a nice apartment in a real central Parisian neighborhood.
