Overview

About the property

Adjacent to State Forest, Minutes to Mendocino and Ocean

This 700 square foot cottage is located on 5 secluded acres and was designed and built entirely by the owners. The cottage includes many special touches such as open beamed ceilings milled with local redwood. The cottage has tons of natural light. A wood pellet stove provides cozy heat and ambiance with the push of a button. There are also electric heaters in the bedroom and bathroom for additional warmth.

The cabin includes a private outdoor shower equipped with hot water, a private deck, an indoor claw foot bathtub and a compact yet full kitchen. The bedroom is outfitted with a brand new Leesa bed. There is also a twin bed which is perfect for kids. An additional futon with bedding is available to sleep a fourth person.

We are very kid friendly. Let us know and we will get out our trikes and cars for your child. We also have a very friendly dog but she stays on our side of the property most of the time.

We are also happy to provide recommendations for dining, beaches, trails or whatever else you are interested in seeing.

Jackson State Forest is our next door neighbor. There is a trail that leads from the property into the forest and we will leave you a map. Located ten minutes north of Mendocino and ten minutes south of Fort Bragg and five minutes from what we think is the best beach in the area.

We welcome smallish pets for an additional flat fee.

Romantic cottage in the Trees

  • 5 of 5

This is our second visit to Jake and Melinda's cottage in the Mendocino area and once again we enjoyed the quiet and peacefulness of their property. The cottage is perfect for a couple with an efficient small kitchen, and a loft bedroom where you look out into the tree tops. We brought our border collie Bojangles again and resident Molly played and slept together on the large deck where we enjoyed coffee in the mornings and wine in the evenings. On our last night we had our two young granddaughters with us who played on the lawn, watched the stars at night and went on walks on the nearby forestry trails finding treasures. There is an additional bed in the loft area which we used for the girls but Melinda had also left floor mattresses and linens but the girls wanted to "sleep" in the trees.

Jake and Melinda and their children are gracious and very responsive to any questions or needs you may have. We highly recommend this cottage to explore or just relax and read a book.

Thank you Jake and Melinda we'll be back,

Fred, Eileen and "Bo"

The perfect place for hiking or biking enthusiasts!

  • 5 of 5

Fabulous trails are right outside your door. And the climate here is perfect for hiking or biking. The cabin is very tastefully decorated. The bed is super comfy. The kitchen is very well stocked with basic necessities. We loved the deck where we could bask in the sun or slide over to be under the trees. Since we came here from a city, we were also very fond of the glorious quiet here. The owners were nearby but they were rarely seen in the week we were there. Nothing to complain about except that we had to leave!

Peaceful and quiet

  • 4 of 5

The guest house is quaint and very comfortable. We did not realize that the drive into the house was well off the beaten path, but it was worth it. The outdoor showers were a surprise and there was an indoor bath that was great as well. Outdoor furniture could be updated, it was wobbly and weathered. Overall it was very comfortable and pleasant, surrounded with forest setting. Owners are accommodating and offer assistance if needed. We would definitely stay here again.

Enchanted place

  • 5 of 5

Memorial day weekend, found this place with great difficulty as all of Mendocino was booked to the hilt. I'm so glad I found this little magical place in Caspar. It was the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of the world for a few days. When we arrived we gasped at the beauty of the property. This is a well kept secret indeed!

We were greeted with a nice bottle of wine and flowers (which I love). Brakenfern is such a beautiful handcrafted wooden cottage surrounded by wonderfully diverse foliage and such precious conifer trees, the pictures do it no justice at all. You have to physically be there to experience the serenity of this enchanted place. I found myself immediately unwinding and calming down as we entered the property.

The owners were so welcoming, who appeared for a spell when we arrived and quietly left us to our devices and let us experience this haven with no interference. My 11 month old rambunctious dog who is very scared of bigger dogs came out of his shell and played with the world's sweetest dog Molly who gave us company, kisses and who stole our hearts(especially mine). Molly I wanted to take you with me :) Left a piece of my heart there with you love.

The place was practically equipped with everything that one needed from spices to coffee, to pots and pans. The quaint cute bathroom fully equipped with a lot of towels, shampoo, soaps was a treat with a divine clawfoot club where we took turns soaking in looking out the window at the greenery. I loved the outdoor shower and even though there was a slight drizzle in the morning, I took my first outdoor shower looking up at the trees with warm water running down my back.It was so so healing. You HAVE to try this shower in nature!

From the collection of DVDs, movies were watched till the wee hours of the morning sinking into the comfy sofa. Sorry left some dog hair!

Since this property was centrally located we could visit Fort Bragg, Point Cabrillo Lighthouse, The botanical gardens, beautiful Jughandle beach,North Coast brewing company and many more places. Everything here felt handpicked and chosen with care. Thank you Jake and Melinda. We were also impressed by your story of how you guys built everything from scratch and what a wonderful place you have made to share with the world. Hope to come and visit again, sorry we could not say goodbye, we thought it best not to disturb you but we were very grateful and blessed to be able to live in your property for a few days.

Hidden Secret

  • 4 of 5

My husband & I stayed here for a nice 3 day weekend. The cost is great, comparable to hotel stay only you get a secluded quiet getaway. We loved the cottage. We could bring along our furry baby too! The owner, Melinda, greeted us when we arrived and then we had the place to ourselves. Just note there is no TV unless you watch DVDs. Be prepared with a great book to curl up with or bring along a DVD to watch. The location is perfect between Mendo & Fort Bragg . The only knock was that our internet was spotty at the cottage but you could get it when you got back out to Highway 1. I would highly recommend this place!!
