Overview

About the property

Adjacent to State Forest, Minutes to Mendocino and Ocean

This 700 square foot cottage is located on 5 secluded acres and was designed and built entirely by the owners. The cottage includes many special touches such as open beamed ceilings milled with local redwood. The cottage has tons of natural light. A wood pellet stove provides cozy heat and ambiance with the push of a button. There are also electric heaters in the bedroom and bathroom for additional warmth.

The cabin includes a private outdoor shower equipped with hot water, a private deck, an indoor claw foot bathtub and a compact yet full kitchen. The bedroom is outfitted with a brand new Leesa bed. There is also a twin bed which is perfect for kids. An additional futon with bedding is available to sleep a fourth person.

We are very kid friendly. Let us know and we will get out our trikes and cars for your child. We also have a very friendly dog but she stays on our side of the property most of the time.

We are also happy to provide recommendations for dining, beaches, trails or whatever else you are interested in seeing.

Jackson State Forest is our next door neighbor. There is a trail that leads from the property into the forest and we will leave you a map. Located ten minutes north of Mendocino and ten minutes south of Fort Bragg and five minutes from what we think is the best beach in the area.

We welcome smallish pets for an additional flat fee.

You will love it! Cozy, private, convenient, and immaculately clean!

  • 5 of 5

We loved Brackenfern Cottage! My wife and I needed a get away and Brackenfern Cottage proved to be the perfect choice! The cottage is set in beautiful woodlands— far enough from the main residence to be completely private, but close enough that we received a very welcome visit one day from the host’s dog Molly. The cottage is attractive, well furnished, immaculately clean (including everything in the kitchen), and has a very comfortable master bed. Far enough from Highway 1 to be very quiet, but a short 5 minute drive to the highway and just a few minutes from Mendocino. The claw foot tub is as advertised—wonderful!— with plenty of hot water to luxuriate. The hosts communicated in a very timely fashion and were very welcoming. We will definitely be back!!!

Heaven!

  • 5 of 5

The second we drove up to this fantastical little house in the woods, we knew we had made the right choice. After a warm greeting by Jake (the owner) and Molly (the dog), we settled into the sweet cottage for four days of bliss. The upstairs bedroom made us feel like we were sleeping in a treehouse, and oh my, how we enjoyed the outdoor shower. Both of us being nature lovers, this couldn’t have been a better choice. We have already recommended Brackenfern Cottage to several people, and hope to return someday.

Cozy, clean and charming.

  • 5 of 5

Lovely property with plenty of room for our dog to run, with hiking trails just a few minutes walk from the front door. Situated halfway between Mendocino and Fort Bragg, so easy access to beaches, cliff-walks overlooking the ocean and restaurants. Small but well-appointed kitchenette that would have perfectly suited our needs if we had chosen to prepare all of our meals there. The owners were nearly invisible (aside from their very friendly dog) but responded quickly to questions. We were there for three nights but would have happily stayed a week or more had our schedules allowed.

Quiet, peaceful and perfect

  • 5 of 5

Just like it was written up. A nice little cottage in an out of the way place, yet less than 15 minutes to Fort Bragg, many different beaches, as well as Cabrillo Lighthouse. A perfect little getaway just like we had hoped. Had a very nice time in one of our favorite areas.

Wonderful property with lots of charm and extra touches from owners!

  • 5 of 5

We traveled down the Pacific Coast Hwy from Seattle to SanFrancisco for a girls trip. For the entire trip, the only place we decided to stay two nights was this cottage that we booked well in advance. (We would have stayed another evening, but it was no longer available.) All 4 of us thought that it was our favorite place that we stayed. It has a lot of character, privacy, and wonderful outdoor space. We even decided to stay in and grill one night and just enjoy the beautiful setting. The owners were very thoughtful as they had extras of things like shampoo, soap, dish detergent etc... so that we didn't have to go buy those items. They had even given us a bottle of wine as a welcome gift. The one potential quirky thing for some people may be that the bathroom only has a claw foot tub with a wand. There is no indoor shower. However, I will tell you that this should not deter anyone from renting it. There is a large, very private, 2 person outdoor shower with hot water and concrete flooring. The outdoor shower is protected by high fencing and what better way to shower than by enjoying the greenery and the cool air as well. It was by far the best outdoor shower that I have ever used and it even had a place to hang towels and a bench for cloths etc... We did happen to stay in August during what may have been a not so typical hot spell. The house does not have air, but I would think it doesn't need it most of the time. We ended up opening windows and the owners had left us a fan as well. We can't say enough good things about this place. It is convenient to get back out to the main road and do the tourist things to see Mendocino, Fort Bragg, and do the Skunk train through the redwoods etc... Skunk train was a bit of a disappointment though; we saw much grander trees along the Avenue of the Giants. We highly recommend this house and location for anyone wanting a little getaway. This is hands down so much better than any hotel and even less expensive than a lot of the places we stayed. It is highly recommended!

sweet country cabin

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed here while having work done on our home. The cabin was very clean and every detail was well thought out. It was so lovely to be staying in a quiet serene place and escaping the work happening at our home. The clawfoot bathtub was divine and outdoor showers were wonderful the water heater works very well and water pressure was great. I would highly recommend this place! Jake greeted us upon our arrival and was very friendly and welcoming. We enjoyed a complimentary bottle of local wine and spent time relaxing and drawing in the garden!
