About the property

A 4500 sq/ft, 10 Bedroom home, on three levels with old school charm.

Located inside the gates of Montreat, BIRDWOOD is a unique 100 year old, 3 story, 4500 sq. ft. purposely vintage vacation home with a terrace and a wraparound porch on a double lot with a large circular drive. The location of BIRDWOOD provides easy access to the center of Montreat and Lake Susan, less than a mile away. The location also makes it perfect for enjoying nature, hiking and biking. BIRDWOOD is a short car ride to the center of Black Mountain with its quaint shops, excellent restaurants, and a large public golf course. While staying in Montreat you are able to join in local activities through the Montreat Clubs and Conference programs. However, our family has found the best places to be are rocking on the FOUNDER'S HAVEN porch with a book or napping on the swing, or up in the TREE HOUSE on the screened in porch with glass of wine or taking leisurely nap on the daybed, or playing with the children (large and small) on the terrace outside the LODGE and the BUNGALOW.

We have tried our best with pictures and descriptions, but if you have any questions or concerns one of our family members will be happy to provide more details.

About Lauren Nichols

Birdwood has been in our family since 1927 when my great great grandparents purchased Birdwood. The current owners are descendants of the original owners and live in Houston & Atlanta. I grew up at Birdwood, because my parents wanted a retreat from the heat of Texas; I also went to college in Winston Salem because I loved North Carolina. BIRDWOOD is our home too, every summer we gather, cousins, sisters, uncles, aunts, grandparents, children, friends, and share our love for each other and Birdwood. We want to share it with you & your family.

Our family, the Carrs from Bainbridge, GA who purchased the house in 1927 used BIRDWOOD as a private summer home. The house was inherited by the three daughters: Alice, Grace, and Anne in 1943. The current stewards of BIRDWOOD are descendants of Grace. One of which is a Clark Sister from New Orleans, who visited Birdwood during the summers, as an escape from the heat of New Orleans. My great aunt Kitty, also an owner says "We enjoyed it so much that we wanted to be as close as possible; my big sister Mary moved to Montreat in 1991 with her husband, Bill; so Ken & I settled in Atlanta in order to be a few hours from Montreat." In addition Kitty says

"One of our great joys is to sit on the porch with family and friends. As children we heard the story of Birdwood, while sitting on the porch. The story goes: our mother, her sisters and brother and parents(our grand parents) loved Montreat and had stayed in various 'elegant Boarding houses', so they purchased their own home, Birdwood, in 1927, where they had once stayed. The Carr family had all their meals in the one large dining room, which continued until 1955. The Carr sisters had all married and they desired their own separate spaces, so Birdwood was lovingly and carefully remodeled into three separate areas. "

Today guests may enjoy all of these areas.

Why Lauren Nichols chose Montreat

Birdwood has lovely, comfortable furnishings, so that guests feel right at home. Stealing away for a nap on the front porch swing is the best. There are many rocking chairs on the porch and terrace, so one may lounge, read a book or visit with friends. The scenery and healthy climate are also draws for this area. We have pleasant summers, usually 10 degrees cooler than Asheville. During Spring there are flowering dogwoods, fruit trees and rhododendron; Fall is ablaze with colors as the leaves change; and winter is cold and crisp, yet still invigorating for much outdoor activity. Some folks seek out Montreat in order to live comfortably and attend a conference at Ridgecrest (4 miles away) or at Montreat, the PCUSA Assembly grounds (3/4 mile), Montreat College, and the incorporated town of Montreat. There are about 500 homes, cottages and cabins, within the gate, both year round and summer homes open to all. Birdwood appeals to many: families, conferees, reunions and to participants of a wedding party. Of note, our parents married at the chapel in Montreat and had their wedding reception at Birdwood in 1929. This began the tradition of Birdwood receiving many guests, who enjoy the home for different occasions.

What makes this house unique

Flexibility to host groups of 20 guests. Great for entertaining outside on the terrace & wrap around porch. Big driveway and lots of parking.

The location, 2 miles from Black Mountain and only 15 miles from Asheville is a big benefit and provides many opportunities. Montreat was established at the turn of the century as a Presbyterian Conference Center, which it still in operation today. Yet many residents and visitors are not directly related to the conference center and enjoy all the amenities of the community. In addition to Montreat activities, there are many opportunities for recreation and fun in the surrounding area: Tennis, fishing, swimming, hiking and crafts are available in Montreat; in the surrounding area sightseeing, outlet shopping, rafting (French Broad River and the Nanahala River), golfing(2 miles, the Black Mountain Golf Course) and the Blue Ridge Parkway (entrance on Highway 70, East of Asheville) are all available. Don't miss the famous Biltmore House, the George Vanderbilt's mansion, English gardens and Winery are just one half hour away. Of course there's always just relaxing on the porch or patio.

Old Home with lots of character and space

  • 5 of 5

This old home was perfect for our family gathering. We had 19 people and had plenty of space!! There are 4 sepetate living areas but we all gathered in the main level for meals and games. The kids had plenty of space to play outside and there is a park that is less than a mile down the road. It was our first time to this area and we loved it. Lots of older big homes in this small town, cute downtown area with restaurants, pubs, and shops. Plenty of outdoor options. Very Satified with our trip.

Very well supplied with bed linens, towels, kitchen articles. Beds were sooo comfortable. I was concerned at first as to whether the baseboard heaters would be adequate, as they were off when we first came in and it was cold inside, but they worked very well.

Although we didn't use the one-bedroom unit downstairs, I noticed it didn't have a T.V. in it.

That's probably not significant, as it's sort of like an extension of the other unit downstairs, just a thought.

I had anticipated about 14 people making the trip, but only had four for the whole trip and two more for the last night, but can easily see it very suitable for seven couples with additional beds for six or more kids.

Enjoyed the stay very much. Beautiful neighborhood too. Four deer came through the yard the first night we were there, which was neat.

I made a phone call with a question to the owner and she was so helpful and nice to talk to.

We all look forward to coming back. Thanks!

This is the perfect place for a large group vacation.

  • 5 of 5

The house is awesome. It is divided into four separate "apartment" type areas, which allowed my immediate as well as extended family to stay in one central place to spend time together and yet have our own privacy as well. Better than staying at a hotel! The area is just gorgeous. We can't wait to go back!

Another excellent stay

  • 5 of 5

This was our second year staying in the house, and just as before it was fantastic. The owner was extremely helpful prior to our arrival, and the house itself is the perfect setup. Can't wait to visit again next year!

We loved staying at Birdwood. It is such a beautiful, clean home. It was perfect for our large group - an extended family. We spent a lot of time on the large porch and patio. Montreat is a piece of heaven on earth.

Very cool old home with 3 separate units in one home. The wrap around porch is to die for with tons of seating. We had 20 and had plenty of space in the home. Thanks for a great stay!

The Asheville area is know for it's natural beauty; in order to see the broad panorama, one must take a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway, designed for a leisurely drive and viewing the most magnificent mountain vistas; stop at Craggy Gardens for a picnic, watch for the 159 species of birds and the 100 varieties of trees and 1000s of plants.

One of my favorite Asheville activities is a two day visit to the famous Biltmore House and gardens. Wear comfortable walking shoes, spend the days viewing the Mansion, the gardens, the Antler Hill Village; also enjoy free wine tasting and guided tour of the Winery; you may bike, hike and can bring the kids for free.

One of my favorite Montreat activities is a hike up to Lookout Mountain, which takes only 1 hour and a half round trip. The view of Montreat, Lake Susan and surrounding mountains is well worth the climb. During the summer months check in at the Nature Center on Lookout Road for hiking maps or to sign up for a guided hike.
