Wake up to the sound of the ocean! The Beachcomber Cottage is a lovely low-country cottage with a large front porch facing directly onto the ocean and a pristine and secluded beach.
The location of this cottage really couldn't be better! Located on the 'Avenue of Oaks' on Daufuskie Island, the Beachcomber Cottage is within a very short walking distance to the beach.
The cottage itself is very unique and somewhat different from the other cottages in the area. Decorated by the owners themselves, it has a charming interior. If you've ever dreamed about having your own relaxed but attractive beach house, this cottage is the place for you and your family.
In terms of the interior, an open area great room and dining area includes a comfortable seating area with flatscreen TV (with Direct TV cable service) and a great selection of DVDs. The dining room table looks out to the porch and directly to the ocean. Of course, there's a fully equipped kitchen that looks onto the great room area, two spacious bedrooms with two queen-sized beds in each room (with a total of 4 beds) their own TVs, and ensuite bathrooms.
Need even more sleeping space? The living room has both a sleeper sofa and sleeper love seat in the living area.
You will have access to both the Bloody Point golf course and the prestigious Haig Point Golf Club.
Please note that a well-behaved canine member of the family will be considered, although there is a pet fee. Manager must review pet requests. See the end of this description for our complete pet policy.**
We imagine you will find yourself strolling from your cottage to the beach over and over. This beautiful beach is perfect for long walks, jogging, and even bike riding. Families especially enjoy the relatively calm waters where children can swim and play without fear of a strong undertow. It’s a great beach for building sand castles and hunting for shells and sand dollars after the tide goes out.
Folks also enjoy touring the island by golf cart, by bicycle, and by simply taking nice long walks.
The wildlife is abundant and breathtaking. Melrose is the home of a Great White Egret rookery, and at certain times of the year you will see hundreds of these graceful birds settle in for the night. Nests of American Bald Eagles can sometimes be found nearby, and now and then vigilant visitors can actually catch site of a Loggerhead Turtle coming ashore to lay hundreds of eggs in the soft sand.
You will want to spend time exploring the rest of this unique and special island. Accessible only by ferry, water taxi, and private boat (we will help with your arrangements), Daufuskie's isolation from the hustle and bustle of the mainland provides a one-of-its-kind experience for those looking to truly get away from it all. You won't find a friendlier place, and one of the best things about visiting this island is getting to know the local folks, and its diverse and interesting culture.
If you're looking for an old-fashioned beach vacation experience, this comfortable and pretty cottage will exceed your expectations. We expect it will be very popular with island visitors, so be sure to reserve your time at this lovely vacation home today!
** PET POLICY:
We will accept a well-behaved canine member of the family if approved by the property manager. However, the dog must be over one year old, not be aggressive towards people or other pets, be house trained, does not get up on the furniture, and is ok with being left alone when you are away from the cottage (no incessant barking or destructive behavior). We require that you will be a responsible pet owner when the dog is outside, that your dog is always kept on a leash, is up-to-date on flea and heart worm treatment and...most importantly...that there will be no signs that your pet was in the property when you depart. Why Deborah Smith chose Melrose on the Beach
From the Owner: When I go to Daufuskie Island, it is a vacation. All the stress leaves me as I walk on the secluded beach, watch the wildlife and enjoy what life is really all about...beauty and peace. You will see egrets, fox squirrels, deer and dolphin....all from the spacious front porch. From Daufuskie Rental Group: We enjoy managing this charming cottage with its perfect ocean-front location.
What makes this Cottage unique
From the Owner: The unique benefits are what we don't have. We don't have cars, congestion, noise, tourism or crowds. We do have beautiful beaches, friendly island people who wave as they go by in their golf cart, quiet, beauty of nature. If you want to go to the busy island, Hilton Head, it is just a short ferry ride away. If you have your own boat, I do own a dock on Daufuskie so you can bring it and tie it up there while you stay at the Cottage! From Daufuskie Rental Group: Aside from the charms of this cottage, we are happy that the owner allows well-behaved canine family members to join in the vacation fun.

Great location, very clean! It was very apparent that property owner genuinely wanted our stay to be wonderful as she was super thoughtful and went out of her way to ensure we were well taken care of!!!
Wonderful Historical Place
My husband and I traveled to Daufuskie Island for the first time. The ferry ride was wonderful and they know their stuff! Our cottage was beautiful with a view to match. Let me first compliment Deborah Smith for her assistance and excellent overview of the cottage, island, things to see, and generally anything we needed to know!! The cottage was clean and comfy. People on the island were really wonderful, from the transportation people to the golf cart people and anyone else who wanted to make sure we had a wonderful first trip to the island. The two restaurants were great-I must really call out Lucy Bell's for their mouthwatering food and kind manner. I must really suggest going to Daufuskie Blues, School Grounds, and the rum distillery. We still didn't get to see everything I wanted, but that is what second, third, fourth, etc. trips are for. Can't want to come back. Go to Daufuskie Island - it is great!!!
Amazing, enchanting island
WAY off the beaten path, a stay on Daufuskie Island was just what we needed. We read, we walked the deserted beach, we explored the island by golf cart, we cooked, we slept. Our dogs enjoyed it even more than we did!
This cottage is right on the ocean and has everything you’ll need for your stay. Deb, the property manager, is great - friendly, thoughtful, and extremely helpful. Her orientation to the island was fantastic. She made the whole experience wonderful for us.
Daufuskie requires planning. Getting there, having groceries... We found the effort completely worthwhile. There’s a small general store if you need something basic, plus an excellent wine store, and School Grounds Coffee and Lucy Bell’s restaurant (breakfast and lunch) made truly enjoyable outings.
Though there are day trippers, the island is quiet and largely feels empty. Resorts and houses have been abandoned, and there’s an eerie, left-behind feeling which we really enjoyed. We hope efforts to revive these island enterprises are successful, but meanwhile the ghostliness of the island has its specific charms. We’ll be back!
Perfect relaxing getaway
Our family of four came to Daufuskie for Thanksgiving and really enjoyed our time. We didn’t leave the house on Thursday with bad weather, but the house was perfect for lounging around and cooking our Thanksgiving meal. The rest of the weekend we got out and enjoyed the beach and the use of the golf cart and explored the island. Our dog got to join us and he loved it as well.
Loved the cottage. The atmosphere was relaxed. The room colors and beachy decor was perfect. The ocean is right there. You can't get any closer in my opinion. Had everything we needed for a week
Of course, we brought our own groceries. The general store did have basics such as sandwich stuff, milk, bread, etc. Deborah was fantastic and a pleasure to meet. We are looking at making Daufuski Island a regular trip each year.
We loved our stay!!
The cottage was ocean front, beautifully decorated and a very short walk to the beach. Deborah the property manager met us at the cottage and was very helpful and made sure we had everything we needed. Karen arranged our ferry transportation to from the Island as well as transportation to the cottage. Our golf cart was delivered not long after we arrived. We had everything we needed within minutes of our arrival! We loved exploring the Island and learning the history. The locals were friendly and helpful. The perfect place to go if you want to totally unwind! We will definitely be back!
Lots of great restaurants, art galleries, local artisan businesses, and historic sites to explore on Daufuskie! In addition, visitors may want to consider some of the available activities.
