About Richard McCray

Our parents bought the lot in the early fifties which began our family's visits to the island. From then until now various parts of the family have spent time there. Camping, staying in cottages, doing water sports, beachcombing, and relaxing. The house was built in the seventies. That enhanced the setting for all of us and, again, we continued to spent as much time as possible between our various responsibilities at our own widespread 'mainland' homes.

Throughout that time and to the present we have taken great pride in the house and have maintained it well. We have a local property manager who has helped maintain the house and work with guests. He has been doing that for more than 20 years.

Mom and dad are deceased now and Charles and I (Richard) are continuing the tradition and the standards set by our parents. We hope you consider the house in your vacation plans. We will be glad to answer any questions you may have about the house or the area.

Beautiful beach and great location!

  • 4 of 5

The house was really a home-- gorgeous wood everywhere, and lots of lovely little details. My one critique is the couches were not comfortable, for anyone with a back problem. Otherwise a fantastic experience!

Amazing! Perfect for families with children or the couples who just want to relax.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed June 11 - June 18. We had 4 adults and 4 children. The accommodations and location surpassed our expectations. The house layout is perfect and everything is in great shape. The showers outside to wash off the sand are wonderful. The beach is really a short walk and it is not crowded. The appliances all are in great shape and work. There is a fish cleaning station that I do not think was mentioned in the description.

If something needs to be fixed the owners are on top of it. They genuinely care about your stay and Richard even called the house phone to make sure we were happy with everything.

This was our 2nd trip to OBX our first staying in the Hotel Cape Hatteras. We will not be doing that again.

We are already planning our next summers trip and we will be renting this little slice of heaven each time we do.

Great set-up

  • 5 of 5

We used this home for a small family reunion. It was as advertised and better. Great location five houses away from the beach. Plenty of amenities for our group. Nice layout with bedrooms downstairs and kitchen/family room upstairs. Cape Hatteras sightseeing is fantastic. The beach was never too crowded and we were there in the middle of July.

The owner was great to work with. Will totally stay here again!

close to the beach

  • 4 of 5

Nice with plenty of room although we were outside most of the time. Sleeping accommodations are great for lots of kids but still worked for 5 adults. Nice L shaped deck for sitting in the breeze and glimpsing at the ocean through the tall bushes and houses. Really is a short walk to the beach. Not far from the Ocracoke ferry but get there very early in the morning to miss the lines/long wait. Conner's is a great grocery store and deli.

we'll be back!

  • 4 of 5

This was our first trip to OBX. The Docks was easy to find and is a short walk to the beach. The cottage is neat, clean and larger than it appears in the pictures. The laundry room was a big plus as was the separate entrance for upstairs (the actual living area) and downstairs (the bedrooms and laundry). The large deck upstairs gives a limited view of the ocean but if you angle yourself just you can see it between a few other houses. You're close enough to hear the waves crashing on the beach. A dining table on the deck would have been nice ( I went to the ACE hardware and bought one for $40). The carport was a nice feature and fit my extended cab F150 just fine. At night you could see the light from Hatteras light house, in the evening we watched fighter planes practicing over the ocean.

The kitchen was well equipped. The living room furniture left a lot to be desired (the cushions are plastic and slide off of the frame). The bedrooms were above average size and comfortable. The downstairs bathroom was also above average size and featured a shower with great water pressure.

The beach at the end of the street turned out to be very narrow but was great for watching surfers. We found that if we went 5 minutes south the beach at the Hatteras lighthouse was much wider and the water was much calmer and had a lot of sea shells to pick from.

We enjoyed our visit so much we went north to Avon after our time at the cottage ran out and found a place to stay another few days.

Overall a very good rental for the money.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your response and hope you enjoyed your visit. My brother and I were down there the last two weeks. We have fixed the sofas so the cushions do lot slide and are looking into getting a small table for the deck. We need to find something that can be left out with no fear it will blow away in high winds. we also added another small end table on the deck matching the existing one.
