About Deirdre Hochstetler

Being a fourth generation Floridian the mountains have always been a source of wonderment for me. I have many fond memories of summer vacations with my family camping in the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Appalachians. The cool crisp air, winding mountain roads, rushing crystal clear streams, and lush flora were a refreshing contrast to the Florida heat.

When my work brought me to Atlanta two decades ago I was delighted to discover the mountains a short two hours away. Unlike the Carolinas, the Georgia mountains are still relatively undiscovered by tourists. My retirement goal is to trade the hustle and bustle of Atlanta for the quiet unspoiled beauty of the north Georgia mountains. This mountain cabin represents a promise to myself that someday that dream will come true.

Deirdre Hochstetler purchased this lodge in 2012

Why Deirdre Hochstetler chose Northeast Mountains

The Chattahoochee National Forest is where the Appalachian mountain range begins and is the one true mountainous area in North Georgia. Its edges are dotted by quaint mountain towns like Blue Ridge, Blairsville, Dahlonega, and Helen, but the only civilization inside the forest is the community of Suches. With ten wilderness areas and six wildlife management areas most of the forest is unspoiled and is as wild as when the Cherokee Indians roamed. For a nature lover the natural beauty and abundant wildlife that encompass Suches are about as close to heaven as you can get on this earth.

What makes this lodge unique

The Riverlands Lodge sits 50 feet from the Toccoa River which is one of the premier trout streams of Georgia. This stretch of the Toccoa is privately owned and heavily stocked offering excellent fly fishing opportunities. The cabin is nestled in a small river valley surrounded by mountains offering a 360 degree panoramic view. Herds of deer regularly graze in the open fields while wild ducks, herons, and beavers can been found along the river bank.

Growing up I wanted to be a Forest Ranger so I have added all the amenities to the property that make it feel like you have your own private park. There is a picnic pavilion on the riverfront with an in-ground charcoal grill, and a rustic fire ring surrounded by benches to roast your hotdogs and marshmallows. Horse shoes can be played while the picnic is being prepared.

While I enjoy the outdoors I also like to be comfortable so the cabin is setup with all the amenities needed to enjoy your time inside as well. The cabin was built to be a family home so it has a spaciousness needed to accommodate a variety of people. The four bedrooms are separated to afford privacy to each bedroom making it ideal for family reunions.

I thoroughly enjoy the simple beauty of Suches, and this cabin puts you in the middle of the very best of it. I am proud to offer my guests the chance to share this experience and hope they find Suches as heavenly as I do.

Fantastic

  • 5 of 5

This place is a must for anyone looking for a peaceful river experience! The cabin is well maintained and tastefully decorated. It is exceptionally clean and a true home away from home. It's not full of goofy bear stuff that's get in your way like so many other cabins. The owners are thoughtful and keep a fully stocked pantry. This was useful because there is no grocery store anywhere nearby so if you forget something they probably have it covered. Also, it is perfectly situated on a trout fisherman's dream! A beautiful piece of the Toccoa runs right behind the cabin. Within minutes of casting we pulled in a half dozen trout and it was constant throughout our stay. Even the kids caught trout! Overall great experience and I would definitely do it again.

A Truly Gorgeous Mountain Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Our recent stay at this beautiful cabin exceeded our highest expectations. With so much to do on the property, and a short drive to nearby towns, our weekend came to an end much too quickly. The owner, Deirdre was as nice as can be, always responded to our questions and concerns quickly. I would highly recommend this property to others!

Amazing piece of property!

  • 5 of 5

We just rented Riverlands and the pictures do not do this place justice. The cabin itself is gorgeous and the river is literally steps away. The large flat property was ideal for the kids and pets. The house was so well stocked with just about everything you can imagine and the decor is impeccable. Cannot say enough good things, we will definitely be back! Absolutely loved it. Highly recommend!

Great Cabin!

  • 5 of 5

My family (6 adults and 2 children) have vacationed in and around Blue Ridge for the past 3 yrs. We kept looking for the perfect cabin to accommodate all our likes. This is the first time that really satisfied all of us. We had a great time, relaxing, fishing, hiking and enjoying the surroundings. I can highly recommend.

Perfect family retreat!

  • 5 of 5

All I can say is WOW! This home was better than ever imagined! The location is perfect. The home is beautifully decorated. Beds are very comfortable. Kitchen very well stocked. Washer and dryer was fancy! Closet full of games and activities. Very clean and well maintained! Fishing right from bank in backyard. Pavilion, fire pit and well groomed property made this rental perfect! Family of 12 slept comfortably. Quilts on beds, abundance of quality towels and TV's everywhere. There is nothing this home does not have! There is Wi-Fi but with AT&T, we couldn't call or text which was great for the 5 kids! It forced them to enjoy horseshoes, corn hole, fishing, kickball, tubing down river (tubes are included!) and evenings by the fire pit. Deirdre, the homeowner, is SO very easy to work with. Very prompt with emails and offered so many suggestions for the area. We went to Ocoee White Water rafting one day, which was great! Went to Sea Creek Falls, just down the road. Easy, short hike and worth the trip. Even took our 2 dogs and 81 year old MIL. Some drove an hour to Murphy to visit casino while others tubed down the Toccoa to end up at the back door. This area is truly a hidden gem. I have lived in GA for 52 years and never heard of Suches. I am looking at calendar now to see when to book this property again. Our party of 12 could not have been happier with this home and all the amenities! Perfect July 4th holiday vacation :-)
