Overview

About the property

1-bedroom apt., less than 2 blocks from shops & restaurants, stocked kitchen.

Central location, walk to events and restaurants in this historic Gold Rush town. Enjoy your own quiet, cozy 550 sq. ft. apartment with full kitchen in the lower level of a private home. Children welcome. Plenty of parking.

Comfortable 1 bedroom/1 bath apartment, for 1 to 2 adults (children welcome) with a queen bed and futon couch (Pack n Play available). The flat is in the basement of a home (quiet, single occupant). The ceilings are low (81'; one crossbeam descends 5-1/2') and, while there are plenty of windows, the apartment gets natural light mainly in the mornings. The apartment has its own entrance and an outdoor table and chairs.

Guests are asked to book a minimum of 2 nights and to only bring the number of guests agreed upon. Monthly rentals are welcome. A pet is possible, if quiet and well behaved and pre-approved by me (pet deposit required). When applying please tell me something about yourself and your general purpose in coming to the area, especially if you have no personal profile posted.

This is a fabulous location in the heart of an old Victorian gold-mining town that makes a car unnecessary for most your needs.

Your host is a professional writer, teacher and world traveler, and is likely to be available to assist you for much of the year while writing her next book. Otherwise, the apartment is overseen by a very capable couple. We’re glad to recommend sightseeing, walks and local eateries that will make your stay extra special. Someone will check with you after arrival to make sure everything is okay; otherwise your privacy is respected.

• Full, eat-in kitchen with everything needed for making your own meals (purchase your own groceries).

•Bedroom with pillow-top queen bed, en-suite bathroom.

• Bathroom has a large shower.

• Living room has a queen futon couch/bed.

• Wireless Internet, TV with DirectTV (cable) DVD and Netflix/Roku.

- Natural gas, vented potbellied stove heater.

- All linens provided, river and swimming towels available.

- Coffeepot, microwave, oven, fridge.

• Warm in winter. Cool in summer.

• Pack n Play available.

• A small pet is possible.

• Parking is off-street for one or more cars.

About Mary Greer

I'm a world traveler who's lived in five different countries and six states in the U.S. I make my living writing books and by traveling to teach.

Mary Greer purchased this apartment in 1998

Why Mary Greer chose Nevada City

I moved to Nevada City from San Francisco because I was looking for a slower pace, beautiful environment, and lots of art, culture and interesting events. I'm happy to share my downtown home with visitors to this lovely country town.

What makes this apartment unique

I enjoy being in the midst of things, walking distance to everything, on a usually quiet street (except during festivals and parades). Every time I return from a trip, I delight in driving into my picturesque Victorian town, lit at night by gas-lights and people ambling through the streets, no matter the time. There are plenty of trees around the house, giving the sensation of being in a private oasis (while actually being quite central). Most days the nearly cloudless sky is a sparkling blue and the air is fresh. Even in winter there are summery days while the summer nights are cool. We have our own public radio station, combining the best in music and talk, plus there are plenty of activities from wine-tasting to courses, guided hikes, winter/snow activities, plays and everything in the arts.

The property is cozy and situated right in town on a very quiet street and has everything you need.

The kitchen is well stocked, the layout allows someone to sleep while someone cooks or reads in the other room. The tv and access to Netflix was high quality. It was very quiet and Mary is friendly and thoughtful and wonderful to work with. We will return!!

Walking distance to ice cream

  • 4 of 5

Nice to be in town, and walking distance to great restaurants and to a great ice cream store! Lovely to sit out front of the apt. for meals. Since it is a downstairs apt., it stays fairly cool which is nice for those hot days. The TV is the center of the main room, which wasn't what I was interested in, and didn't make a cozy place to gather, but it didn't bother us much as that ended up being the second bedroom anyway. And if you are into watching, the TV is a big one!

We enjoyed our stay very much. The property is close to town ( walking distance) and the town is very historic. The property is well maintained and our hostess was very gracious and helpful. We would certainly consider booking this property again.

Owner's Response: You were a great guest. Come back any time. Tip for others: keeping the apartment closed up during really hot days and open at night does wonders, especially on those days when the power company asks us to please not use electricity.

This is the heart of California's Gold Country. The Sierra Foothills has a mild four-season semi-arid climate with occasional snow, rain only during the winter rainy season, and mild summers (compared to the blistering central-valley). You'll find festivals, theatre, music, markets, plus lots of hiking and outdoor activites - many within walking distance and others, only a short drive. Sking is only an hour away and swimming in mountain rivers is even closer. This is also a popular area for weddings and other family gatherings.
